It is an Adult (16+) Open Level class for committed individuals of all abilities who want to work creatively towards exciting performance opportunities within International Dance Festival Birmingham (IDFB), May 2016. The tutor will work with the DX Performance Group to create performance pieces for Put Your Foot Down, and other possible opportunities within IDFB. Participants from the group will also have the option to apply to participate in other performances during the festival based on specific need and dates. (Put Your Foot Down is a two day outdoor showcase of performances which will take place at the back of the Bullring on 14 & 15 May 2015) About DanceXchange DanceXchange (dx) is a dance house dedicated to the production and distribution of high quality dance. As part of that core mission, dx creates initiatives that research choreography, and develops innovative participatory projects. About International Dance Festival Birmingham Produced by DanceXchange and Birmingham Hippodrome, International Dance Festival Birmingham (IDFB) is a major biennial festival that presents a world-class programme of performance and participation in theatres and public spaces across Birmingham and the West Midlands. About the Class Programme Taking place in the three dx studios on evenings and weekends during term time, our recreational class programme offers over 36 dance classes each week in a diverse range of styles, including Argentine Tango, Street Dance and Modern Jazz. The programme offers a wide range of classes, with classes for people of all ages, from 3 to 60 plus; and in most styles there are classes for kids through to teens and adults, from beginners to advanced levels, enabling life-long progression. dx has an open access policy and seeks to encourage people to have a go whatever their experience; to support this, classes are run on a pay-as-you-go basis, to create flexibility. Criteria We are ideally looking for a practitioner to work as part of the team who is working as a freelance artist, so this work can fit alongside their current activity. The tutor will need to have their own public liability insurance, and as with all dx staff, tutors will be expected to undertake a DBS police check to ensure their suitability to work with children and vulnerable adults if you do not have one. Skills and experience Successful candidates will: - have excellent teaching skills with a proven track record have sound knowledge and experience of creating work for community participants of all styles and abilities be confident in their delivery skills, creating a warm, supportive and nurturing environment for participants be motivational and inspiring have excellent up-to-date knowledge of safe practice in dance be able to work inclusively in their delivery of classes, accommodating people from a diverse range of backgrounds, including those with disabilities be reliable and punctual have excellent communication skills be confident in acting as an advocate for DanceXchange, having relevant knowledge of current programmes and projects have Enhanced DBS clearance* have the appropriate insurance be registered as self-employed (we are recruiting for on a freelance basis) have an enthusiasm for dance The enthusiastic tutor will be required to be an advocate and ambassador for both DanceXchange and the performance group, supporting as required to promote the group and encourage participants to be involved using existing networks and contacts. The tutor must be available to deliver all Thursday evenings of the first term. Term 1 will be a pilot of the group, with the anticipation that it will take time to build interest. It is then hoped that the same tutor would continue on to term 2, and 3 after a review and mutual agreement. dx quality-control measures include a monitoring system, with a peer-review element where tutors observe and give feedback on a colleague’s class. This role is contracted on a freelance basis at £30 per hour. There will also be an additional fee of £100 for the first term if you are able to support with the recruitment of the group members.
