WMU in opening Olympic ceremony

The televised opening ceremony of the Olympic games in China included a
performance by seven WMU students and alumni. The World Youth Choir is directed
by Bobby McFerrin and WMU Professor of Jazz, Dr. Stephen Zegree. More

Student places in Miss Michigan pageant

WMU senior Allison Porrett, is a 21-year-old civil engineering major. She placed as
fourth runner up and received a $3,000 scholarship in the Miss Michigan pageant.
Porrett qualified for the Miss Michigan contest by winning the title of Miss
Kalamazoo County last year. More

WMU names assistant basketball coach

Rick Carter has been named assistant coach of the WMU men’s basketball team.
Carter joins the Broncos after spending the last two seasons at Fairfield University
in Fairfield, Conn., and the 2003-06 seasons at Michigan State. He is also well versed
in the Michigan AAU scene after coaching current Broncos Michael Redell and David
Kool while working with the Michigan Mustangs from 2000-03 and 2006. More

Two earn national awards

Courtney Buck of Broomfield, Colo., was awarded a Boren Fellowship to conduct
biofuel research in Kenya and Jamie LeBlanc-Hadley, of Houston, Texas, was
awarded a Boren Scholarship to attend Beijing Language and Culture University.
More Professor's book earns national recognition Dr. Sandra L. Borden, WMU
professor of communication and media ethics specialist, has won the 2008 Clifford
G. Christians Ethics Research Award for her book "Journalism as Practice:
MacIntyre, Virtue Ethics and the Press." More
