Directions: Label the diagram below with the following choices: Nucleotide Base pair Deoxyribose Hydrogen bond Phosphate group Nitrogenous base 1. ____________________ 6. ____________________ 2. ____________________ 5. __________________ 4. ____________________ 3. ____________________ Label the 3’ and 5’ ends of both DNA polymers 1 Directions: Complete each sentence. 7. Guanine, cytosine, thymine, and __________________ are the four __________________ in DNA. 8. In DNA, guanine always forms hydrogen bonds with __________________. 9. The process of __________________ produces a new copy of an organism’s genetic information, which is passed on to a new cell. 10. The double coiled, “staircase” shape of DNA is called a __________________. Directions: Answer each question in complete sentences. 11. What do the letters DNA stand for? _________________________________________________________________________ 12. Where is DNA found? ____________________________________________________ 13. Label the nucleotides (A, T, G, C) in the DNA molecule below, identify the 3’ and 5’ ends: 14. What is the first step in the process of DNA replication? 2 15. What is the first step in the process of DNA replication? _________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________ 16. Which enzyme is responsible for “unzipping” the DNA double helix? _________________________________________________________________________ 17. Which enzyme is responsible for facilitating the hydrogen bonding between nucleotides in a new DNA molecule? _________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________ 18. Which enzyme is responsible for creating the covalent bonds that connect the sugarphosphate backbone of the new DNA molecules? _________________________________________________________________________ 19. If the sequence of one single strand of DNA is C-A-A-G-T-A-G-G-C-T, what is the sequence of the complementary strand? _________________________________________________________________________ 20. Describe the origin of each strand of the new double helices created after DNA replication. _________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________ 21. Why is DNA replication important to the growth and development of a multi-cellular organism? _________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________ 22. Place the following terms in the correct order from smallest to largest: Nucleosome, supercoils, coils, chromosome, DNA double helix _________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________ 23. List the 3 basic steps of DNA replication: a. _________________________________________________________________ b. _________________________________________________________________ Original c. _________________________________________________________________ 3 A T C C G T G 24. The model of DNA below is ready to be copied. Compared to the original double helix, evaluate the copies made during three attempts of DNA replication. List any errors with the replication if they occurred: A T C C G T G Replication #1 T A G G AND C A C Replication #2 A T T A C G C G G C T A G C AND A T C A G T G T A G G C A C A T C C G T G T A G G C A C List problems if any: _______________________ _______________________ _______________________ _______________________ _______________________ _______________________ T A G G C A C List problems if any: _______________________ _______________________ _______________________ _______________________ _______________________ _______________________ 25. Complete the diagram on the left. Then circle the areas in the diagram on the right that show a genetic mutation. Explain how the mutations might have been caused in the diagram above. _________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________ DNA - Episode 1 of 5: The Secret of Life - PBS Documentary https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7ET4bbkTm0 Published on Mar 21, 2013 In 1973 two scientists undertook an experiment which rocked the world. By transferring DNA from one species to another, Herb Boyer and Stan Cohen became the first Genetic Engineers. Their experimrnt triggerd a wave of controversy about the dangers of genetic manupulation, but it also generated a multi billion dollar industry. Biotechnology would soon transform the pharmaceutical industry and genetically modified food was to herald the biggest revolution in agriculture since the industrialization of farming. Yet the public was skeptical, and so were certain scientists. Some feared that a cancer-causing gene stitched into the DNA of a bacterium might be accidentally absorbed in the human gut, enabling cancer to be passed on like an infectious disease. Biologists from all over the world were called to a meeting in California to draw up a strict set of safety guidelines. When the panic subsided the stage was set for a biotechnology bonanza. A race began to produce genetically engineered insulin. A couple of years later a young researcher called Rob Horsch, who worked for the chemical giant Monsanto, produced the first genetically engineered plant. The biotech revolutions had arrived. o o Category Education License Standard YouTube License DNA - Episode 2 of 5 - Playing. God - PBS Documentary https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3wg-W3Slow 6
