CMS Professional Development Catalogue for GENERAL
Statement of Philosophy
Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools is committed to offer teachers and staff quality professional learning
opportunities that are grounded in research-based best practices. The following catalogue describes
the professional learning opportunities that are scheduled for the 2013-14 school year. Teachers will
find Program Implementation Workshops, Regularly Scheduled Specialty Meetings, Instructional
Strategy Courses, and Data-driven Instruction Courses that support the district Strategic Plan, as well
as school and division initiatives.
Consistent with professional learning standards outlined by Learning Forward and the NC
Department of Public Instruction, most offerings extend beyond a single session to an on‐going
professional community that meets on a regular basis for the purpose of learning, planning,
implementing, and problem solving.
Whether in a workshop or course setting, the goal of each professional learning experience is to
support continuous improvement, exploration, and reflection in order to advance the academic
achievement, physical safety, health, and emotional well‐being of our students.

DIVERSITY
DIV FA13 Culture
In The Classroom
13505.20220 Educators today hear a lot about gaps in education
– achievement gaps, funding gaps, schoolreadiness gaps – but there is another gap that
often goes unexamined: the cultural gap between
students and teachers. The truth is that culture is
more than a list of holidays or religious traditions or
language; it is a lived experience unique to each
individual. This thought-provoking workshop focuses
on how educators can effectively incorporate a
cultured response to education in the classroom.

Associates of Dr. Margarita Calderon, author of
Preventing Long Term ELs, Transforming Schools to
Meet Core Standards. They will learn how to become
strategic teachers of tiered vocabulary before, during,
and after reading, that will help increase the depth of
comprehension for their students. This reading
program uses all four language domains of reading,
writing, listening, and speaking and works under the
belief that ALL teachers are literacy teachers. ExC-ELL
blends well with other initiatives, such as SIOP, and
zeros in on reading comprehension, while at the same
time promoting language practice for English Learners
in all subject areas. This workshop will be interactive
and allow participants to have hands-on experiences
with the strategies they will be learning about.
