ЗаданиеВ2
Прочитайте тексты и установите соответствие между текстами А–G и заголовками
1–8. Запишите свои ответы в таблицу. Используйте каждую цифру только один раз.
В задании есть один лишний заголовок.
1. Good for everyone
5. An innovative idea
2. Easy to care for
6. Working clothes
3. Part of culture
7. Jeans’ labels
4. Screen fashion
8. Clothes to protest
A. Jeans are one of fashion's most long enduring trends. Cowboys wear them but so do
supermodels, farmers, presidents and housewives. Ask any group of people why they
wear jeans and you will get a range of answers. For some they're comfortable and easy –
for others they're trendy and cool. Jeans mean different things to different people but
they are popular everywhere.
B. Americans do not have a national folk dress with a long tradition. Blue jeans are
probably the most recognisable article of American clothing. They have been part of
American life for over 125 years. Blue denim jeans became not only an expression of
American fashion but also an element of American identity known around the world.
C. Jeans were first designed as trousers for farmers and miners in the states of the American
West. They quickly grew popular with common people, including cowboys, factory
employees and railroad builders. The new trousers were made from a very strong
material which did not wear out easily. However, at the same time jeans were very
practical and comfortable to wear.
D. Pockets were the weak point of the miners' clothes – they easily tore away from the
jeans. A man called Jacob Davis had the idea of using metal rivets (fasteners) to hold the
pockets and the jeans together so that they wouldn't tear. Davis wanted to patent his idea,
but he didn't have enough money, so he offered Levi Strauss a deal if Strauss paid for the
patent. Strauss accepted and started making jeans.
E. By the middle of the twentieth century, these heavy cotton trousers were a symbol of
opposition for young artists and writers. College students started to wear them to show
they were against the Vietnam War. The new trousers were banned in American schools
from coast to coast and sometimes in theatres and cinemas.
F. Jeans are good because they don't show the dirt. You can easily go a month without
washing them and they don't look shocking. They don't need to be washed as often as
other trousers and you don't need to iron them. What's more, because of the strong
material you can wear your favorite jeans for years. Even the occasional hole or spot
doesn’t spoil them at all.
G. In the 30s and 40s many people began to spend their spare time watching movies where
adventurous cowboys rode horses, fought bad guys and wore blue jeans. The actors made
jeans popular in movies and everyone wanted to wear them. Young people wished to
imitate the casual “cowboyish” look they saw in films, and they began to wear jeans as
casual wear.

The Art of Campfire Cooking
Pat Mac and Mike Faverman first met when they were comedians going on tour and organising
shows around the country. Later their love of food became a new hobby they had in common and
a new project.
Before they met in 2005, Mac had grown up cooking in his father’s restaurant in Idaho, and
Faverman had worked as a chef in restaurants across the US. They decided to combine their two
hobbies – making people laugh and cooking good food – into a travelling road show called
Ultimate Outdoor Cooking. The idea of the show was to prove that cooking by campfire out in
the woods is exciting but not always simple.
Mac had had a lot of camping experience before he met Faverman and it had taught him that
food was extremely important for people on vacation. Interestingly, better food brought more
people to the campground. When it was their turn to cook, the new campers started to give up
eating hot dogs and hamburgers and started to create new recipes.
Mac and Faverman have tried different types of camping together, each time experimenting with
the most suitable recipes. Their favourite dish for car camping, for example, is steak in lemon
juice mixed with salt and pepper. To keep the meat fresh, they keep it cool in a car while
travelling. Afterwards, when they get to the campsite, the steak is barbecued with red potatoes.
For travelling on foot with a rucksack they suggest either red potatoes with grilled and salted fish
or sausages with different vegetables like zucchini, cabbage, carrots and onions. The only secret
to keeping the vegetables nice and fresh while walking is to pack them properly and leave them
until ready to cook in a pan over the fire at the campsite.
As they do a lot of cooking, the most useful instruments for Mac and Faverman are plastic bags,
knives, a wooden rack to cut the food on and also matches and a lighter. Besides the latter, they
use electric things, which can be a little risky at times. For example, a couple of years ago Mac
was using an oven to slow-cook meat on a little grill. Suddenly one of the legs of the oven broke;
the grill itself and the pot fell to the ground and the meat fell straight onto the dirt. Luckily, Mac
used the “five-second rule”: just wash the meat off and put it back on the grill. He said later that
it tasted a bit sandy but the campers didn’t notice.
Unlike Mac, at the beginning of the project Faverman was usually unsuccessful at making a fire
and putting up a tent because he didn’t have enough experience. Later he became quite a skillful
camper who could give a useful tip or two to beginners. The best piece of advice from the pair
for cooking in the woods is to design the menu ahead of time and to know exactly what you are
going to cook on the first and second days. A good camper should try to make the first meal easy
because setting up camp takes a lot of time and effort.

