The Westside Story
From the Editor:
Parenthood: A How-To-Manual
Having known great parents and
being lucky enough to become a
father, I decided to write a book on
parenting. Here is what I think the
Table of Contents will look like:
- Sleep deprivation
- Constant cleaning and wiping duties
- Bad smells
- Endless renditions of "The Wheels
on the Bus" and other songs
- Sacrificing meals
- Knowing the location of all public
restrooms
- Handling the sound of Elmo's highpitched voice
- Kissing boo-boos
- Hugs galore!
- Driving several hours for a 45 minute
soccer game
- Relearning Algebra
- Clothes shopping (surviving the Mall)
- Explaining the birds and bees, or the
birds and the birds, or the bees and
bees (whichever the case)
- Bullies and self-defense
- Internet safety
- Some good "When I was a kid we
never had…" speeches
- Introducing The Beatles
- Patience (even when none is left)
- Loving and caring no matter what
Now, I am no expert but I have seen
some good examples of how to
handle all these events and qualities.
All of this, of course, is so that we can
avoid Harry Chapin's song, "Cats in
the Cradle" from becoming about us.
This is not a job for the squeamish. It
takes a lot of guts.
As we get ready to celebrate Mother's
Day and Father's Day, let's take some
time to thank all parents out there.
They may come in non-traditional
packages nowadays but the job and
the responsibilities are the same…it is
all about the children. Thank you,
Mom and Dad!

A huge thank you goes out to everyone who helped me with the
Easter Plate Sale! We collected $878 from ticket sales and
donations. Thank you for those who donated their time, for those
who bought tickets and ate the food and to those who donated
items. I am SO blessed to be a part of such a supportive
community! The money raised is going towards my seminary costs
and I can't thank you enough for helping me in my journey. I love
you all!

Hear Ye! Hear Ye!! Hear Ye!
Calling all you generous donors…
It’s Spring! So, it’s time for us to start finding money
for our neighborhood young people who are going to college
this fall.
For the scholarship fund raiser this year, some of us have
thought that it would be a great feat to raise money by
making a quilt honoring Mrs. Juanita Rivera who was an
outstanding member of Divine Redeemer for so many years.
Her children, Irma, Lucy, Hiram and Homer along with their
children have remained extremely active members of our
church all these years. All of them are very interested and
concerned about education. Juanita was very interested in
education for children, she helped in all areas of community
and church life, visited the sick and those having problems.
She was a great friend and parent.

PEACE PALS & House of Teens
As the school year comes to an end, PEACE PALS is
looking forward to summer vacation! Time Dollar will have
garden classes and lunch for children in the morning from
10am-12pm Wednesday through Friday. PEACE PALS will meet
12-3pm in the yellow house for activities or at Woodlawn Pool
for swimming.
Another exciting part of our summer will be
‘Campamento de Paz.’ We will take a break from regular
programming the last two weeks in June for a summer camp
experience. Each day from 9am-5pm children will participate
in camp activities such as crafting, singing, story telling,
swimming, and of course s’mores roasting. The first week will
feature a play day in the river at Pastor Rob’s cabin, and
overnight camping for the older children. The second week we
will head to the ball park to watch a San Antonio Mission’s
game. All children in grades 1st-5th are welcome to register.
Please keep us in your prayers as we complete our last
weeks of school.
Peace, Hope and Kathryn
Over the last month and a half House of Teens has continued our adventure into cultures of the
world. We covered Africa in which we had the privilege of a guest speaker, DWELLer Jamie Karnetsky. She
made some traditional Kenyan food and showed us pictures of the time she spent there. The youth also
learned how to write in hieroglyphics from Egypt, as we learned that Egypt is indeed in Africa! We then
moved from Africa on to Jamaica. So far we have watched a movie about the Jamaican bobsled team that
was very entertaining as everyone tried to copy the accents. We also spent some time exploring Reggae
music and learning to write poems in the lyrical styles of Reggae. As we race towards the end of school
House of Teens is learning and having as much fun as we can.
