One of the classic street rallies started 101 years ago and produced big names which still leave their mark on the automobile industry to this day. Ettore Bugatti, Vicenzo Lancia and Giovanni Agnelli, just to name a few. If the e-miglia can bring about even half of that, it has achieved twice as much. The e-miglia is the first international e-rally, “quiet“ and with zero-emission through gorgeous landscapes and nature. Only for electro mobiles with 2, 3 or 4 wheels. For the third time, the rally is setting off from Munich on August 12th. The finish-line will be crossed on August 16th in the famous Swiss resort St. Moritz. In between lay 800 km, and daily stages of up to 200 km along beautiful routes. There’ll also be sportive challenges in form of time trials on blocked-off terrain. The REBEL Group originates the emiglia in 2010 with clear-cut goals in mind: To show the world how competitive and effective, as well as dynamic and alive electric mobility is. Head of the company Christian M. Herles: “The e-miglia is an initiative of the REBEL Group. Longstanding years of experience in motorsport provide the basis here to realize new ideas professionally. We want to demonstrate emotionally, as well as in action what e-mobility can already do and at which stage this new technology is, in order to build the trust of the car drivers.“ In 2010, the premiere of the e-miglia, the skills of e-mobility already became evident. This innovative future technology is becoming more and more important, if individual mobility is to be maintained. Herles: “One certainly needs good partners, in particular in order to realize visionary projects such as the e-miglia. The AvD and the TÜV SÜD AG are with the e-miglia for the third year and have even strengthened their commitment. That makes us happy and affirms us. In addition we were able to integrate even more highlights into the route with the Grossglockner and St. Moritz for the second time. A lot of vision and courage are needed on the part of the partners in order to support this adventure of the next generation not only financially." 3 e-miglia Media Information As of: August, 2012 Munich – St. Moritz / August 12st - 16th, 2012 International e-rally / www.e-miglia.com e-miglia 2012: Already almost a classic. Third year of the international rally for electric vehicles Dates: August 12th - 16th, 2012 Route: From Munich to St. Moritz - approximately 800 km zero-emission rally Participation registration: From March 1st , 2012 on For the third year already, the e-miglia is starting on a tour through four Alpine countries with purely electrically powered vehicles. What started as a big adventure for the participants, partners and organizers in 2010, has established itself today and is a constant in the still young world of new mobility. With the e-miglia, e-mobility could and can demonstrate that the different vehicle types master big challenges without difficulty. The proof of the suitability for everyday use of those vehicles available on the market, is beyond question, since the average 43 km which a German covers per day, is mastered by the electric vehicles with ease no matter how steep the incline. Traditionally the registration for the e-miglia 2012 opens on March 1st on www.e-miglia.com. There are a total of 30 starting positions available. Until June 15th everyone with a valid driver's license and a purely electrical vehicle can register for the constancy rally. In four daily stages the route leads from Munich through Austria to Italy and ends in the Swiss holiday domicile St. Moritz. The entire route of the e-miglia marks one big accomplishment assessment for the participants. Up to 280 km a day are covered, including the highest passes of the Alpine region. The score is settled at the destination, because it remains exciting until the last moment. Decisive for the victory are the special stages and the evaluation of the electric power consumption which became part of the Regulations in 2011. The variety of different vehicle types at the e-miglia already becomes evident when looking at the three best placed cars from last year. Through meticulous preparation and precise training, Tim Ruhoff in the sportscar Tesla Roadster, was able to win the overall standing in 2011, after he had already secured the title in 2010. Christian Wenger-Rosenau in a Jetcar, especially designed and built for this event placed second. The city car Think City, which was driven by the rally experienced Walter 'Fuzzy' Kofler, secured the third place on the podium. In that way, the top placements from 