2nd Quarter 2014 Newsletter The Salvador Foundation is committed to serving God by bringing together people from all walks of life for the common cause of helping our fellow man. We, as the body of Christ, have a responsibility to care for those in need. By helping and enabling people one project at a time, our goal is to share encouragement, hope and faith. Roatán is the largest of the Bay Islands, and is located approximately 35 miles off the northern coast of Honduras in Central America. Roatán is 32 miles long and varies in width from one to three miles across. The highest point of Roatán is roughly 900 feet above sea level. The island's topography includes white sandy beaches, mangrove wetlands, rocky shorelines, rainforest-covered hills, and lush valleys. Roatán is rimmed by a spectacular section of the second largest reef system in the world. The population of the Bay Islands is estimated at around 80,000, with about 60,000 of those on Roatán. English is the first language of the island but there is a large Spanish influence with an influx of people from mainland Honduras. North West Side of Roatán However, just a few short miles away, the scenery of Roatán is quite different. On the south side of the island, there are no resorts and living conditions can be very difficult, Most of the locals are uneducated and survive on just a few dollars a day picking up odd jobs and surviving on a diet of mainly rice and beans. Because of its English speaking people and beautiful Caribbean location, Roatán has become a destination resort for both US and European vacation travelers. The northwest end of the island in particular is known for its white sandy beaches and unparalleled diving opportunities. South West Side of Roatan The Salvador Foundation is currently teaming with an organization in Roatán called the Abundant Life Foundation in an effort to provide a good education, a safe environment and an opportunity to purchase affordable housing for the locals of the area. Key to achieving this goal is to provide a good education, job opportunities, a safe environment and an opportunity to purchase affordable housing. As part of this effort, the Abundant Life Foundation is developing a community called Los Sueños which means “The Dreams”. Los Sueños will have a school, church, playgrounds and roughly 100 affordable homes. The Salvador Foundation will be supporting the Abundant Life Foundation’s efforts by funding the school, church and portions of the playground areas. Construction of a six-room school house has recently been completed and Church construction is scheduled to be complete in the summer of 2015. We are very pleased to be able to team with the Abundant Life Foundation on the Los Sueños community effort.
