HEIGHTS JUNIOR NETBALL CLUB NEWSLETTER
www.heightsnetballclub.com
Welcome to the November edition of the newsletter. Heights Junior Netball
Club is completing another fantastic year of netball with a firm focus on the
balance between fostering an inner northern sporting community, making
friends, learning team play and developing some impressive netball skills – such
things that have been shown to be very important in influencing girls’
participation rates in other areas of their lives and also being important to their
wellbeing. Checkout the World Health Organisation paper called GIRLS’
PARTICIPATION IN PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND SPORTS: BENEFITS, PATTERNS, INFLUENCES AND
WAYS FORWARD
Someone must have swung this report or something like it across to our state
politicians as interestingly a platform in the northern region of Melbourne, for
one of the major parties contesting the State election, is the promise to build
numerous netball courts in the region. Netball Victoria has identified this
northern corridor as being severely lacking in facilities to accommodate girls
that wish to play netball. This is the first time I can recall that netball facilities
have been tabled as an election issue – so here’s hoping for a flurry of courts
built in a timely manner. No deep tunnelling equipment needed.

Club Matters:
Spring Season Wrap:
Congratulations to the Heights Junior teams who are poised to contest the finals in the spring season.
Best of luck
 Under 13 C Reserve coached by Greta--- and hovering at 5th on the ladder with a
chance
 Under 15 D Reserve – coached by Sarah Collard sitting at number one on the ladder
and waiting eagerly for the finals
And to the two Thursday night Rep teams –both coached by Katharine Thomas (who was seen on one
occasion to be sprinting between games, quarter by quarter, on the evening the games clashed – both
teams had a victory on that occasion and seemed particularly inspired by the fact Katharine was running
but not puffing.
 U15 C – 3rd on the ladder with a bye next week are clearly in to the semi finals
 Open B6 – sitting 3rd on the ladder with one round to go but playing the top team this
week– it will be close
Thank you to all our coaches Katharine, Greta, Sarah, Alice, Kath, Ross, Sonya and Gayle for offering
your time and advice to the Heights netball players. To the team managers who keep the wheels
turning. And to all the players - keep throwing that netball over summer – through a hoop, against a
wall, to your neighbours or even at the pesky crickets who are invading your backyard on a summer’s
night. Don’t drop the ball over the holidays. See you in 2015.
Coach report for Heights 8 – from Kathryn Somerville

This team started the season excellently and had some good wins. The girls and boy have shown
huge improvement in their skills. The movement of the ball up the court, the goal shooting and
the defensive pressure shown has been great to see. The team always plays with great spirit and
although they have suffered some losses recently their enthusiasm for the game results in lots of
fun at training and during the game.

HEIGHTS JUNIOR NETBALL CLUB
ELECTION DAY CAKE STALL
Saturday 29 November 2014
LOCATION: North Fitzroy Primary School, Fergie Street, North Fitzroy
HOURS:
9am - 1pm
Our upcoming ‘Heights Junior Netball Club’ cake stall is aimed at raising funds so that in 2015 we can
fund a greater level of developmental activity for our umpiring and coaching staff.
All Heights families are requested to provide 2 cakes or plates of slices/cupcakes/biscuits, etc. for sale at
this event. The more goods available for sale, the more it translates directly into extra funds for the club.
Please note, as there is no available refrigeration at the stall, items requiring refrigeration will not be
accepted.
As the last of the home and away games for Heights Junior Netball Club teams will also be played on this
date, your contributions for sale at the cake stall can be dropped off at training on the Friday night or on
your way through to Parkville on the Saturday morning.
A small team of helpers is also needed to assist in selling goods at the stall. If you are available, even for
a short time, please email Jacinta Dimase (jacintadimase@ozemail.com.au) or Marnie Cahill
(cmjcahill@gmail.com) with details of your availability.
We will be selling goods alongside the legendary North Fitzroy Primary School Election Day ‘Sausage
Sizzle’ - which no one can resist.
Please note that food handling and labelling conditions apply at this event. All contributions must be
labelled, including a list of ingredients and the date baked. See labels to print and cut out for use below.
Contact Jacinta Dimase on 0424 505 608 or Marnie Cahill on 0411 674 008 for further information if

Looking to 2015
a message from Treasurer = Sarah Ewing
PARENTS & CARERS, PLEASE THINK ABOUT....
...becoming a volunteer parent helper around the club next year. To keep the junior teams (up
to U17s) running smoothly, we rely on parent helpers. There are two great ways of helping out –
one is to volunteer to be a team manager– and the other is to volunteer your time to join the
junior committee, which meets a about once a term.
Team Managers:
Team Managers are responsible for ensuring that there is a scorer available for each game for
your child’s team - and making certain that the score sheet is returned to the competition
offices at Parkville after the game. Managers also play a vital role in liaising with players,
families and coaches as a contact point for information; this is especially so if players are
unavailable to play. Being a team manager is a great way to get to know the players and other
parents – and it is not an onerous job. Please think about it for next year and let Marnie know if
you are interested, in either continuing as a team manager or becoming one!
(cmjcahill@gmail.com)
The junior committee looks after the interests of the junior part of the larger Heights Netball
Club. There’s something for everyone – it might be uniforms that take your fancy, or finances,
fundraising, the newsletter, the website or sponsorship! It is important that there are parents in
the wings ready to take on the mantle of parents wishing to retire– and, so to help our
succession planning it’d be great to have some new faces. Again, please give it a think. It will
give you the opportunity to help shape the junior club into the future.
Any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Gayle (Head Development
Coach; gayle.anderson@optusnet.com.au) or Marnie (Secretary) or Sarah
(Treasurer; saewing@bigpond.net.au)
A Message from Sonya
Please return any Heights netball dresses or skirts if you are not returning next year or if you are
upgrading to a bigger size or new style. The spare uniforms are really useful for new girls who
are trying out or just starting with Heights.
A Message from Gayle
Please let Gayle know what your intentions are for next season – staying or leaving so that the
club can plan how many teams to register in the 2015 autumn season.
AND AN IMPORTANT REMINDER TO ATTEND THE AGM
Date: Wednesday 3rd December
Time: 7pm
Location: Fitzroy Baseball Club- Merri Park, St Georges Road, Northcote
Please prioritise this meeting, as it is great way to help shape the club for the year ahead and we
need junior club member support at the meeting to help elect those committed people