2011 create a mixed image of the vehicles, as well as of the participants and that again proves that everyone has a fair chance at the e-miglia. Both events, the exposition Friedrichshafen from May 17 th– 20th,2012, as well as the international e-rally from August 12th-16th,2012, will show how an electrically operated sports car gains momentum and how an e-bike speeds up. The exhibition “the-electric-avenue” in Friedrichshafen is one year older than the international rally e-miglia. Both initiatives are part of the Rebel Media Group. CEO Christian Herles: “We're convinced that the future belongs to alternative actuation. A lot of our energy is focused on this subject matter, which we highlight while taking many aspects and consumer needs into consideration. With the e-miglia we want to present e-mobility as sporty and emotional on an international level by showing a big media-based commitment. The trade fair supplements the offer for the end consumer with comprehensive information, lectures and test drives.” What's new on the market of electric mobility? What do the current surveys of the manufacturers look like? What professions are arising from e-mobility and what does it even feel like to drive an electric car? The exposition “the-electric-avenue” will provide answers to a wide range of questions from May 17th-20th,2012. “Experts and end consumers likewise are addressed and can have a twofold experience: on the one hand, they can have an active experience by engaging in a test drive on either of the two driving courses, on the other hand, the visitors receive lots of information from the exhibitors, as well as from the presenters of the new eTalks”, trade show director Klaus Wellmann describes the concept. All in all, around 30 exhibitors, such as Mitsubishi, Nissan, Tesla, Opel and Smart will be presenting their current models. The trade show “the-electric-avenue” is already taking place for the fourth year and at the same time as the oldtimer exhibition “Klassikwelt Bodensee”. The combination of classic and modern is unique. The podium discussions with subsequent short presentations are a new element: “There's a lot of interest in electric mobility, so we are placing even more emphasis on information this year“, so project manager Roland Bosch. While the expo heavily relies on information, the e-miglia proves that e-mobiles are extremely efficient and suitable for daily use through difficult practical tests. In August, the ambitious teams will participate in a sporty competition by embarking on a journey from Munich, across the Alps to St. Moritz. 800 electrifying kilometers in four exciting days. So, whoever is inspired after visiting “the-electric-avenue” Expo, where the e-miglia will also be presented, can still register their electric mobile by June 15th, 2012 and participate in the e-miglia. e-miglia 2012 Dates: August 12th – 16th, 2012 Route: From Munich to St. Moritz - around 800 km carbon neutral rally Registration: Open to anyone until June 15th, 2012 www.e-miglia.com 5 e-miglia Media Information As of: August, 2012 Munich – St. Moritz / August 12st - 16th, 2012 International e-rally / www.e-miglia.com International rally for e-mobility: e-miglia 2012 – the path is the goal August August August August 12th: 13th: 14th: 16th: Start in Munich at the Deutsches Museum Verkehrszentrum Queen stage across the Grossglockner high alpine road Bolzano Finale in the energy city der St. Moritz The mobility of the future. Exclamation mark and question mark. The experts agree that the mobility behavior will change a lot. Even though no one wants to be nailed down as to how and with what one will be getting from point A to point B in 2050, it is beyond question that electric mobility will play a crucial role. In 2012, the e-miglia will be showing what electro mobiles are capable of for the third year in a row. In four daily stages the e-miglia participants will master 800 km electrically. And between A and B there's a lot of challenges, clearly a lot more than the mobile day-to-day demands. The starting signal will sound at exactly 5:30 pm on August 12 th at the German Museum Traffic Center (Deutsches Museum Verkehrszentrum) near the Bavaria Park and not far away from the Oktoberfest Wiesn. The prologue leads to Rosenheim. The next morning, the rounder’s set out towards Austria. The first stop around noon on August 13 th is Salzburg. Here, the energy from the photovoltaic facility of the Salzburg Congress Center will be used to fill up. In the evening, the day's destination, kilometer 0 of the Grossglockner high