1. Explain what is meant by two only of the following:
a) Palatals are the sounds produced by the help of the hard palate. The hard
palate is the concave middle part of the roof of the mouth. It helps in the
production of the palatal sounds, e.g. /ʃ/ and /Ʒ/ as in fish and vision,
respectively.
b) Stops are the sounds characterized by a complete air passage closure that
stops the airflow in the mouth and releases the sound with the air relief.
These sounds are also called plosives, e.g. /p/, /b/, /t/, /d/, /k/, /g/.
c) Labio-dentals are /f/ and /v/. They are produced by narrowing the air
passage by the lower lip and the upper front teeth. The mechanism of
producing each of these sounds starts when the air starts its trip out of the
lungs moving upward in the vocal system. As the soft palate is raised to
close the nasal cavity, the air has only one passage to go out through the
mouth. It passes through the oral cavity till it reaches a part where the air
stream is very narrowed by the lower lip and the upper front teeth. It
forces itself gradually out of this narrow passage producing friction with
the sound. The vocal cords viberate on the articulation of /v/ producing
voice. The voiceless /f/ is found in words like feel /fi:l/, left /left/, roof
/ru:f/. The voiced /v/ is found in words like van /væn/ , over /ͻ:vər/, leave
/li:v/.
Figures are provided to support the answer.