Peace,

A Few Words from Our Pastor
“Remember the Sabbath…to keep it holy.” Exodus 20:8
On Sunday April 14th, I preached at Oak Hills Presbyterian Church. They and their pastor, Katheryn Barlow-Williams,
have been awarded a Lily Sabbatical Grant, and she asked if I would come and share about my/our experience with
them. I used the commandment about keeping the Sabbath Rest as the scriptural jumping off point to share my
thoughts about Sabbath/Sabbatical and some of the fruits that have been the result of my Sabbatical journey.
Some of the central thoughts I shared were the conviction I now have that God has imbedded the rhythm of rest into
the fabric of Creation and that we ignore that rhythm to our own peril. Working on the Sabbath was an offence
worthy of the DEATH PENALTY in Israel…yes, you read that right…the DEATH penalty. I shared then that in Chinese,
the character for the concept of ‘busyness’ is a mash-up of ‘heart’ and ‘killing.’ Apparently the Chinese and the
Hebrews were listening to the same Divine Wisdom! We have lost this rhythm in our society…and the evidence is
manifold. Keeping a Sabbath-space in our lives enables us to restore balance.
I shared how Jews understand the Sabbath to be a ‘Sanctuary in Time’ a sacred space in time, just like the physical
sanctuary in which we worship is a sacred physical space. Ideally what we do in the physical sanctuary makes holy
ALL space, the home, the neighborhood, the workplace. Similarly, what we do in the sacred architecture of time
made separate and holy by a Sabbath, can make the way we spend ALL our time holy.
Some of the fruits of this Sabbatical Sanctuary for me have been the re-establishment of my morning and evening
prayer devotions, the hallowing of my days off and a commitment to do what restores my spirit on those days,
setting aside a day for study so that I am not writing sermons at the last minute every week, and integrating the
physical/spiritual practice of yoga into both my personal life and ministry. The Sacred Sanctuary of Sabbatical has
helped me create a sacred Sabbath each week. Keeping the Sacred Sabbath Sanctuary each week has helped instill a
holy dimension of rested peace to all my days.
While I was away last summer, Don Arispe led a Sabbath retreat attended by about 15 persons. A number of you
have begun asking if we can do a follow up retreat this summer…I would LOVE to do a follow up, and Lucy Rivera and
I have begun looking for dates and places to do so. I pray that many of you who struggle to find that restful center in
your lives will consider participating. Remember…busyness is ‘heart-killing’…not just as in heart attacks, but also in
terms of killing the ‘heart and soul’ of our lives, that center that offers passion and fulfillment. Let’s all try to step
out of regular time…and into the sacred sanctuary in time that is Sabbath rest.
Blessings! Rob
The Westside Story
Troop 52 is on the move. In April, the troop went on a camp out to Spring Branch, thanks
to Rob Mueller offering the use of some land in exchange for some Boy Scout elbow grease. The
boys all had a good time and are looking forward to some fishing and canoeing once the weather
gets warmer.
Max Lerma earned the Eagle rank after a lot of planning and hard work. The project for
Peace Pals was a great success thanks to church members, friends, and family support. An Eagle
Court of Honor is being planned and will be announced when details are finalized.
The scouts are getting ready for another Merit Badge University at Northwest Vista College
on May 11. Sixteen boys are scheduled to go; each will be earning an average of three merit
badges ranging from Pulp and Paper to Emergency Preparedness. Going to MBU gives the boys
a chance to advance in rank, visit a college campus, speak with professionals in their respective
fields, and best of all, they get a chance to meet and become friends with boys from all over San
Antonio.
On Saturday, May 18 is the Troop 52 BBQ plate sale. The boys will also be selling sodas
and baked goods. This fundraiser will help the boys go to summer camp, the biggest event of the
year, and will also help fund the hikes and camp outs for the year. Please consider buying plates
not just for yourself but for family and friends. Buddy's BBQ is definitely not to be missed!
On Friday, May 24th, in order to reinforce the importance of community and civic service, the boys
are going to Ft. Sam Houston Cemetery to place flags at the grave sites of United States veterans
in honor of Memorial Day.