alpine road in Bruck in the holiday region of the National Park Hohe Tauern will be reached. High, higher and awesome the participants continue on August 14 th to the Grossglockner for the Queen's stage of the e-miglia 2012. The drive to the Edelweiss summit is a synonym for overcoming Europe's highest alpine road and the highest point of the e-miglia. Reducing the fees for electric vehicles is only one way the Grossglockner high alpine road shows support for the preservation of nature and the efforts towards sustainability. Only after mastering 280 km the day's destination Bolzano is reached. The night is spent at the Bolzano fair, which has been dedicated to the topic of sustainability in a particular way by hosting the yearly occurring expositions Klimahouse, Klimaenergy and, since 2011, also the Klimamobility. The e-migliaisti get to St. Moritz, the final destination of the electric rally, through Schlanders and the National Park Stilfserjoch. The Engadin lives of its impressive nature. To conserve it is the first priority for the community. St. Moritz is Switzerland's 101st energy city, where the sun shows its friendly face particularly often. The participants of the e-miglia will actually profit from that by filling up with the solar energy of St. Moritz at the final destination. The zeroemission vehicles will make their way into the village center on the afternoon of August 16 th where the townsfolk, tourists and spectators can celebrate the winners and marvel at the vehicles of the present future. e-miglia Media Information As of: August, 2012 Munich – St. Moritz / August 12st - 16th, 2012 International e-rally / www.e-miglia.com e-miglia 2012: New appealing and electrifying starting field The starting signal will sound on August 12th at 5:30 pm in Munich The protagonists: BMW Mini E, Elma 02, Fisker Karma, Lampo3, Mercedes E-Cell, Nissan Leaf, Peugeot iON, Tesla Roadster, Twike Active, Zerotracer, Zero Motorcycle New rally category: EV extended range Constancy rally through four alpine countries in 800 km: D-AUT-I-CH When the starting signal sounds at the traffic center of the Deutsches Museum in Munich on August 12th, a colorfully mixed group of participants will set off on the 800 km long electric rally. Tim Ruhoff from Munich will be taking part with his Tesla Roadster for the third time. Who will constitute competition this year for the two-time winner of the e-miglia is still uncertain, since there are lots of new faces and models. With a top speed of 220 km/h and an acceleration of 0-100 km/h in 4.5 seconds, the 420 kilowatt respectively 550 PS Swiss Lampo3 is likely to be a real Tesla chaser. The Swiss Alessandro De Guglielmo from Rivo will be behind the wheel. Power and torque aren't the decisive criteria for the constancy rally though, the energy consumption is also incorporated in the evaluation. Dr. Andras Bednar from Hungary will be driving an Elma 02. For the premiere in 2010, he had only participated with his reconstructed plug-in car which has served him loyally for years as an escort vehicle and the journey to the starting line in Munich was already an adventure. A special category will be presented for the first time at the e-miglia 2012. Four Fisker Karma will be competing against one another for the victory in the new category „EV extended range“. The emiglia organizers are viewing this as a demonstration competition, in order to assess how the group of participants will be composed and, in particular, how they can be compared. One of the partners of the e-miglia, the Technical Control Board South (TÜV SÜD), will also be entering a Fisker. Four Twikers will be competing in the three-wheel category. The visually unusual vehicle has gained lots of followers in the past years and has achieved cult status. 200 km range and pedal actuation are convincing. For the Twike pilot Francois Loeb (former Swiss National Councilor) e-mobility is a prospect: “I've been an avid TWIKE rider since 1998 and I'm still on my first Twike! In my point of view, the light-weight build has to be the prerequisite for exhausting the energy saving potential. “ The reward Naturally the joy in equal-zero-emission driving and the beautiful mountain environment surrounding the chosen route are the biggest rewards at the e-miglia. There's still a prize money totaling € 10.000 for the participants however. Experience e-mobility up close Before the teams set out on the approximately 800 kilometer long stretch from Munich over the Grossglockner to Bolzano and through the Engadin to St. Moritz on Sunday evening, the e-miglia