A. When you think of the Irish, you often picture a red-haired person dressed all in green.
However, it's just a popular myth which has grown into a tradition, particularly in the
United States. It's customary in Ireland to wear green clothes only on St. Patrick's Day.
Lots of people are tricked by this cliché. However, originally, the colour associated with
Saint Patrick was not green, but blue.
B. In Ireland, the colour green was long considered to bring bad fortune. The reason is that in
Irish folklore green is the favourite color of the Good People (the proper name for fairies).
Myths run that they are likely to steal people, especially children, who wear too much of
the colour. In the past, a girl would never wear anything green on her wedding day.
C. Christmas is a very important celebration in Ireland. After dinner on Christmas Eve, it is
common for families to leave milk and bread on the table as a sign of friendliness and
kindness. Another custom is to leave the door unlocked. A lit candle is left in a window
during the night. It represents help for any traveller who is passing by.
D. Potatoes form the basis for many traditional Irish dishes. They are eaten boiled, mashed,
fried, baked, you name it. Potatoes are mixed with cabbage or green onions to make
traditional Irish dishes. They are also made into potato cakes and used in soups or stews.
It’s common to find potatoes cooked in two different ways on the same dinner plate.
E. The shamrock is still a popular sign of good fortune in Ireland. It is believed that anyone
who possesses one will be blessed with fortune in everything, even in gambling, and will
be saved from the evil of witches. There are certain conditions to be met so that its power
remains effective: the owner of the shamrock must keep it away from the public eye and
never give it to anyone else.
F. The name Gulliver is known to everyone due to the book or the film about the fantastic
trip of the English doctor. However, not all of us remember the name of the
author Jonathan Swift, an Irish writer, who was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1667. In his
book Gulliver’s Travels a man went to an island where strange tiny people lived. His life
there was full of adventures and dangers, he met there friends and enemies.
G. Ireland is known as the native land of limericks – short humorous poems that have five
lines. They make people laugh and are easy to remember! Lots of poets and writers were
fond of limericks. The word ‘limerick’ probably comes from the Irish town of Limerick.
The short poem has made the town known all over the world.

Eton
Within a ten minute walk of Windsor Castle, across a bridge over the River Thames, there’s an
old Gothic building. It is the legendary Eton College. It is one of England’s largest independent
schools and one of the highest in prestige. Members of the British royal family are traditionally
educated here. It was one of the best schools when first founded and remains so now; it is still
commonly known as one of the greatest schools among all the schools in the world.
Following the old tradition, Eton is a full boarding school, which means all students live and
study at the school with their fellow students throughout the school year. Eton is also one of the
four remaining boys’ schools, so there’s no opportunity for a girl to study there. Eton students
traditionally come from England’s wealthiest and most prestigious families, many of them
aristocratic. Boys enter Eton at about 13 and continue there until they are ready to enter
university.
The school was founded by Henry VI in the fifteenth century to provide free education for poor
pupils who would then go on to get a higher education at King’s College in Cambridge. That
connection no longer exists today.
All students have a uniform of a black tailcoat and a waistcoat, a white collar and dark trousers.
All students wear a white tie. This uniform is not for special occasions, it is worn at all times for
all classes. If you visit Eton during term time, you will see students walking the streets with
books under their arms dressed in their uniforms.
At Eton, there are dozens of organisations known as ‘societies’, in many of which students come
together to discuss a particular topic. The societies are traditionally governed by the boys
themselves. Societies range from astronomy to Scottish dancing and stamp-collecting. Some of
them are dedicated to music, some to arts, some to languages, and so on. Meetings are usually
held after supper and often include a guest speaker. Among past guest speakers are composer
Andrew Lloyd Webber, writer J. K. Rowling, designer Vivienne Westwood, and actor Ralph
Fiennes.
One of the oldest and most influential Eton societies is called the Pop. Its members are like
school head-boys or prefects who are given limited authority over other students. They are called
Poppers and take an active part in many official events of the school year, including parents’
evenings. While all students wear black waistcoats, members of the Pop are allowed to wear any
waistcoat they please. Prince William, when he was a Popper, wore a waistcoat designed like the
British national flag. The style immediately became popular.
Irrespective of this, the official colour of the college is the so-called ‘Eton blue’. It’s a light bluegreen colour which has been used since the early 19th century. The main purpose was to identify
Eton sportsmen in rowing races and on the cricket field.

A. A woolsack race is one of the British local festivals that could be called strange. It started
in Tetbury, a wool town, in the 17th century when young men wanted to demonstrate their
physical strength. Since then, every spring men and women compete in teams to carry
heavy woolsacks up and down the hill. The race events are complemented by a funfair
and musical entertainments.
B. Midsummer is the time for the Cheese Rolling Ceremony in many places. Competitors
gather at the top of a hill. The Master of the Ceremonies lets a heavy head of cheese roll
down the hill. Brave runners race down to be the first to catch it. Unfortunately, the event
was cancelled in 2010 due to safety issues.
C. Another cheese ceremony is popular in the village of Randwick. On the first Sunday in
May people roll three cheeses from right to left around the church. After rolling, the
villagers cut up and share one of the cheeses. They believe that eating cheese brings
health to their families.
D. The village of Marshfield, England, is famous for its Paperboys procession. People
dressed in paper costumes go through the streets. They start from the market place and
perform the town’s unique character play along the road. By noon they have done more
than six performances for several hundred people.
E. Every January Up HellyAa is celebrated in Scotland. People dressed in Viking costumes
and helmets go through the streets of Lerwick. They hold flaming torches, sticks with
special material on the top which burns in order to give light. The strongest participants
carry a full size model of a Viking ship to an open field. There the people throw lit torches
into the ship and burn it.
F. Melbourne Cup Day is held in Australia, in November. Although Cup Day is a public
holiday only in the city of Melbourne, the rest of the country refuses to be left out of the
event. People gather around televisions and computers, whether at work, at home, or
wherever they are, just to watch this world famous horse race. This event is often called
‘the race that stops the nation’.
G. In a village in Eastern England, an unusual race takes place every year. Three groups take
part in the race – adults, children (under 11s) and teenagers. Each participant receives a
frying pan with a pancake and has to race from one end of a field to the other, throwing
the pancake into the air and catching it in the frying pan without dropping it.

