September 2015 Dear HES Parent(s)/Guardian(s), Thanks to the support of the PTA, the HES Math Department is very proud and excited to announce its first year of participation in the Continental Math League (CML) Challenge, Euclidean Division! The Continental Math League is a national math problem solving competition designed to allow your child to try difficult and challenging math application problems. This opportunity is open to ALL students at Hebron Elementary School. Throughout the year, participants will have the opportunity and are encouraged to complete OPTIONAL practice problems to familiarize themselves with the type of problems they may see during the meets and to continue to develop their problem solving skills. These problems are intended for independent, at home practice (this would be in addition to the regularly assigned homework from classroom teachers). All children are encouraged to work at their own pace to complete the problems and then turn them into the main office for the Math Department to review. We have included a few sample problems on the back of this flyer. Answers will be revealed in the October Newsletter. There will be three meets per year for grade 3 (January, February & March), and five meets for grades 4-6 (November, December, January, February & March). Meets will be held during the regular school day, and will be no longer than half-an-hour each time. Though top scores will be sent to the national recording office to gauge school participation, we are less concerned with the competitive aspect of the program and more concerned with giving your child an additional math enrichment opportunity. A celebration for regular participants will be held in the spring. We hope this opportunity offered by the Math Department will further develop your child's mathematical abilities while here at Hebron Elementary School. If your child is interested in participating in this opportunity, please fill out the bottom portion of this letter and return it to the main office for the Math Department, and we will send home your child’s first set of practice problems. Please feel free to call or email us with any questions. Thank you for your support!
