Description:
In pairs, compare the populations of two distinct nations over the course of the last century and use some
inference to glimpse into the future. Prepare a short report, no more than 4 pages of written text, which
should include the population pyramids from both locations over the period of your investigation.
Instructions:
1. Select two nations, which are geographically distinct and separate from each other.
2. Research and collect population pyramids for both locations over the course of the last century
from the following time periods (in all cases use the earliest possible data): 1913-1938, 19501970, 1980-2000 and Present day (or as close to as possible).

3. Describe both populations and compare them through each point in time, covering the following:
a. Population stages at each period of measurement
b. Population growth/decline
c. The dependency load
d. Possible historical factors influencing BR, DR, ER, IR.
4. Infer how each population will look through: 2030, 2060, 2090, covering the following points:
a. Population stages at each period of measurement
b. Population growth/decline
c. The dependency load
d. Possible historical factors influencing BR, DR, ER, IR.
Creating graphs for each of these years will prove very useful and is recommended.
5. Type your findings in an APA formatted report with properly cited population data. Include
population pyramids and a list of references (properly formatted) in your report. The text in your
report should not be more than 4 pages long.
Success Criteria:
Thinking skills (__/10): Thorough critical thinking skills are demonstrated in your description of
factors influencing population growth/decline and factors that are affecting BR, DR, IR, ER. You show
considerable thinking about what causes a population to change over time. See parts 3&4 b&d.
Application skills (__/10): Thorough application skills are demonstrated through the inference of future
populations. Thought and application of your ideas on factors influencing changing populations are clear
and thorough. See part 4.
Communication skills (__/10): Report is thoughtful and well written, including proper APA formatting
and referencing. You are able to demonstrate superior communication skills through writing clearly and
making your thoughts easy to understand.
Knowledge Skills (__/10): You are able to demonstrate thorough knowledge of populations, reasons for
demographic change and the ability to read population pyramids. All questions and points to cover on
this assignment are well done and thorough. See parts 3 & 4