is inviting everyone to the public paddock in the traffic center of the Deutsches Museum at the Bavariapark in Munich on August 12th, 2012. Everyone can experience e-mobility live there from noon on. You'll have the opportunity to get to know more about the topic of e-mobility from drivers, co-drivers and experts. Ranges, charging possibilities, electricity sources, recuperation techniques, insurance coverage and roadway repair service are the FAQ of e-mobility. e-miglia Media Information As of: August, 2012 Munich – St. Moritz / August 12st - 16th, 2012 International e-rally / www.e-miglia.com e-miglia 2012: Kick-off event and start on August 12th in Munich Public kick-off event at the traffic center of the Deutsche Museum The protagonists: BMW Mini E, Elma 02, Lampo3, Mercedes E-Cell, Nissan Leaf, Peugeot iON, Tesla Roadster, Twike Active, Zerotracer, Zero Motorcycle Constancy rally for e-mobiles through four Alpine counties for 800 km: D-AUT-I-CH Come – look - marvel – inform yourself. Everyone is invited to inform themselves about the mobility technology of the future free of cost. Back to the future? If you'd also like to take a look into the past, you might enjoy visiting the traffic center (Verkehrszentrum) during the general opening hours. Aside from the technological aspects, the economic, political, social and cultural dimensions of traffic will also be addresses and reflected. The history of traffic, which didn't always develop the way anticipated, is arranged in three halls. There are various reactions to the Federal Chancellor, Mrs. Merkel's goal to have 1 million electric cars on German streets in 2020. At this point we'd like to quote Gottlieb Daimler in 1901: 'The worldwide demand for automobiles won't exceed one million – the shortage of available chauffeurs being only one reason.' Back to the museum, where the original first electric mobiles, such as the Electric Baker, 1908, USA, the Slaby-Behringer electric mobile, 1920, Germany (see photo), and the Poehlmann EL 1986, Germany are all displayed. You can marvel at the electric mobile by Gottfried Hagen from 1906. The special exhibit 'Charged! - Electric mobility between desire and reality' will open mid December 2012. August 2012: Mid-August, the automobile world will once again be electrified: For the third year in a row, the Automobile Club of Germany (AvD) will be a strong partner of the e-miglia, the first international rally worldwide for purely electrically powered vehicles. Matthias Braun, Secretary General of the AvD: “Even though electric cars are still a rather rare sight in traffic, they represent a lot of the future drivetrain and vehicle concepts. Reliability, range and infra- structure – the emiglia is the ideal platform to discover the status quo. And the experiences we gather through the collaboration with the e-miglia, we implement for our members, who are as innovation-savvy as they are tradition-conscious.” In four daily stages the route leads from Munich, through Austria to Italy and finishes in St. Moritz in Switzerland. The entire route of the e-miglia poses a big challenge for the participants. Every day, no matter what the weather's like, 280 km, including the highest passes of the Alpine region, have to be covered. The basic concept of rally is revived Since its formation in 1899, the AvD has been accompanying 113 of the 125 years of automobile history – only very few automobile clubs worldwide can say that about themselves. For the AvD, the e-miglia combines lifestyle and innovative, eco-friendly technology with automobile tradition. The name of the event is a homage to a piece of motorsport history: the street rally which was carried out in Italy from 1927 until 1957, the "Mille Miglia" (“thousand miles“), which numerous AvD motorists such as Fritz Huschke von Hanstein successfully completed. Now the electric rally e-miglia carries the cult competition over into modern age and represents the original idea of a rally: less top speed, but instead tenacity and sportsmanship. Filling up with electricity in high heights Vehicles and participants must overcome differences in altitude of up to 2000 meter, narrow hairpin bends and lots of unavoidable acceleration phases will demand everything from the batteries and the performance electronics. By the way, silent running in order to save energy is explicitly forbidden. In the National Park Hohe Tauern the tallest e-charge column in the world is waiting for the participants, who have to cover the 800 kilometer long stretch from Bavaria to the Engadin. Aside from the time, the efficiency of the vehicles, as well as the power consumption under the various strains, is an important evaluation criterion. Please feel free to contact the AvD press office at tel. +49 (0)69-6606-368 with any questions you might have AUTOMOBILCLUB VON DEUTSCHLAND e.V. - Kommunikation Lyoner Str. 16 60528 Frankfurt am Main 18 e-miglia Media Information As of: August, 2012 Munich – St. Moritz / August 12st - 16th, 2012 International e-rally / www.e-miglia.com Presse-Mitteilung TÜV SÜD technical partner of the most difficult rally for e-vehicles August 2012 e-miglia 2012: The endurance test for e-cars approaches the third round Munich. 