Postdoctoral Fellow – Archaeology Moore Institute Ref. No: NUIG 104-12 Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full time fixed term position as a Postdoctoral Fellow with the Moore Institute at the National University of Ireland, Galway. This position is funded by the Higher Education Authority and is available from November 2012 to contract end date of August 2013. The project, ‘Columbanus' Life and Legacy’, is led by Conor Newman and Mark Stansbury and will investigate the textual and visual evidence for the life and work of the medieval Irish missionary Columbanus, whose striking impact on European culture is still insufficiently documented and understood. The project will result, among other things, in the creation of new digital editions and archaeological surveys. Job Description: The successful candidate will assist with the planned campaign of excavations at Annegray in Autumn 2012, to incorporate the results of those excavations with the previous work on Annegray done by the project, and to extend that work by examining the post-Columbanian legacy. Qualifications: The ideal candidate should have a track record in a research environment and archaeological experience is essential, including a Ph.D. in the subject. The ideal candidate would have experience in excavations with multinational and multilingual teams, extensive knowledge of the life, career, and historical context of Columbanus, experience with geophysical exploration and the analysis of its results, and good knowledge of French and Italian. A knowledge of Latin and experience of Landscape archaeology are also desirable. Candidates should have excellent communication and organizational skills; be highly motivated and have strong interpersonal skills.