Thanks to Sally Rios, the boys will have the opportunity to volunteer with the running
community in San Antonio. This will get the boys to be more involved in healthy activities and
hopefully inspire them to a more active lifestyle.
Also, thanks to Silbia Esparza for offering up volunteer activities for the troop. The boys
look forward to helping Time Dollar.
If you would like to help the troop, either with your time, your donations, or your
suggestions, please contact Xavier (Buddy) Vazquez, Jesse Lerma, or Mary Lerma.
Excelsior!
Sharing Team Report
We are three months into the 2013 fiscal year. The offerings are keeping with what was pledged but we are
not anywhere close to what we budgeted for this year. We knew going into the 2013-budgeted year that we were
going to be at a deficit and we are where we thought we would be at this point of the year. Our deficit at this time is
$11,608.00. We are hopeful that more members will eventually step up and reduce this deficit at some point in the
2013 fiscal year. We will continue to provide all the programs that we have enjoyed in the past and that our
predecessors worked so hard to implement. This is a challenge to all the members of our church to contribute as
much as possible to keep this church and its programs working for the community and us.

Divine Redeemer Session Report
This year we celebrated three Seder meals successfully.
The following new members were received on March 31, 2013: Oscar Javier Chacon, Jr., Adriana Netro,
Laura Melissa Rodriguez, Laura Leticia Rodriguez, Janet Lynn Trevino Elizarraraz, Edward Augustus Gildemeister.
The next Presbytery meeting will be on June 14& 15, 2013 at Schreiner University in Kerrville, Texas. Our
commissioners will be Rosalinda Maldonado and Hiram Rivera. Rev. Dick Kreutzer, moderator of Mission Presbytery,
sent a letter regarding Martha Flores’s resignation of her position on staff at Mission Presbytery. The personnel
committee met with her prior to unanimously accepting her letter of resignation effective March 26. They do give
thanks to Martha Flores and her service to Mission Presbytery.
Easter Services were well attended at the Sunrise Service, at the combined service, at Via Cruces, and the
Maundy Service. Great work from the Loving Ministry team. Commendations also for their work on getting us more
connected as one church instead of two separate ones. They are preparing a special presentation for Mother’s Day.
They are preparing for the presentation of Pentecost Offering on May 19 and also how the funds are divided. Forty
percent of all offerings are retained by the church with the balance sent to the P.C. U.S.A.
The Sharing Team reports that we have paid our portion ($2500) of the Property Assessment Expense. The
final report has been received. D.R. has a team of Rudy Guerrero, Lauro Urribe, and Buddy Vazquez to look at the
report and determine the responsibilities of the expense. This property and expense will be the biggest
consideration that we will have before us. We need to be in constant prayer for guidance on this issue.
The Serving Team is very proud of Max Lerma’s achievement reaching the level of Eagle Scout with his
project—the boxes he made for Peace Pals located in the Fellowship Hall. Great job Max! The Boy Scouts are having
a BBQ fundraiser on May 18—all come and support this fundraiser. Overeaters Anonymous held in Spanish is
encouraging a Spanish OA group being organized in Houston, Texas. For our Homebound members-- Alex Cornejo,
David Rivera, JoAnn Saldana, Maria Luisa Santiago, and Sylvia Sanchez have become a music group. They visit the
homes of church members to provide music (Spanish service hymns and Spanish Love Songs) as well as to read
scriptures and hear their prayer concerns. They visit once per month.
M.E.Y.O.—The Serving team is developing a job description for the M.E.Y.O. director. As director, he/ she will
be responsible for fundraising, grant writing, bible study for the H.O.T., Peace Pals, and our church youth, mission
trips, and college programs.
On Sunday, April 28, a picnic for H.O.T., Peace Pals, and the entire church community will be held at
McAllister Park. This picnic is sponsored by Trinity University volunteers; they will provide food, music, and games.
Tip Integrity Act—Mi Tia—Mr. Dillon Danney and Maria Soto presented information about issues at the
Grand Hyatt Hotel and S.A. Convention Center. They desire our congregation to support T.I.A. which is a community
effort to right a wrong. Tips to River Walk hospitality workers are being routinely diverted from the workers (maids,
porters, etc.) to the employer (hotel, convention center.) They said that tips customers notate on their hotel bills DO
NOT make it into the hands of the workers but rather the hotel keeps the funds. Currently, there are four city
council members who support T.I.A.