Lewis Carroll was the pen-name of Charles Dodgson, an English writer and author of two of the
best loved children's books in English Literature 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' and
'Through the Looking Glass'. The characters and phrases from these books have entered and
become part of the English culture so if someone calls you 'Mad as a Hatter', you know whom to
thank.
Charles Dodgson was talented in many ways. Apart from being a creative writer, he was also a
Mathematics Don (professor) at Oxford and a well-known logician. He was interested in
photography and music. He sang very well, played chess and enjoyed creating and solving
puzzles.
Charles Dodgson was born on 27 January 1832 and spent the first eleven years of his life at
Warrington, Cheshire where his father was the priest. His family was large; his parents had 11
children, 4 boys and 7 girls.
Charles was educated first by home-schooling, then at two boarding schools, and finally at Christ
Church College, Oxford. Later in life, he remembered his boarding school experience without
any warm feelings. Still, he was an excellent student and studied very well in all his subjects.
In 1854 Charles Dodgson got a 1st class degree in Mathematics and one year later he became a
lecturer in Mathematics at Christ Church College. It was then that he started his literary career
and took his pen-name, Lewis Carroll. While his creative books and poetry were published under
his pen-name, he also wrote books on Mathematics under his own name.
When a new Headmaster arrived at Christ Church College, he brought with him his family.
Dodgson became the family’s close friend. The Headmaster’s little daughters, the youngest of
which was called Alice, enjoyed his company very much. Charles often entertained the girls by
telling them stories about imaginary worlds with fantastic creatures.
The story about the adventures of little Alice became popular all over the world. ‘Alice in
Wonderland’ is primarily a children’s story, but adults have enjoyed the novel for over a century
together with children.
Many elements of ‘Alice’ were not completely new. Talking animals, for instance, or the story
idea in which a child or children are carried away from reality into a fantasy world. However, it
was Carroll who established a new motif that would be used again and again in children’s
literature: Peter Pan, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the Narnia books, and the Harry Potter
books. That is the possibility for the main characters to travel back and forth between the real
world and wonderland.
Though his characters travelled a lot between one world and another, Charles Dodgson himself
didn’t like being away from home. The only occasion on which (as far as it is known) he went
abroad was a trip to Russia in 1867.
He died of pneumonia on 14 January 1898 at his sisters' home. He was 2 weeks away from
turning 66.

A. Cheltenham started as a small market town that later became one of the most fashionable
health resorts in Britain. Once, in 1716 people noticed pigeons eating crystals in a
meadow outside the town. These were crystals of salt which helped King George III and
the members of the royal family treat their illnesses. Since then, pigeons have been a
symbol of Cheltenham Spa.
B. Cheltenham is a small, ancient town in England situated to the north-west of Oxford. It
lies below the highest point of the Cotswold Hills and above the level of the River Severn.
The town is also called ‘The Western Gateway’. Thanks to its position it has become a
popular tourist attraction.
C. The Pittville PumpRoom is the largest of the spa constructions in Cheltenham. It is a
magnificent, old house of classical style made of white stone. The Pump Room was
designed for balls and entertainments and, of course, for taking the medicinal waters.
Today, it is still used as a concert hall at festival time and for weddings, and of course,
visitors can still take the waters – if they so wish!
D. Tourism is highly developed in Cheltenham and the City Council has to reduce the
negative impact of tourists on the town. A lot has been done. The town has developed
walking, cycling and public transport routes as an alternative to cars. There is a pool of
bicycles that tourists can use for short distance journeys. The local services try to recycle
all the packaging, plastic bottles and batteries left by tourists.
E. Many famous people of the past have connections with Cheltenham. Gustav Holst, a wellknown English composer of the 19th century, was born in the town. His house is now his
birthplace museum. Visitors may learn a lot about Holst's life, his music and his family.
The famous Antarctic explorer Edward Wilson was also born in Cheltenham. Now a
statue of him stands in the Long Gardens.
F. The beauty and wonderful sights of Cheltenham continue to attract visitors from countries
all over the world. For many years people have enjoyed the beauty of Cheltenham's parks,
open spaces and the general greenery of the town. Cheltenham has been described as ‘a
town within a park’. Montpellier place, which is famous for its wonderful flowers, lies in
the centre of the town.
G. Thousands of visitors come to Cheltenham to take part in the festivals which are held in
the town every year. The town organises literature, music, jazz and science festivals,
attracting names with a national and international reputation from each field. Besides all
this, for a week in March the town becomes the centre of the National Gold Cup in horse
racing.