800 kilometers, 4 stages, 2500 altitude difference on the mountain pass to the Grossglockner – those are the parameters of the e-miglia 2012, the worldwide most difficult rally for electric vehicles from Munich to St. Moritz. The starting signal will sound on Sunday, August 12th, at 5:30 pm at the Traffic Center of the Deutsche Museum in Munich. Beforehand, the e-bolides are inspected for technical safety at the Technical Control Board South (TÜV SÜD), and from noon on they are presented at the Traffic Center. TÜV SÜD isn't just a technical partner, instead they're sending two teams into the rally themselves. Tesla Roadster, Nissan Leaf, Peugeot iOn, Mercedes AKlasse E-Cell – from the HP-strong Roadster, through twoand three-wheelers to the series-production vehicle, which everyone can buy. The list of participants makes it clear: by now electric mobility has a high degree of technical maturity and it is suitable for daily use. Attributes, for which the e-miglia has stood from the beginning on. The route challenges the limitations of technology. Best example: the individual stage over more than 260 kilometers from Bruck across the Grossglockner high alpine road to Bolzano. Here the drivers have to employ a special recuperation technique, through which the batteries are recharged with “braking energy”, and the skillful choice of the route that exceeds usual range of 150 kilometers by more than 30%. Horst Schneider, member of the Executive Board of the TÜV SÜD AG: “The e-miglia isn't just a performance show, through the high demands we receive concrete insight for the development of e-mobility. Technology and vehicles have developed enormously throughout the past year – we're excited.” Rally delivers practical data During the e-miglia, the TÜV SÜD experts will be collecting important data and insights on the topic of the cruising radius for the development of new services. Example: the in-house standard range TSECC (TÜV SÜD E-Car Cycle), by which 19 e-miglia Media Information As of: August, 2012 Munich – St. Moritz / August 12st - 16th, 2012 International e-rally / www.e-miglia.com the radius of e-vehicles is measured for the first time by considering actual driving cycles and weather conditions. The results of the TSECC show, that the driving cycle is lowered by up to 50 percent – during sub-zero temperatures and connection of additional consumers. With that, the TSECC supplies clear facts towards the success criteria of e-mobility, such as efficiency and range. “The e-miglia gives us very important insight for the detail development of the very practical test cycle.” Horst Schneider points out. The TSECC is also an important component for the cooperation for the development of consumption software for the fleet management with the two-time winner of the e-miglia Tim Ruhoff, CEO of Next Generation Mobility. For that, all of the electric cars that are available on the market will be tested by the TÜV SÜD e-mobility experts in everyday life. Some of the points being tested are the consumption evaluation as a function of the outside and the battery temperature, the charging condition when the tire pressure varies and the load condition changes. Once again two-wheelers, three-wheelers and cars will set off on August 12th and make their way through Germany, Austria, Italy and Switzerland in order to prove how electric vehicles are able to perform. The organizers are relying on highly developed charging technology, the P-CHARGE-Stand-Alone from Schletter, so that the vehicles are deployable as quickly as possible again. The Mode3 charges up to four vehicles at the same time with high power and therefore in very short time. Just the right thing for a rally! The organizers were able to convince themselves of that during the past few years already, so it’s no surprise that P-CHARGE will be used again this year. As rally suitable as it is, the series was designed for everyday use. For example