Extra notes for metadata catalog
Earthquake locations, 1840 to present.
Geographical extent – larger than state.
Progress – final version may be up to 2 months behind actual date
Maintenance – some (larger) events entered within a day or two
Lineage
Post 1964 – mostly from calculations based on readings from recorder networks, both
local and interstate.
1909 – 1963 – from calculations based on readings from broad Australian recorder
network, and also from newspaper and research reports (isoseismal maps)
Pre 1909 – from newspaper and research reports ( isoseismal maps)
Excel spreadsheet – started by Adelaide University, then Flinders University, then
State Government, collecting from other sources where relevant. Early event
locations were estimated from felt reports.
Magnitude – OK
Date – OK
Time – OK
Seconds – OK
Long – OK
Lat – OK
No stations – OK
Place – before 1989-2-1 this was place at which eq was felt. Note that from 1962 –
1968 when network was only starting, felt place may be better epicentre than
calculated lat – long!
Up to 1997-6-1 this was nearest town. Post 1997-6-1 includes town, direction and
distance.
Depth – depth of focus – note that this is nearly always much less accurate than
location. Usually needs a station very closeby for there to be much accuracy in the
depth. Depths of 0, 5 and 10 may be used as defaults.
Accuracy – extra note – accuracy A may be a mistake. Only a few locations have be
calculated with a local model. Nearly all locations in all areas of the state have been
calculated with the same, single layer velocity model. Accuracies I, J and K have not
been applied rigorously. The accuracy of an epicentre is heavily dependent on the
location of recording stations. If an epicentre is within the recording network, it is
likely to be much more accurate than if it is outside the recording network. This
information is not available in this dataset. Recording network has slowly changed
from paper to digital starting in 1989. Most of the relevant stations have been added
below, with reduced location accuracy.
Other notes – Occasionally mine and quarry blasts have been included in the dataset.
In particularly epicentres SE of Woomera, in the Olympic Dam region, and in 1978 in
the Adelaide Hills are mostly likely to be blasts.
Table below contains most of the relevant stations used to calculate the epicentres.
Lats and Longs have been rounded to about 1km accuracy. Start dates and end dates
are in form yy-mm-dd. First station was in 1958. 58 to 99 are Years 1958 to 1999
and 00 to 13 are years 2000 to 2013. 99-99-99 means station is currently running.
