Lesson title: The Chinese phonetic system/tones
Step 1 Desired Result
KNOW
Students should learn to know the concept of tones as to the Chinese phonetic system, the
numbers from 1 to 10 and 3 useful daily expressions.
UNDERSTAND
Students will understand the concept of tones, and the importance of the tones in the Chinese
phonetic system/Pinyin.
BE ABLE TO
Students will be able to have the awareness of using the tones while speaking Chinese, and they
will have the basic ability to apply the Chinese tones.

Students can show their awareness while speaking Chinese as to the tones.
Students can apply the tones skills in the numbers and daily expression sentences.

Leading in
SECTION 1
PART ONE Review

The teacher will explain the focus of this class will be on the tones, and evoke the students to
use the tones skills in the numbers and daily expression sentences that we’re learning today.

A short review to the classroom management sentences.

The teacher teaches the 3 daily expression sentences.

Review the concept of the Chinese phonetic system/Pinyin with the class
PART TWO learn the tone concept

The teacher explains the different tones in the Chinese phonetic system/Pinyin, and the features
as to every tone, modify and have the students to repeat and practice.

Handle out the tones sheet to the students, and teach them to know the picture to every tone,
and how to make a deeper impression as to hand to help remember the different tones.

Take the number sheet, use the concept of tones that we’ve just learnt to practice 1 to 5.

And then have the students try to use the tones skills to pronounce 6 to 10 all by themselves,
first. When they’ done with it, learn the number 6 to 10 together in the class.

A little and short game, let’s say the numbers 1 to 10 in Chinese one student by one student.

Now, the teacher is going to give the students a chance to do a further practice with the tones,
try to speak number 0, 11, 12, 13 … 19 in Chinese, the students can use all the Chinese skills in
this practice.
SECTION 2 Expose the students to the Chinese hand-writings. (If have time)
PART ONE

The teacher shows the Chinese note-taking paper, and explains to the students how to use the
paper sheet correctly, like where to put the Pinyin, where to put the Chinese characters, and
what is the right order to write down a Chinese sentence.

Tell the students the following task is to try to copy the two Chinese sentences that we’ve learnt
to their paper as notes.

The teacher will encourage the students try to write down two sentences to introduce
themselves by just using the sentence pattern that they’ve copy from the notes. And the
teacher will tell them the next Chinese class we are learning asking name and answering,
which will be built on the sentences they are taking notes.
PART TWO


Take the notes and try to write down two sentences to introduce themselves.
The students do the practice, and the teach goes to them to help.
SUMMING UP
1 The teacher sums up the concept of tones as to the Chinese phonetic system/Pinyin.
2 The teacher has the students review together the numbers from 1 to 10.
3. The teacher has the students retell the 3 daily expressions we’ve learnt in this class.
Homework


Use the tone concept and apply the tone skills to pronounce the Chinese characters on the tone
sheet after class, and speak them in next class one by one.
Try to write down two sentences to introduce themselves on the Chinese paper sheet and try to
use them in the next class’ conversation.