directly at Schletter. Four of the P-CHARGE-charge columns are located in the parking lot of the headquarters in Kirchdorf in Upper Bavaria and supply 16 vehicles with electricity at the same time. This one way in which Schletter supports its employees and guests in the transition towards an eco-friendly form of mobility. Besides the P-CHARGEseries which comes with the wall box DUO ideal for wall-fastening, as well as two separately operational type 2 power outlets, and the fully linkable control module EWS-Box, the company offers matching, unusually cycle-proof rechargeable Lithium batteries through its subsidiary company. Schletter isn't only involved in the development of electric mobility. Core business of the company is the production of montage systems for photovoltaic facilities. The combination of both technologies is ground braking, if the goal is to actually avoid CO2 emissions and not just deflect them. In the end even the power which comes from the highly developed charge station isn't just electricity from a socket. In that way, the Park@Sol-Carports on the company's parking lot don't just protect the cars from weather damages, they also supply eco-friendly power. The mounted solar modules achieve a peak output of ½ megawatt and as part of the extensive roof system, it's up to 4 megawatt. The entire system covers a substantial part of the company’s current demand. A sophisticated energy management contributes to this. Thus, Schletter enters all of the internal energy flows and utilizes the data in order to save energy in the right places. A well-thought-out building automation keeps the emissions caused by the heating at a minimum. A woodchip heater, which is preferably operated with one-way pallets supplies CO2-neutral warmth. Schletter's environmental management complies with DIN EN ISO 14001:2004. For its consistent union of economy and ecology, the company received the ECOPROFIT Award of the counties Muehldorf and Rosenheim in 2011. At Schletter, economic success and responsibility for an intact environment go hand in hand. Innovative systems for a clean future is the slogan on the P-CHARGE vehicles, which accompany the e-miglia. The development of such systems is one of Schletter's basic company principles. www.schletter.de 21 e-miglia Media Information As of: August, 2012 Munich – St. Moritz / August 12st - 16th, 2012 International e-rally / www.e-miglia.com Engadin St. Moritz under the sign of electric mobility Energy city St. Moritz greets the e-miglia St. Moritz, 18.07.2012 - The region Engadin St. Moritz will be under the sign of e-mobility on August 15th and 16th. That's when the participants of the e-miglia will be arriving in St. Moritz. The first international rally, in which only purely electrically powered vehicles can participate in, isn't the only commitment with regards to sustainability the region Engadin St. Moritz is involved in though. In August 2012, the e-miglia will be stopping in St. Moritz for the second time. It's the first „quiet“ and clean international street rally - open to everyone, but solely for electric vehicles. The participants have to master four daily stages through Germany, Austria, Italy and Switzerland. The start is in Munich, the destination is St. Moritz. Two stages in the Engadin The electric mobiles will be driving into St. Moritz on August 15th. On august 16th, the final stage through the Upper Engadin with the destination St. Moritz will take place. On location all of the participating vehicles will be supplied exclusively with solar green energy, which will be provided by St. Moritz Energy. This solar energy is marketed as St. Moritz solar-green energy under the name of „SME SOL“. Currently the energy is produced by the following six local facilities: Piz Nair, along the path of the Corviglia rail, station Laret, trade house Malloth, Hotel Europa and Kinderkrippe. These facilities produce about 200'000 kWh per year. With this amount of energy, an electric car with an average consumption can cover approximately 20'000 km. Visitors can inform themselves locally about sustainability, St. Moritz Energy, the energy city St. Moritz and the energetic efforts of the Engadin. The cars will be displayed on the Via Serlas once they have crossed the finish line. Energy city St. Moritz The fact that sustainability isn't just a topic in connection with the e-miglia, shows in the numerous other projects and efforts in the region. On March 25th, 2004, St Moritz was officially named the 101st and, at the same time, the highest located energy city. Thanks to the