Dear Doctoral or Master’s Applicant,
RE: Your application to read for a Doctoral or Masters’ degree in Anthropology
in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Johannesburg
Thank you for contacting us and indicating your interest to read for a higher degree in
Anthropology.
Please be aware that we can only accommodate higher degree projects according to
our supervisory expertise and capacity within the Anthropology unit. If you are not
familiar with us, consult our website and other media to learn more about the staff
and their research interests and expertise before you submit your formal application.
Note that the minimum entry mark for a higher degree is 65% in a previous
Anthropology degree (Masters for Doctoral, and Honours for a Masters’ applicants) or
in a cognate field of research (such as Archaeology).
To start the application process, you need to send the following documents to as
attachments to an e-mail to Prof Marlize Lombard [ mlombard@uj.ac.za ]:
1. Your full CV with the contact details (e-mails and telephone numbers) of three
academic references.
2. A cover letter in which you indicate why you would like to study with us,
provide a topic for your thesis/dissertation, and if possible, who you would like
to be your supervisor (see UJ Anthropology website for lecturers and ‘google’
them to find out what they do).
3. Your full academic transcript.
4. A short (2-3 page, including a few core references), informal research
proposal, so that we can assess your writing skills and whether you are up to
date with the main trends in your chosen field of study.
The set of documents will then be circulated to all the anthropologists in the
Department, and collectively we will assess whether you are a suitable candidate for
a higher degree in Anthropology at UJ. We might invite you for an interview, should
we have any questions, and if we have not met you before. Usually you should
receive correspondence from us within a month of submitting your documents,
providing that you do not submit them immediately before the June/July or
December/January recess periods.
Sincerely,
Marlize Lombard