Mark Twain
Mark Twain wrote ‘The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn’ in 1884. Since then, the book has been
published in at least sixty languages, and some people say it is the best book ever created by an
American writer. American students have ‘The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn’ on their school
reading list and parents, teachers and literary experts still debate the problems touched in the
book.
The writer’s real name was Samuel Clemens. Samuel was born in 1835. He grew up in the state
of Missouri on the Mississippi River. After his father died, young Samuel went to work as an
assistant to a publisher. Ten years later, he became a pilot on a steamboat that sailed on the
Mississippi. He heard the riverboat workers call out the words "mark twain!" That was a measure
for the depth of water. Later he used this word combination as a pen-name.
In 1861 Clemens travelled west and became a reporter for newspapers in Nevada and California.
He wrote news stories, editorials and sketches under his pen-name Mark Twain. He became one
of the best known storytellers in the West. He developed his own narrative style – friendly,
funny, and often satirical, which won him a wide audience. The first success came with the story
‘The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County’.
Mark Twain travelled a lot during his lifetime not only round the USA but also to Europe and the
Holy Land. He naturally began writing books about his travels. ‘The Adventures of Tom
Sawyer’ was published in 1876, and soon after he began writing a sequel, ‘The Adventures of
Huckleberry Finn’.
It took Mark Twain longer to write ‘The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn’ than any of his other
books. He started writing in 1876, but put the story away after about two years of work. He
returned to it in 1883, and the following year it was published.
From the beginning, the book was strongly debated. Some critics praised its realism and honesty
but the others strongly disliked it. They protested against the personality of Huck – a rough, dirty
and disobedient boy. They could not agree that such a person should be the main character of a
book. What's more, critics disliked the way Mark Twain used the language of a common,
uneducated person to tell the story; no writer had ever done that before.
Today there is no longer any debate about the importance of ‘The Adventures of Huckleberry
Finn’ in American literature. In 1935 Ernest Hemingway wrote: "All modern American literature
comes from one book by Mark Twain called 'Huckleberry Finn.' There was nothing before. And
there has been nothing as good since."
No wonder then, that the novel ‘The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn’ was a great inspiration for
film producers – more than 20 screen versions of the book have been shot not only in America
but in Europe, Russia and Japan. There are feature films, musicals, cartoons and even Japanese
anime.

1. A widelyusedaroma
5. Anotheruniquecharacteristic
2. Makesmealsdifferent

3. A relaxingeffect

4. Scentsandcolours
8. Smellingemotions
A. Nothing brings back memories like a particular smell. Whether it's of Christmas pine,
your grandma's fresh-baked gingerbread, or cookies, the scents of Christmas are truly
special. In the days leading up to this day, the house fills with the wonderful rich, spicy
smells of vanilla, cinnamon and ginger coming from the kitchen, promising delights to
come.
B. Some of the most pleasant scents after a hard day are vanilla, lavender, and scents with
cinnamon or ginger. Each combination of aromas can influence you positively. For
example, vanilla's sweet scent can help you if you feel sad, lonely, or depressed. It is a
naturally warming aroma. Cinnamon is good in case you feel tired; it also has a wonderful
effect on your nerves, calming you down.
C. The ability to smell is linked to our ability to remember things. When you first smell a
new thing, you connect it to an event, a person, or even a moment. As a result, later the
smell of cookies might remind you of spending time at your grandmother's house when
you were a small child. When you come across the smell a second or third time, the link is
already there, ready to bring out a certain mood.
D. There are certain smells we can identify from a mile away – almost as if they're
preprogrammed into our minds. One of them is vanilla. Today, vanilla is in our coffee,
perfumes, tea, home products, body lotion, and everywhere! Both the scent and taste of
vanilla are very strong and long-lasting. It is considered one of the most popular scents
and flavours in the world.
E. A new study suggests that we can smell not only aromas but feelings as well – fear,
happiness, disgust and joy. The experiments proved that we can find out how a person
feels even if we neither see nor hear him. Nerves inside our nose take informative
messages about the person and his emotional state to the brain. However, the mechanism
of how this happens is not yet clear.
F. Our sense of smell does 80% of the job when we taste various foods. Without a sense of
smell you can’t taste the difference between an apple and a potato or a glass of juice and a
cup of cold coffee. This is why, when our nose is blocked by a cold, most foods seem
tasteless. Our sense of smell becomes stronger when we are hungry.
G. There are many good reasons to believe that we all have our own particular smell.
Research has proved that our smell might distinguish us from others just as our face does.
Our smell is as personal as our fingerprints. For centuries the police have used this
phenomenon to catch criminals. Maybeonedaytheywilluseourscenttoo.

One day young William was called to a lawyer’s office. The lawyer announced that William’s
uncle had left him a thousand dollars. He also added that William was required to give the
lawyer a report of how he used the money as soon as he spent it. That was his uncle’s last wish.
William promised to follow his uncle’s wish and went straight to his club. He looked for Bryson,
a calm wise man of about forty who was sitting in a corner reading a book. When William told
him about the contents of the will, Bryson did not seem at all surprised. He only remarked that
the uncle was worth about half a million.
William told Bryson that his uncle had left a lot of money to charity while his servants had
received only ten dollars each. There was one more person mentioned in the will, Miss Hayden,
a distant relative who lived in the uncle’s house. She was a quiet, musical girl and the dearest
woman in the world to William. William had been in love with her for two years but he had
never told her about his feelings.
William had no idea how to spend a thousand dollars and he hated making the report. He had a
feeling that his uncle was making fun of him.
In the street William saw a blind man selling pencils. William went up to him and asked him
what he would do with the money. The blind man shrugged his shoulders and said that he had
never seen such a huge amount of money and therefore had never had the problem of spending
such a sum. William bought all his pencils and gave him ten dollars above the asking price.
William was walking down the empty street when he had an idea.
He got into a cab and went to his uncle’s house where Miss Hayden lived. He found her, sad and
beautiful, writing letters in the library. William knew that like the servants she had received
nothing from his uncle but ten dollars. So he said that there was an addition to his uncle’s will
that allowed her to have a thousand dollars and he gave her the money there and then. Miss
Hayden turned white, took the banknotes and put them in the drawer of the writing desk. Then
she quietly thanked William and gave him a shy smile.
In excitement William went back to the lawyer’s office, ready to hand over the report. Suddenly
the lawyer took out another document which had been given to him by William’s uncle and
started reading. It said that in the case that William spent the money wisely, he was to receive
another fifty thousand dollars. On the contrary, if he had spent it in a foolish way, the fifty
thousand would go to Miss Hayden.
Smiling brightly, William destroyed the report and said he had lost a thousand dollars on the
races. William realised that he was going to lose much more than that but he felt happy about it.