municipal authority's commitment to more ecology, the title will be awarded to St. Moritz for additional four years in 2012. The delivery of the title will take place on August 16th on occasion of the e-miglia. St. Moritz has set itself the goal of sustainable, ecological development in the areas of urban management, regional planning, communal buildings and facilities, utilities and waste disposal, mobility, as well as the areas of internal organization, communication and cooperation. Besides that, there are many effective projects being realized in St. Moritz and the Engadin: hence visitors of the Clean Energy Tour can inform themselves about renewable energies in the mountains, the Alp's first plus-energy hotel is located on the Muottas Muragl, the Badrutt’s Palace Hotel utilizes the warmth of the St. Moritz Lake in order to heat, and organic farmers in Silvaplana are producing biogas from kitchen slops. Approx. 900,000 visitors from around the world have cruised along the 48-kilometer road, distinguished by a uniquely scenic route and a seven- kilometer panoramic view at 2,400 meters above sea level. The road is open from the beginning of May to the beginning of November and offers motorists as well as bicyclists and hikers stunning views of Austria's highest mountain in the midst of the Hohe Tauern National Park. The Grossglockner is, at 3,798 meters above sea level, Austria's highest mountain. Thanks to the monumental Grossglockner High Alpine Road it is no longer necessary to put on hiking boots to reach the summit. The panoramic road is 48 kilometers long and leads up to the high alpine elevation on two sides. One of its special features is the fact that it does not end at end of the glacier but far beyond the Pasterze, the longest glacier in the eastern Alps. The most spectacular view is afforded from the Kaiser Franz Josefs Höhe at 2,369 meters above sea level, from where the Grossglockner seems to be within reach. As well as 60 surrounding mountains over 3,000 meters high and the diversified fauna and flora of the Hohe Tauern National Park: marmots and ibex are the most noteworthy wayfarers along the Grossglockner High Alpine Road. Families, bikers and bicyclists can enjoy the unparalleled ride and wonders of nature. The Kaiser Franz Josefs Höhe is also the point of departure for a one-hour walk on the Gamsgruben Trail. The panoramic trail runs high above the magnificent Pasterze Glacier and depicts the mountain's mystic and "legendary" character in several tunnels. The Kaiserstein Panorama Trail leads to the Wilhelm Swarovski Observatory, where the glacier as well as the mountain climbers and wild animals can be viewed through modern telescopes. The alpine Glacier Trail from Kaiser Franz Josefs Höhe leads directly to the Pasterze Glacier and on to the Glockner House. The building of a monument The construction of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road is inseparably connected to the name of Franz Wallack. The young engineer was highly motivated when he took on the contract to build a panoramic road from the newly established Grossglockner High Alpine Road AG. Construction began in the summer of 1930. Nearly 4,000 men labored on the six-meter wide sand road for all of five years. The most modern high alpine road of its time was ceremoniously opened on August 3, 1935. The road was continuously developed for decades, starting at the end of the fifties. The road was widened to 7.5 meters, the radius of the hairpin curves was enlarged to 15 meters and the number of parking spaces doubled. The opening of the Hohe Tauern National Park in 1981 gave the Grossglockner High Alpine Road another important function: it provided access to the center of the National Park. Unique in Europe, a variety of natural history information points, exhibitions, nature trails and playgrounds were installed. The world's highest electric charging station for electric vehicles was opened in 2010 at 2,369 meters above sea level. Sixty million visitors have traveled on the road, Austria's most striking landmark, since it was opened. The Grossglockner High Alpine Road AG (GROHAG) Established in the 1920s, the Grossglockner High Alpine Road AG operates five mountain passes and a modern tourism company. In addition to the Grossglockner High Alpine Road it also operates the Gerlos Alpine Road, the Krimml Wonder World of Water, the Nockalm Road, the Villacher Alpine Road and the Goldeck Panorama Road. GROHAG employs over 100 people during the summer months, making it an important employer and economic factor in the region.
