Writtle Postgraduate Attributes
To be developed through all courses
Postgraduates would be expected to achieve the Undergraduate Attributes but to a Level 7 academic
standard and to a postgraduate employment related level of professionalism.
Academic skills including:
Literature searching; a systematic understanding of specialist knowledge and wider subject
context; a conceptual understanding to enable the critical evaluation of current research and
advanced scholarship in their discipline field of study or area of professional practice. A
familiarity with interdisciplinarity. Postgraduate-level literacy (grammar, spelling, text
organisation, referencing) and numeracy; data handling; presentation; written, visual, and verbal
communication; awareness of plagiarism; intellectual curiosity and creative problem solving. A
comprehensive understanding of techniques applicable to individual research or advanced
scholarship including the evaluation of methodologies, research planning and, where appropriate,
the development of new hypotheses.
IT skills including:
Moodle; word processing; spread sheets; Turnitin; file management; internet use, engagement
and protocols (plus any sector specific ICT, e.g., CAD for designers).
Personal development skills including:
Time management; equality and diversity awareness; team working; leadership, self -reflection;
career planning including reflection on one’s professional standing; goal setting and mature
decision making. Confidence and interpersonal skills including: critical feedback to peers;
academic networking beyond the College; and shaping one’s communication in response to the
intended audience.
Sector related employability skills including:
Awareness of their sector; a global perspective; environmental sustainability; negotiation;
integrity; responsibility; understanding how businesses work; health and safety; basic legal
knowledge; sector specific skills; employer expectation awareness. Initiative; personal
responsibility; self-direction, decision making in complex and unpredictable situations; resilience.
Project planning (Gantt charts); making sound judgements in the absence of complete data.
Learning how to learn including:
Developing good study habits; focused attention; self and peer evaluation; cultural awareness
and sensitivity; openness and curiosity; a propensity for life-long learning and continuing
professional development.