A. As in many other European countries, Britain’s main newspapers are losing their readers.
Fewer and fewer people are buying broadsheets and tabloids at the newsagent’s. In the

published by the same company but not on week days.
C. Another proof of the importance of ‘the papers’ is the morning ‘paper round’. Most
newsagents organise these. It has become common that more than half of the country’s
readers get their morning paper brought to their door by a teenager. The boy or girl
usually gets up at around 5:30 a.m. every day including Sunday to earn a bit of pocket
money.
D. The quality papers or broadsheets are for the better educated readers. They devote much
space to politics and other ‘serious’ news. The popular papers, or tabloids, sell to a much
larger readership. They contain less text and a lot more pictures. They use bigger
headlines and write in a simpler style of English. They concentrate on ‘human interest
stories’ which often means scandal.
E. Not so long ago in Britain if you saw someone reading a newspaper you could tell what
kind it was without even checking the name. It was because the quality papers were
printed on very large pages called ‘broadsheet’. You had to have expert turning skills to
be able to read more than one page. The tabloids were printed on much smaller pages
which were much easier to turn.
F. The desire to attract more readers has meant that in the twentieth century sometimes even
the broadsheets in Britain look rather ‘popular’. They give a lot of coverage to scandal
and details of people’s private lives. The reason is simple. What matters most for all
newspaper publishers is making a profit. They would do anything to sell more copies.
G. If you go into any newsagent’s shop in Britain you will not find only newspapers. You
will also see rows and rows of magazines for almost every imaginable taste. There are
specialist magazines for many popular pastimes. There are around 3,000 of them
published in the country and they are widely read, especially by women. Magazines
usually list all the TV and radio programmes for the coming week and many British
readers prefer them to newspapers.

Supermarkets
It is believed that the idea of supermarkets first belonged to an American businessman who
opened a self-service grocery store in 1916. The main advantage of the new American store was
that the goods were stocked on the shelves, so the customers could take their own goods and
bring them to the front of the store to pay for them. Although there was a high risk of stealing,
the owner found the new shop’s organisation more effective because it allowed him to reduce the
number of shop assistants. Later the new shop organisation spread widely throughout European
countries.
Nowadays supermarkets are as British as football and cricket. In the UK 90% of all food is
bought at five different supermarket chains. That makes these companies extremely powerful,
especially when they deal with small businesses, for example farmers. Milk is a good example.
Supermarkets like to use things such as milk and bread, which are at the top of almost
everyone’s shopping list, to attract customers. To offer the lowest price the supermarkets need to
buy milk from dairy farmers very cheaply, so big supermarket chains agree on a very low price
and dictate it to farmers. If the farmers don’t agree to that price, supermarkets start to look for
the cheapest possible products abroad instead.
The consumers are of course happy to get cheaper products, but they should also keep in mind
the influence supermarkets have on the environment. First of all there’s packaging. Supermarkets
like all the products to be packed because it makes it easier to put them neatly on the shelves.
Consequently, supermarkets produce nearly 10 million tons of waste packaging in the UK every
year, less than 5% of which is recycled. Some supermarkets put large recycling bins in their car
parks, trying to create the image that they are environmentally friendly. However, that is just an
image.
To reach the supermarket shelves the products often have to travel half the globe. Due to
preservatives even milk products can stay unspoiled for months. It’s a great advantage for the
supermarket as yoghurt bought from a farmer can’t be kept for longer than 2 days. That is why
many small farmers do not even get a chance to compete with long-lasting imported goods.
When a new supermarket is planned, everyone says that a lot of new jobs will be created. In
reality the number of jobs lost in the area is greater than the number of new positions in the
supermarket. Within a 15km radius of every new supermarket that opens the number of people
working in the food business goes down. It happens because all the small shops nearby are
forced to close.

I’ve always been very good at languages. I can speak English and French and it helps a lot as I’m
in the export business. When we worked on some contracts with Russian companies, I decided to
learn Russian. I take lessons regularly and I’ve learned a lot of words, but there are very difficult
grammar rules in Russian, and there are so many exceptions! I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to
speak it.
Speaker B
My friends don’t think that learning foreign languages is important – English is understood
everywhere. I don’t agree with them. I want to start learning Italian. It’s a lovely language and it
sounds beautiful. I’ve got a pen-pal Mario, who lives in Italy, and I want to go there next year. I
think Mario will appreciate my speaking Italian. And travelling is more enjoyable when you can
communicate with the locals in their language.
Speaker C
English is my native language and I don’t have any problems when I travel – people can speak
English everywhere. That’s why I don’t feel motivated to learn foreign languages at school. But
according to the curriculum, I must learn two foreign languages. We start learning the first one at
the age of seven. Usually it’s French or German. At the age of 13 or 14 we choose the second
language - Italian, Spanish, Chinese or others.
Speaker D
Languages are very important in modern life. But learning languages is very difficult and time
consuming. The quickest way to learn a language is to go thecountry where it’s spoken. It works,
however, only if you communicate outside the classroom a lot. Watching the news, reading
newspapers and writing notes and emails helps a lot too. But the most important thing is not to
speak your native language to anyone.
Speaker E
Lots of adults want to learn foreign languages but have no time for it. Children, on the other
hand, have enough time but they lack motivation. The easiest way to get children to speak a
foreign language is to use it in a game. Young children are not
able to understand language rules, but they can easily imitate their teacher. Pictures and toys
work very well too – children pick up new words for toys very quickly.

