WEL OVERVIEW
The Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement (LEADS) at Spelman College
presents the twelfth annual Women of Excellence Leadership (WEL) Series, a
certificate program designed to train students for leadership roles in the global
community. This powerful series—developed in keeping with the College’s
objective to cultivate change agents for a civil and just society—features leadership
experts, entrepreneurs, noted faculty, community leaders, and prominent corporate
partners as leadership development agents for WEL participants.
The application process is open to juniors and seniors only. Applicants must have
demonstrated leadership while attending Spelman and must have a 3.0 GPA in
their majors to be considered for the WEL program.
By studying the leadership skills demonstrated by African American women
leaders and others, WEL students develop the values needed to become the type of
authentic, servant leaders that chart new courses for change in the 21st century.
Areas of leadership development include identifying leadership types and styles
and developing a personal leadership mantra.
The 2016 WEL Series convenes with a mandatory retreat in January. The WEL
retreat is followed by eight required sessions. The WEL Series closes in March
with a WEL graduation. Sessions are held Thursday evenings from 6:15 p.m. to
8:00 p.m. Attendance is required for the retreat, all sessions, rehearsals for
graduation, and graduation.
Business attire is mandatory for Thursday sessions. Business attire is defined as
dress appropriate for leaders in work environments. Jeans are never worn to
LEADS meetings.