Time Dollar on May 11th, a Mother’s Day Plant and Bake Sale will be held at the Salinas House across the
street from the church to benefit the Time Dollar programs.
The Growing Team was very instrumental in the care of our new member classes that brought new
members.
They conducted three successful Seder meals. They are taking the necessary steps in planning the H-E-B
neighborhood retreat. They have also committed to provide seminarian care to Kelsey Penn who is in the process of
becoming an inquirer.
They have also committed to begin exploring options for a summer mission trip for church youth/ families.
Please consider attending the H-E-B retreat and encourage members/ visitors to attend as well. Retreat scheduled
for September 27, 2013. Everyone is welcome.

Pastor’s Report
Still living at the cabin—has had Troop 52 campout twice, his pastor group twice, and an urban ministry
group coming out on May 22. Would like to plan Session Retreat in September out there. He enjoys sharing the gift
of that place! Natalie is coming home on July 16th. Teaching yoga classes (all three) continue and will end the last
week of May. Taught new member classes, led three Seder meals, D.R. Men’s monthly (toolbox for Christian men)
gatherings. All teaching right now is focused on practical, concrete ways that we can live our experience of the Holy
One more fully in day to day life. Peace Camp will be June 17-21 and 24-28. Will be chaplain at John Knox Ranch July
21-27.
Engineering Report
Divided the responsibilities for different repairs and began prioritizing dealing with this and the decision
about it are the next big piece of work for us as a congregation/ ministry partnership. Reenergize the “Dream Team”
now to begin digesting this and making plans.
Session Notes provided by Lucy Rivera
Presbytery Report
The March 2013 Presbytery meeting was held on March 1 & 2 at Shepherd of the Hills Presbyterian Church in Austin.
Among the 435 commissioners attending were Rosalinda Maldonado and Hiram Rivera from Divine Redeemer.
As always there were pre- Presbytery workshops. I attended one led by Karen Stocks, stated clerk, on Synod
and G.A. Amendments, from 10am to noon.
The Presbytery convened 12:45 and after declaring a quorum, we started with a worship service including
the Lord’s Supper. The General Council had designated John Knox Ranch as recipient of the offering. The offering
collected was $4025.00, which will be used for scholarships to John Knox this summer. The sermon by Rev. Larry
Coulter was on the scripture from John 15: 1-11, which starts off: “I am the vine; you are the branches.”
Before going on break, we divided into groups of five or six to answer three questions for Presbytery. (1)
One (or more) pieces of evidence that the congregation I serve is a healthy congregation. (2) I believe that there are
opportunities in place where our congregation is located to be a more profound witness to the love of God in Jesus
Christ and of these are: (3) In order to respond to the opportunity to be a witness to Jesus Christ in our place my
congregation needs to be equipped in the following ways.
After break we heard from the Finance committee, among other reports. Eldon Sheffer, chair of the
committee, first informed us that after closing the year 2012 we ended in the black with a balance of $7512.00. The
2013 budget was about the same as 2012 with very few changes.
The day’s business ended with a Service of Remembrance for: Teaching Elders, Ruling Elders, and Deacons,
who passed away during the year 2012.
On Saturday, the Presbytery reconvened at 9am, following the morning worship service. We heard reports
from General Counsel, Board of Pensions, before voting on G.A. Amendments.
We voted on ten G.A. Amendments, one of which had nine parts. Two of the amendments were voted down
along with one of the nine parts.
The voting on Synod was for restructuring of leadership plus cutting down the commissioners from each of
the eleven presbyteries from 4-2.
After all the voting we heard reports from the following: Committee on Preparing for Ministry; John Knox
Update; Bastrop Faith Village Fire Recovery; Church Development and Evangelism; Nominating Committee; Clerk’s
Report.
The Presbytery meeting adjourned at 11:10am. The next meeting will be June 14 &15 at Schreiner University
in Kerrville.