Helen: There’re only two days left before Susan’s birthday but we haven’t decided on
anything about the present yet. I’m absolutely blank. I don’t have any ideas, do you?
Mike:
I don’t either. It’s difficult to choose a present for a girl. We can probably give her a
large birthday cake. All girls like cakes and sweets. How do you feel about it?
Helen: Don’t be silly. She’s on a diet and is trying to cut off on sweet things. She wants to
lose weight and doesn’t eat sweets, biscuits and cakes at all.
She’llneverappreciatethiskindof a present.
Mike:
OK, a book can make a good present.
Helen: No, it’s boring. And we don’t know what reading she enjoys.
Mike:
But I know. She likes historical novels and she likes adventure books very much. She
reads them a lot and I’ve seen lots of books in her room. She says that books are better
than computer games or films. It sounds strange to me, but she really said that.
Helen: Anyway. Even if she enjoys reading, a book will not do. I want to give her something
really original, a surprise she’ll remember for years.
Mike:
Then I know what we can do. Susan has always wanted to have a dog, but her parents
have always been against it. They probably think that it’s very difficult to keep a dog
in a flat or they may be afraid of dogs.
Helen: That’s right. She told me that she’d asked them to buy her a puppy, but they refused.

Exactly. It will be a great surprise, it will be very original, and she’ll never forget it.
But her parents? Do you think they’ll change their mind?
I don’t know. But as far as this is a present, they’ll have to accept it.
No, I don’t think that we can do it. Keeping a dog is a great responsibility. We can’t
just bring it in Susan’s flat. We need to discuss it with her and her parents first. Let’s
leave it for the future and find some less exotic present for this birthday.

Generally summer is better time for holiday than winter. Summer holidays for school students
are the longest, but, nevertheless, I believe that winter holidays are the best. They are intense and
exciting… and you can do winter sports like skiing and skating. New Year and Christmas add a
lot to the holiday atmosphere. Not only schoolchildren, but most adults enjoy being out of work
and classes and it’s fantastic time when families can get together and it’s real fun.
Speaker B
In my opinion we have too long of a holiday time during our school year. Winter holidays are
usually OK, they are quite intense due to the season holidays we have at that time (I mean
Christmas and New Year). And people normally have a lot to do during these holidays – they
visit families and friends, exchange gifts and have fun together. But in summer or autumn I don’t
know what to do when I don’t have to go to school. I feel bored and watch TV too much, which
makes me feel tired and even depressed. Probably if I had a hobby I would enjoy holidays much
more.
Speaker C
Yes, holidays are certainly the best time in our life, but my last holiday was a nightmare. The
trip, I had been looking forward to, turned into a disaster from the very beginning. I was fighting
problems every single day of my two-week holiday. I was late for the flight and had to wait for
the next one. Then my luggage was lost, which was more than unpleasant as it was winter time.
Then I got ill and had to stay in my hotel room while others were celebrating the New Year and
setting off fireworks right in front of my window.
Speaker D
If someone asked me about my idea of a good holiday, I’d tell them about our camping trip last
summer. We escaped from the city for a week and were living in tents on the river bank. Being a
city dweller, I’d never thought that stars could be so large and mysterious in the dark sky. But
the best thing was long conversations and playing the guitar near the fire. We were talking about
friendship, love and our hopes and dreams. I’m absolutely sure that no luxurious resort or
expensive hotel at the seaside could ever compare with our holiday on the river.
Speaker E
Like lots of school students every year I look forward to summer holidays. However, when the
holiday time comes, I feel a bit disappointed as there’s nothing very exciting for me to do. I hope
that one day I could go to a far-away exotic country for my holiday. No, I don’t want to go there
as an idle tourist and spend hours on the beach! I would like to take part in some important and
exciting activity there, say, archeological digging or wild life watching or new lands exploration.
I think the ideal holiday means that you can see and learn something new and do something
useful.

