Traffic realignment to close westbound I-70 continuing night of June 14 Continuing Thursday, June 14, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will close all lanes of westbound Interstate 70 between Central Park Boulevard and Quebec Street in order to remove concrete barrier and realign westbound I-70 traffic into its final configuration following bridge reconstruction. Eastbound I-70 between I-270 and Quebec Street was placed in its final traffic alignment last week. To complete the work, the following lane closures will be in place June 14, for the traffic realignment, weather permitting: Westbound I-70 between Central Park Boulevard and Quebec Street: Continuing on the night of June 14, one lane of westbound I-70 will be closed at 7 p.m. with a second lane closing at 10 p.m. and all lanes closing at midnight. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. the following day. Detour: Motorists on westbound I-70 will exit at Central Park Boulevard and be guided by detour signs to Northfield Boulevard then west to Quebec Street and then south on Quebec Street where access to westbound I-70 is available. Major delays are possible and alternate routes are strongly advised. CDOT would like to remind motorists to obey all construction signs and flaggers and to “Slow for the Cone Zone.” The realignment is part of a project that replaces the eastbound and westbound I-70 bridges over Sand Creek, which are located between Quebec Street and I-270, with one structure. The replacement of the bridges will accommodate longer acceleration and deceleration lanes from Quebec Street to I-70, which will improve safety for motorists entering and exiting the highway. The existing eastbound I-70 structure was originally constructed in 1960 and the westbound I-70 structure was constructed in 1964. Both bridges are in poor condition. Lawrence Construction Co. is the contractor for this $8 million project scheduled to be complete by the end of June 2012. The project is being funding by the Colorado Bridge Enterprise, which uses a small portion of vehicle registration fees to repair or replace poor bridges. Smith Road closed overnight some days in June for utility construction related to commuter rail line Smith Road will be closed for utility construction related to the Eagle P3 Commuter Rail line between Sable Boulevard and Victor Street in the vicinity of Interstate 225 on the following dates: June 1, 7 p.m., through June 5, 6 a.m. June 15, 7 p.m., through June 19, 6 a.m. When not completely closed, traffic will be limited at various times to one lane from the June 5 to 15 or until the work is completed. Alternate routes of Colfax or I-70 are advised until the utilities in this area can be relocated. Variable Message Signs will be set up later this week on Smith Road at Peoria and at Chambers Road. Construction work on Colfax at I-225 scheduled through July Through July, construction is occurring on Colfax Avenue at Interstate 225. Delays are possible, and alternate routes are advised.
