Solar Energy Physical Phenomena Stage 3 Lesson Time: 1 Hour Description: This lesson fits into a Science and Technology unit of work on Energy. In this lesson students learn about solar energy. Students will participate in a video dictagloss and work in pairs to produce a flow chart explaining the process of solar energy. Outcomes Science & Technology PPS3.4 Identifies and applies processes involved in manipulating, using and changing the form of energy. English TS3.2 Interacts productively and with autonomy in pairs and groups of various sizes and composition, uses effective oral presentation skills and strategies and listens attentively. WS3.9 Produces a wide range of well-structured and well-presented literary and factual texts for a wide variety of purposes and audiences using increasingly challenging topics, ideas, issues and written language features. Indicators Explains how solar power works Takes notes from a video, summarising key points Makes a decision to work constructively with others, using a range of strategies to participate cooperatively Records information from video Plans writing with others through discussion Contributes to a joint construction of a flow chart Assessment Mark and collect student notes and flow chart to assess how relevant their information was and if it was sequenced in the correct order using shapes and arrows to explain the sequence. Informal observation of student ability to work collaboratively and productively whilst participating in group work. Lesson Sequence Activity Timing Resources Introduction: Give students 2 minutes to discuss the following question in 2 minutes pairs. Questions: What is solar energy? Why might we need solar energy? Select a few pairs to share their discussion. 3 minutes Body: Explain to students they will be constructing a flow chart. Show and discuss with students an example of a flow chart. 5 minutes Example flow chart Questions: How do you read a flow chart? Who might use a flow chart? Why are flow charts beneficial? Video Dictagloss The flow chart will be created by gathering information from a video. Explain to students they must watch the video. At the conclusion of the video they have 5 minutes to discuss in pairs and write down key information that they saw. View the video for the second time, this time students are able to write notes whilst viewing. At the conclusion of the video, students can exchange and gather notes from other pairs at their table. 10 minutes http://www.yout ube.com/watch? v=qCCljek7g4&feature=re 15minutes lated Viewing the video a third time may be required. Teacher judgement advised. From this information, the pairs are required to construct a flow chart to show the process of solar energy. Conclusion Where have you seen solar energy used in the world?