Once I travelled from London to Oxford. It’s very convenient to get there by bus. The buses are
quite comfortable and you can buy a ticket when you are right on the bus. You can buy it from a
driver, it’s all right, but make sure, that you have the right coins or banknotes. It’s not polite to
keep other passengers waiting while the driver is looking for your change.
Speaker B
Today we are going to see the most ancient part of the city. The historians say that some
buildings there date back to the fifteenth century. The entrance to most museums, we are going
to visit today, is free, but we’ll have to buy tickets to get into the Central Museum of Arts. I
advise you to buy a group tour ticket as it will be cheaper per individual. We won’t have to take
buses or any other transport as this is a walking tour. The meeting point is at the reception at 10
o’clock, right after your breakfast. Do not forget your cameras...
Speaker C
Welcome
to
our
college!
We
hope
you
enjoy
studying
with
us.
On the very first day in our college you’ll get a student’s card. The card contains the most
essential information about you, such as your name, the name of the school, the course you are
taking. This card is necessary if you want to borrow some books from the college library. And it
also gives you discounts in the stationary shop, in the students’ café or if you use city buses.
Tickets for students are cheaper than for other passengers, but you need to have your card with
you. And certainly if you go somewhere by our school bus, the driver may ask you to show your
student’s card.
Speaker D
The students of our school enjoy lots of privileges. They can get free access to city libraries,
half-price bus and train tickets, discounted tickets to swimming pools, and, if necessary, they can
get a doctor’s consultation and medicines absolutely free. We also provide our students with six
free hours of internet access for free. It’s enough for educational purposes and they can write lots
of e-mails home to stay in touch with their families. However, if they want to browse the internet
for more than six hours a week or play net games too much, they’ll certainly have to pay more…
Speaker E
When you register for the exam, you need to fill in the form. Please write your first name and
your last name in block letters. Your contact information should contain your address and your
telephone number, so that we can contact you by phone. After that, you get your exam ticket –
it’s a special card where you will find your personal number, the date and time of the exam,
number of the room you need to go to, and the name of your examiner. Please, make sure that
you come on time. We don’t accept any excuses like missed buses or traffic jams.

R: Hi, your name is Sophie, isn’t it? Do you remember me?
S: Yes, I think so. I saw you at our welcome party at the college. You are a
second year student in this college, aren’t you?
R: Right, I was the guy who talked about the sports facilities in our campus.
And I bet you don’t remember my name, do you?
S: Don’t prompt. You are Rudolf…?
R: No.
S: Rupert?
R: No. But you are on the right track, my name starts with the letter R.
S: Richmond?
R: Enough, it’s not a name-game, and I’m pretty disappointed that I failed to
impress the newcomers.
S: Oh no, it’s not that!
R: It’s ok. And my name’s Raymond. Ray for friends… and for people who
can’t remember long names.
S: I-I’m sorry.
R: Never mind. Do you remember at least what I was talking about?
S: Oh, yes! You gave us lots of information about the college sports centre,
and about facilities you have here for doing sports. I’m particularly
interested in aerobics classes and in the swimming pool.
R: Yes, aerobics is very popular among girls. Aerobics classes are the
earliest ones. We run them from seven am.
S: So early?!
R: Yes, and if you want to book a more convenient time, run to the coach
right now and ask what time’s still available.
S: I will, thanks… And the swimming pool? What time does it open?
R: From half past seven. But there are not too many people in the pool
usually. Most people prefer cycling, football and basketball to swimming.
We’ve got a very good football pitch and a tennis court here.
S: You must be very good at all these sports. Where can I see you next time
– on the football pitch or in the gym-hall?
R: I’m afraid neither. I don’t go there very often.
S: Don’t you? I thought you spent all your time there.
R: Not there. I’m a computer geek, not an athlete. You are much more likely
to see me in our computer club. Browsing the internet, making web pages,
chatting in forums. See you there then.
S: Ok, see you.

Most people enjoy travelling but I don’t share their passion. The best holiday for me would be a
quiet day when I can watch some films. I hate trains and crowds in the railway stations; I’m
afraid of travelling by air; and I feel seasick when going anywhere by boat. What’s the point in
travelling, I ask? Why suffer if you can see faraway places on TV?
Speaker B
I’ve always dreamt about travelling. However, travelling is not as thrilling an adventure
nowadays as it used to be. Travellers of the past risked their lives every minute. Nowadays,
people travel with too much comfort. They can always find food and medical care. Of course,
safety and comfort are not bad things, but to me, the old way of travelling is far more attractive!
Speaker C
I like everything about travelling. I like staying in different places and visiting interesting sites.
But what attracts me most is an opportunity to meet new people. It’s really wonderful that we
can make friends with people who live right across the world. I’ve got lots of pen pals all over
the world. We keep in touch via the internet. Meeting new friends makes life more diverse and
exciting.
Speaker D
I like travelling. Once, my parents and I were travelling by ship and we were caught in a storm.
The waves were huge, and the captain insisted that all the passengers should stay in their
compartments. The storm lasted for several hours. No one was hurt but now I can understand
what travellers of the past felt when they were crossing the oceans on their little wooden ships.
Speaker E
Nowadays people travel more often than they used to. If it goes on like this, soon it will take us
almost no time at all to get from one continent to another. And I believe that travelling by air will
be safer. The flying cars will become a popular form of transport pretty soon. They’ll be ecofriendly and fast. And it will be easy to visit friends who live all across the world.

