Duties of Houseman: Intake every 3 days, admitting of patients, clinical history and physical examination. Presentation of the case with diagnosis to Registrar. Responsible for own patients, taking bloods, drips, bookings and investigations, collecting results etc. and assisting in theatre in the surgical procedures of own patients as well as other ward patients. Average of 10 – 15 patients per houseman, ward capacity of approx. 40 patients. Ward round with Registrar every morning, with Consultants every third day and with all Professors once a week. 1982 - JANUARY TO JUNE Houseman in Medicine, Prof. Seftel Unit at the Hillbrow Hospital. Basically as above, but clinically orientated. More patients per Houseman, performing all types of procedures (lumbar punctures, pleural tabs, abdominal tabs etc. Also larger number of academics meetings. 1982 - JULY TO DECEMBER Senior Houseman I Medicine, Dr Asvat Unit, Hillbrow Hospital. Basically was the same work as first semester of 1982. 2 1983 - JANUARY TO JUNE Medical Officer in Rheumatology Unit in the Johannesburg Hospital with Dr A Gear. The duties were to do the day clinics for Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis, Connective Tissue Disorders and Haemophiliacs. When admission was necessary, we were in charge of patient management. Many academic meetings, journal club and presentations. 1983 - JULY TO DECEMBER Medical Officer in Nuclear Medicine Department with Prof. Levine at Hillbrow and Johannesburg Hospitals. Here I learned the principles of Nuclear Medicine and reporting. Each hospital had 3 gamma-cameras. 1984 - JANUARY TO JUNE Registrar in the Radiology Department with Prof. Sher. Duties included reporting x-rays at Casualty, 2 months in Nephrology and 2 months in Gastroenterology. During this time I realized that Nuclear Medicine was for me, therefore I left the prestigious Registrar post in Radiology. 3 1984 TO DECEMBER 1991 I had a Medical Officer post; 4 years of Registrar post and the rest as a Senior Medical Officer and Consultant. The duties were to be completely in charge of the Department, from seeing patients, reporting, scanning, research and academic meetings. The calls were for one week at a time in the Johannesburg and Hillbrow Hospitals. The departments did all kinds of Nuclear procedures, from simple to sophisticated ones. I have worked with Monoclonal Antibodies, and my thesis and paper was on that subject in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma . We were also trained to treat carcinoma of the thyroid gland, and we were completely in charge of those patients and of the Thyroid Clinic. Daily academic meetings, weekly with other specialities, physicians, surgeons, radiologists, renal transplant unit, pulmonology etc. Presentation of papers at National Congress. 1985 - PRIMARY EXAMINATION The subjects were Anatomy, Pathology, Physiology, Physics and Statistics. These consisted of 3 written papers of 3 hours each and 2 orals. 1986 - JUNE TO DECEMBER MATERNITY LEAVE. 1987 - INTERMEDIATE EXAMINATION The subject was Radiobiology which consisted of 2 papers of 3 hours each. 4 1989 - FINAL EXAMINATION The subject was Nuclear Medicine with 3 papers of 3 hours each and 3 orals with Professors of different specialities. 1990 - JANUARY TO JUNE MATERNITY LEAVE. 1991 In 1991 the Government opened another Department at Strydom Hospital, with one mobile gamma-camera, of which I was in charge. I mainly did cardiac work and cases for the Department of Surgery. That year I got ill with encephalitis and it took me a long time to recover, but thank God I had no complications. During 1990 and 1991 I wrote my dissertation. At the end of the year I left the National Hospitals. 1992 - JANUARY TO APRIL I worked in Private Practice for Professor Esser at the Rand Clinic. 5 MAY 1992 - AUGUST 2003 I set up my own Private Practice and the Sandton Oncology Centre. I purchased an Elcint gamma-camera and all the necessary equipment. I invested R1 000 000.00 In this Centre there were 2 Oncologists and 2 Radiotherapists. I did not have a partner and worked alone with my Radiographer. I also employed an accountant. I did thyroid, lung, gastric, liver, bones, cardiac venous system and endocrine scans. I do not have experience on functional brain imaging. I did thyroid carcinoma patients and I also treated thyrotoxicosis with radioactive iodine. I have not been much connected with the academic world, however I do attend interesting meetings from time to time. I have been the chairperson of the Private Practice Nuclear Medicine Group of South Africa. I have a modem and discuss interesting cases with my colleagues. I also do locums for them by way of the modem. I still do my own calls and I am able to do everything, from scanning, processing and programs, although some of them are not very fresh in my memory. 1994 - JULY I set up a Private Nuclear Medicine Department in Sunninghill Hospital. 1998 I opened a Private Nuclear Medicine Practice in Peglare Hospsital, Rustenburg. 6 2001 I formed an association with Professor Vangu and we opened the following Private Practices: JULY 2001 Springs Parklands Hospital MAY 2003 Sandton Clinic SEPEMBER 2004 Bedford Gardens Hospital I formed an association with Dr C Libhaber and we opened the following Private Practice: JANUARY 2007 Mulbarton Hospital All the above Practices are currently running with the exception of Sunninghill and Sandton Oncology.
