Committee Role Descriptions
President:















Figurehead of the Society.
Ensuring that the Society’s operates in accordance with its Constitution and
the Articles of Association, byelaws and policies of the Union.
Attending Union training sessions as appropriate.
Calling General and Committee Meetings of the Society.
Organising fair and transparent elections for the following year’s committee.
Stands as the point of contact between The Union and the Society members.
The President is mandated to keep in regular contact with the relevant
Student Support Officer of the School of Mathematical Sciences.
Authorises the withdrawal of expenditure from the society’s account.
Demonstrates good communication skills, confident public speaker.
Well-organised, able to balance studying and running the society.
Devoted and passionate about mathematics.
Responsible for organisation and coordination of co-curricular events such
as academic and careers talks or conferences.
Coordinates the organisation of curricular and co-curricular activities.
Allocates tasks to other committee members.
Respects opinions and views of the society’s members.
Vice President:









Second in command in the society. In unexpected situations, is allowed to
replace the President for a specific time period.
Responsible for creating committee meeting agendas, and minuting these
meetings.
Coordination of the epsilon group, a group of mathematics society members
who would like to engage more in the organisation and coordination of
events.
Stands as the point of contact between the QMUL careers centre and the
Society members.
Helps the President to implement the society’s vision such as creating drafts
of emails and applications for grants.
Creating, communicating, and implementing the society’s vision, mission,
and overall direction.
Responsible for the organisation and coordination of co-curricular events
such as academic and careers talks or conferences.
Liaising with other QMSU Societies.
Responsible for conducting a survey at the end of the first semester.
Treasurer:









Keeps updated accurate financial information of the society's activities.
Ensures the financial transactions made through the union, are conducted
in accordance with the guidance provided by the student union.
Authorises the withdrawal of expenditure from the society’s account.
Attending union training sessions as appropriate.
Ensuring that all relevant financial documents are retrieved from the
previous treasurer and passed on to the next treasurer.
Works towards gaining and maintaining sponsorships.
Applies for student union grants.
Applies for grants from various mathematical institutes.
Creates a society budget to present to the School of Mathematical Sciences.
Marketing and Advertisement Coordinator:







Writes emails and messages to members to keep them informed about the latest
society’s events.
Maintains the Maths Society Facebook and Twitter Pages.
Responds to inquiries from members.
Creates flyers and posters to advertise the upcoming events.
Giving shout outs and short presentations before lectures.
Creates events pages and sells tickets on the student union website/Eventbrite.
General Promotion of the Society i.e. during fresher’s fairs.
Social Secretary:






Responsible for the organisation of social events that would satisfy the demands of a
diverse group of people.
Responsible for acquiring discounts for various events such as: karaoke, movies, gokarting, restaurant dinners etc.
Demonstrates good organisational skills to coordinate these events.
Manages coffee mornings and monthly pub nights i.e. takes care of refreshments,
games or karaoke equipment.
Presents excellent communications skills so relationships with various recreational
companies can be strengthened.
Advertises events with the assistance of the Marketing and Advertisement
Coordinator.
