Athena SWAN Newsletter
Edition Two
This Edition: Supporting Athena SWAN at Wolverhampton
The theme of this second edition of the Athena SWAN Newsletter is 'Supporting the
University of Wolverhampton's Athena SWAN Initiative'. We are taking the opportunity
to thank those who have or who are supporting Athena SWAN, reiterating that Athena
SWAN principles support Gender Equality per se, and identify how you can get involved.
We have received supportive comments from those pictured above; (left to right)
Baroness Professor Susan Greenfield, BBC Broadcaster and Professor of Public
Engagement with Science at Birmingham University, Alice Roberts (photo by Lorian
Reed-Drake) and Rob Marris, MP for Wolverhampton South West. Their statements
supporting the University of Wolverhampton's Athena SWAN initiative that can be
viewed on the Athena SWAN webpages (see below for link).
We would also like to recognise the support of the women and men who have joined the
Athena SWAN Self-Assessment Teams and Executive Steering Group. There is a balance,
and unity, between the genders on these teams that reflects the principles of Athena
SWAN for facilitating the acceptance and inclusion of women and men in careers where
they are under-represented as a gender group.
University's Athena SWAN Staff Competition Entries
Thank you too to staff who entered the Athena SWAN competition for suggestions to
improve gender equality in Science Technology Engineering Maths and Medicine
(STEMM) subjects. There were ten entrants and multiple suggestions were made, adding
to the qualitative data that has been collected in surveys of staff in the 4 departments
aiming for individual departmental awards. All of these ideas and feedback are welcomed
and will help to frame Athena SWAN recommendations and initiatives.
A competition winner will be announced in December for the best idea that it is possible
to implement.
Rosalind Franklin Appathon - National App Competition
Challenge 1: To develop new mobile phone apps to empower women in STEMM. The
competition is open to both women and men. Whether you’re a complete novice with a
good idea, a wannabe coder or a seasoned app developer, we want to hear from you!
Challenge 2: To recognise leading women in STEMM who have pioneered new apps for
research and societal good. Help us identify and support the female role models who are
making a difference by submitting a 200 word nomination statement.

CELEBRATING SUCCESS
Dr Tracey Devonport has been made a Fellow of the British Association of Sport and
Exercise Sciences (BASES) for her contributions to BASES and the Sport and Exercise
Field.
Coinciding with this honour the BASES professional publication 'The Sport and Exercise
Scientist' is leading with Tracey's article 'Athena SWAN or Ugly Duckling?' in its current
Winter 2015 edition. A copy of this will be made available to read on the Athena SWAN
news webpage.
Tracey is the Athena Swan champion for the Institute of Sport and is helping to prepare
our application for an Athena Swan silver award for the Institute in 2017.

Training Support
Through the Athena SWAN project a media training session was delivered to staff in
September and we are also facilitating training to data administrators in Advanced Excel.
There are plans to offer further media sessions in the future. All recipients of media
training have been invited to meet the University's Press Officer to captialise on the
training. Each of these initiatives was as a response to training needs identified through
work toward the forthcoming Athena SWAN reaccreditation submission.
Supporting Career-break Returners
We met with the Chief Executive and Trust manager of the Daphne Jackson Trust at their
Research Conference in October. We are currently exploring with them the possibility of
supporting a Daphne Jackson Fellowship at the University of Wolverhampton. These fellowships
provide a route back into STEMM research for women and men who have had a career-break.
Further updates on work with the Daphne Jackson Trust will be circulated in due course. Find out
more about Daphne Jackson here.
