Dear GBEMS Families,
At the School Advisory Council (“SAC”) meeting on October 16, 2014, at the request
of various members of the GBEMS community, SAC addressed the issue of expanding and
updating the GBEMS modified dress code policy. After discussion, it was determined that
the current dress code language needs both revision and expansion in order to best serve
the student population.
The current modified dress code policy reads:
“Uniforms are mandatory at Gulf Beaches Elementary Magnet School. Boys and girls must wear
collared shirts. The color choices are forest green, navy blue, and white. Boys and girls must
wear khaki bottoms. Shorts are permitted. Girls may wear jumpers.”
The proposed amended policy reads:
“Gulf Beaches Elementary Magnet School (“GBEMS”) is a mandatory uniform school.
All students at GBEMS will wear their uniforms daily, except for the following days:
* Individual school picture day
* Other special events (a call or note will come home to alert families)
Tops
* Polo style, collared/sleeved, solid color shirts in navy, forest green, or white
* No designs or patterns on shirts
Bottoms
* Navy blue or khaki shorts, pants, skirts, skorts, jumpers or capris
* Shorts, skirts, jumpers, and skorts must be at least fingertip length
Outerwear
* Solid color sweatshirts, sweaters, and jackets in navy, forest green, or white
* No printing or designs allowed on outerwear
* Winter coats not required to be school colors, but can only be worn outside of classrooms
Shoes
* Students are required to wear closed-toe, closed-back shoes, such as sneakers or athletic shoes.
No hard-soled, open-toed or open-back shoes, sandals, or crocs are allowed.
Fridays are School T-Shirt Spirit Days! Please support our efforts in increasing school spirit on
these days by wearing your GBEMS shirts! GBEMS shirts are sold through our PTA. Order
forms are available in the front office.
The school principal will determine appropriate consequences for noncompliance with the
uniform policy. Consequences for being out of uniform will be shared with families at Open
House in August.”
SAC will be voting on the revised policy at our next meeting, currently scheduled for
Thursday, November 20th at 6 p.m. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns regarding
the new policy, please contact SAC Chair, Erica Kramer, at sac.chair.gbems@gmail.com.
Thank you very much for the opportunity to represent you through SAC this year!
Sincerely,
Erica Kramer
