FARCEBOOK DIRECTIONS –World History …Facebook for the historical world Here is a new way of researching a person from history and presenting the information that you find on that person. The purpose of this assignment is to stimulate an interest in a historic figure and introduce historical researching. Choose a person from history you want to research and create a fake Facebook page. Use the “Farcebook” template to bring information to your peers on the person from history you have chosen. Follow the requirements written below. Farcebook Page 1 – Information and Wall posts ALL INFORMATION MUST BE FACTUAL! This is where the research comes in. You must select a person from history that was born before 1500 AD. PRETEND YOUR PERSON IS NOT DEAD. THE PERSON MUST BE OF HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Don’t choose your Grandma or Justin Bieber. Use a person from your textbook if necessary. If you’re unsure, consult the list on the last page or ask/email Mr. Justice). IF YOU ARE QUESTIONING INFORMATION OR IMAGES THAT YOU ARE USING, ASK MR. JUSTICE. BE PREPARED TO ANSWER QUESTIONS BASED ON THE INFORMATION YOU PLACE ON YOUR AUTHOR’S “FARCEBOOK” PAGE PROOFREAD! THESE PAGES WILL BE DISPLAYED FOR OTHERS TO VIEW First, fill out a username and status for your historical person. The status should make historical sense. Then research all the information you can find about your person (more on this later). Then insert a picture and caption for your person. Adjust the size of the picture so it fits in the frame. Make sure the caption is at least 2 sentences. Complete the Information and Bio sections – The Bio section should contain information about your person and be at least 3 sentences. Do not simply copy and paste – use your own words. Create at least 3 friends for your historical figure. These can be people your person knew, relatives, or even enemies at the time. However, they must be contemporaries, or living at the same time. You can’t have Alexander the Great and Jay-Z as friends. Insert pictures and names of friends in the appropriate spaces. Finally, insert 4 posts on your historical figure’s wall. These can be statuses, replies, or wall posts from friends, and 2 must have more than one sentence. However, the statuses and wall posts must relate to facts from your figure’s life or relationships he/she may have had in the past. Additionally, one wall post must come directly from a primary source either written by or about the person you choose. If you have any questions, consult the example given or ask Mr. Justice. Farcebook Page 2 – Research and Citations All history is learned through a process of historical research. This assignment is a way to ease you into researching historical topics and presenting the information in your own words. Fortunately, this research simply asks you to find information on a historical figure and present it in a new way. The second and final page of your Farcebook will be a separate “Citations” page. This is where you will include all hyperlinks for web pages or references for books used. If you find a picture or information on your historical figure, simply copy and paste the URL into your citations page, or copy the author and name of the book used. Make sure to cite any work you use. You must have at least 4 citations! Although it isn’t necessary for this assignment, proper MLA format is encouraged and a citation maker can be found here: http://www.easybib.com/ . We will discuss historical research in depth and improve our research habits throughout the semester. A few notes about web resources: Do not use Wikipedia. Wikipedia pages can be altered by anyone, and it is therefore not a reputable source. However, Wikipedia includes sources at the bottom of each page that could lead you to the information as well. Try using websites such as http://www.biography.com/people and http://www.history.com/ . The search bars will be helpful tools. If you Google your person and don’t immediately find something, don’t give up! Research is a process, but it is very rewarding in the end. For example, instead of typing “Abraham Lincoln,” narrow your search to “Abraham Lincoln birthday.” Important: Academic dishonesty (copying and plagiarizing someone else’s work) will NOT be tolerated. Do not go on the internet and copy someone else’s page. It defeats the purpose and will result in a grade of ZERO and parent contact. Start the semester off the right way. If you have any questions, consult the example. I am always just an email or tweet away as well. Farcebook Page Presentations Finally, each student will give a brief 2-4 minute presentation of their chosen historical person and Farcebook. In the presentation, briefly describe the highlights of your historical figure and include any relevant details for the class. Creativity and humor are especially encouraged.
