A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
The protagonist of the Novel, Ebeneezer Scrooge, is a miserly old gentleman who has a
passionate dislike toward Christmas and the general revelry of the season, characterized
by his famous line 'Bah, Humbug!'.
On Christmas Eve, the ghost of his former business partner, Jacob Marley visited him.
Jacob was bound in chains, which, he explained, were his punishment for a life of cruelty
to the poor.
That night 3 ghosts visited Scrooge. The first Ghost showed him his Christmases past,
where Scrooge wasn't always a bad man. The Second Ghost showed him the Christmas
present. He saw the dismal condition of the life of the poor, especially of his secretary, who
had a large family, and his poorer nephew. They seemed happy, despite being poor, in
contrast to bitter Scrooge.
Scrooge showed remorse at last, as well as pity. Then the 3rd Ghost, of Christmas future,
showed him his grave, as well as the general public not caring about his death; auctioning
his goods, etc..
He woke up. It was Christmas Day. Scrooge was a different person and sat about helping
the poor, including his secretary, and enjoying life and celebrating Christmas.