Sally: Hi, Adam! Have you heard the news? There was an accident near our
school this morning.
Adam: Oh, Sally! Was anybody injured?
Sally: Fortunately not. But three cars were seriously damaged.
Adam: Gosh!
Sally: Yes, a lorry and two small cars.
Adam: Oh!
Sally: The lorry started to slow down before the crossroads, but the driver of the Peugeot 307
didn’t notice and crashed into it. And a second later, a Mini Cooper smashed into the back of it.
Adam: Awful! And you saw it all, did you?
Sally: Yes, I did. I saw it from the bus window. I was just on my way to school when it
happened. The road was completely blocked because of the accident. I had to get off the city bus
and run to school so as not to be late for my first class.
Adam: You must have been very scared by the accident.
Sally: No, not really. It's funny, but I became more popular with my schoolmates. Everyone
wanted to talk to me to find out more details.
Adam: Hm. And why did it all happen? Slippery road, fog or rain?
Sally: No. It was nice and clear. There wasn’t much traffic on the roads. And
nobody exceeded the speed limit.
Adam: What was it then?
Sally: I think it was totally the Peugeot driver’s fault. He was talking on his mobile phone at the
time. He definitely couldn’t concentrate on driving.
Adam: Using a phone is very risky while driving. Everyone knows that.
Sally: Yeah. There are lots of things that may distract a driver. Smoking, for example, or talking
with the passengers. Even the stereo system may do harm. When you listen to loud music, it
affects how you drive. But I believe smoking while driving is the worst. The police should stop
smoking drivers and fine them.
Adam: Yeah, I agree with that. But smokers will object to your idea, I’m afraid.
Sally: Never mind. All sensible people will support it. It would reduce the number of accidents
I’m sure.
Neil: Hi, Jess! I thought about going to the movies or to the park yesterday. I called you but
nobody answered.
Jessica: Oh, sorry I missed it. It was Ronny’s birthday yesterday, and it was noisy there. I just
didn’t hear you call.
Neil: Ronny’s birthday? I didn’t know about that. Was it fun?
Jessica: Oh yes! Ronny has just come back from France. He worked there for two months. And
he talked a lot about it.
Neil: Worked in France? Why France? And what did he do there?
Jessica: He actually wanted to do a summer job to earn some pocket money. And he also wanted
to travel. And he needed to practice his French as he’s going to university in two years time.
That’s why he went there.
Neil: And what kind of job did he do? He’s not qualified for anything yet, is he? Too young.
Jessica: That’s right. But he was lucky. His family have good friends in France. And the friends
needed an au pair for a couple of months.
Neil: They needed what?
Jessica: Not what but who. They needed an au pair. Au pair is a French word for a baby sitter.
Neil: Ronny… doing babysitting! I can’t imagine that!
Jessica: Neither can I. But he said he enjoyed it. The French family have a sevenyear- old boy
and Ronny looked after him every day from 10 am till 2 pm. He taught him how to play football
and how to play chess. And he also taught him a little English. The boy was delighted.
Neil: I’m not surprised. Every kid would wish for a babysitter like Ronny. It was really fun for
the boy, I bet.
Jessica: It was. And after 2 pm Ronny was on his own. He said he made several friends there.
And they went to Paris together every weekend. Ronny is crazy about football, you know, and
once they even managed to see the French national football team playing against the Italian
national team at the Stade de France stadium outside Paris!
Neil: Wow! Now I see why he enjoyed his summer. I wouldn’t mind doing babysitting myself if
it gave me a chance to see the coolest teams and matches.

exhibits.
B: Yes. Low and high temperatures, as well as sunshine and humidity, are very harmful to them.
A:Have a look at this one. Can you read the name of the author on thatone?
Задания А1 - А6
Kelly: Hi, Jim! I didn’t see you in the morning class. Did you come late?
Jim: Hi, Kelly. Yes, I was late. Ms. Smith talked to me really seriously about that. I said that the
bus had broken down.
Kelly: And she believed that?
Jim: I don’t think so.
Kelly: And the real reason was…?
Jim: The usual. I overslept. I didn’t hear the alarm clock and woke up only when my mum
called me from her work.
Kelly: I’m not surprised. Were you watching films yesterday till very late again?
Jim: Yes. I was just going to see what was on but then I lost track of time and watched the film
up to the end.
Kelly: I tried to call you yesterday. Just wanted to remind you about the Science project we need
to complete together by tomorrow. It’s about how computers influence our life and our
communication habits.
Jim: Oh, I’d forgotten about that! How about today, after classes? Let’s go to my place and we’ll
complete the project in two or three hours I’m sure.
Kelly: I usually prefer working in the library or in a Wi-Fi café. But you’re right – there’s no
time left for it. Do you have good internet access and a printer?
Jim: I certainly do. And I also have a freshly made cake in the fridge.
Kelly: It’s a strong argument. Have you remembered that for the project we have to interview at
least three people of different ages about what they do online?
Jim: That’s not a problem. We can ask my mother, my grandmother and my younger brother,
who’s seven.
Kelly: Right. Your brother’s answers will be especially interesting. Children spend more time
online than anyone else.
Jim: True. He’s there more often than me.
Kelly: And have you got any books or journals at home from which we could get some
additional information?
Jim: No. And we don’t need to. We are writing about the Internet – we’ll certainly be able to
find everything we need right there – on the Internet.
Kelly: Ok, let’s give it a try. We have no choice anyway.
Jim: And, Kelly, I’d like to ask you a favour…
Kelly: What is it?
Jim: Could you read my French essay before I hand it in? I always make lots of spelling and
grammar mistakes in writing.
Kelly: What’s your topic?
Jim: The aim of education in the present day.
Kelly: Ok, give it to me. I’ve only got a few minutes before the bell.

Dear Patricia,
Thanks for your letter. I’m glad your birthday party was a great success! Well, in
Russia we don’t pay much attention to clothes but of course everybody wants to
look great!
Actually, any clothes will do if a person feels comfortable. As for me, I usually
wear a skirt and a smart blouse. You were quite right not to take any notice of your
friend’s clothes.
If I were you, I would have done the same. It’s not the clothes that count, after all.
By the way, what birthday presents did you get? Did your parents give you what
you wanted? What presents did you like most of all? As for me, I prefer books. I’d
better go now. Mum wants me to help with the housework. Take care and stay in
touch!
Lots of love,
Ilona
