SENIOR ASSEMBLY TERM 2 2013 Good morning students and staff. We have much to celebrate this morning and we will begin with diving where we can announce our 2013 College Diving Champions. The Intermediate Champion is Amber Schnauer. At the Auckland Champs, Amber also placed 3rd in the individuals and 2nd in the team event. The College Senior Diving Champion is Claudia Loos. At the Auckland champs, Claudia placed 3rd in the Senior Individual Girls, and 2nd with Amelia Hall in the Senior Team event. Amelia finished as runner-up to Claudia in the College Champs. With the help of some good performances in Year 7 & 8, the St Cuthbert’s team placed 2nd overall at the Auckland Secondary Schools Champs. To orienteering, which continues to produce impressive results. At the Auckland Secondary School Championship, Kayla Fairbairn placed 2nd in the Senior Girls on the Championship course (remembering that she is still a Y11), and at the North Island SS champs, she placed 2nd in the Senior Girls sprint and 3rd in the Long Distance event. In team events, Kayla teamed up with Kate Salmon and Ella Walmsley to win the Senior Girls at the Auckland champs, and they also placed 3rd in the Senior Girls relay at the North Island champs. Kayla and Kate were also selected into the Auckland Secondary School senior team. Ella and Rebecca Calderon (in only her first full team of racing) were selected into the Intermediate team, and Rebecca also won the Auckland Championship Intermediate Girls over the Standard course. Well done to the orienteerers! Brooke Hamilton has been a high-achieving golfer for some years now, and that has continued this year. Brooke competed in the Auckland Secondary Schools Stroke Play Championships at the North Shore Golf Club. Brooke played really well finishing tied equal 1st on a score of 76, but on count-back was finally placed in 2nd equal. Brooke has also won the Kaimai Women’s Classic, shooting just 3 over par over 36 holes. Turning to Equestrian, and congratulations to Steph Fankhauser who placed 2nd in the pre-novice Section D at the Kihikihi International horse trial riding Midnight Cappuccino. In Gymnastics, congratulations go to Isobel Ryan who has had a great term. Isobel won the gold medal in the Step 7 grade at the ARGOS gymsport Artistic competition, which is a competition for gymnasts from across the northern half of the North Island. Isobel has also placed 1st overall in the Level 5 Artistic event at the Auckland Secondary Schools competition, winning the beam and the floor exercises. Cross-country running has had a fantastic term, and none more so than Audrey Gregan. Unfortunayely, Audrey is away in Germany preparing for the World Youth Track & Field Champs. Audrey was a member of the winning senior 3person team at Auckland Champs, at which her team members were Charlotte Jackson and Alex Beggs. Sophie Rees placed 2nd in the Intermediate Girls at Central Zone and 6th at Auckland Champs. In the intermediate team event at Auckland Champs, Sophie was joined by Tessa Wylie and Gabriele Hawkins (absent today) to win the 3 person Intermediate event. And the 6 person event was also won by St Cuthbert’s, the team being these 3 plus Rose Fitzgerald, Kayla Fairbairn and Kate Ivory. Tessa, Gabriele and Kate then travelled to Christchurch where they won the National title for the Junior 3 person event, and were joined by Devon Lowyim, Samantha Moriarty and Rose Fitzgerald to place 2nd in the 6 person event. Well done to all of our fantastic cross country runners. Our Premier Water Polo team competed strongly in the Auckland Secondary Schools competition in Term 1. The team ended up placing in 3rd place. The team was Antonia Young, Tate Renata, Meg Gosnell, May Allen, Annie Strachan, Bella Crossan, Rosa Clark, Kelsey Snelgar, Cecilia La Cava, Tara O’Connor, Charlotte Valentine (absent), Laura Storey and Eve Dixon. Turning to swimming now. At the Auckland Secondary Schools Aquathon (which is a run-swim-run event), Ruby George placed 3rd in the Junior Girls Individual grade. Ruby also competed at the Auckland Secondary School’s Champion of Champions, where St Cuthbert’s achieved some great results. Ruby teamed up with Emily Borich, Antonia Young and Tara O’Connor to place 2nd in the Girls 13 & under 200m Breaststroke relay. Emily and Antonia teamed up with Sarah Hamilton and Emily Grant to place 2nd in the Girls 13 & Under 200m Medlet relay. Georgia Zacest placed 1st in the Girls 14-15 50m Freestyle. Georgia teamed up with Georgia Marris (absent), Jessica Retter and Olivia Marris to place 3rd in the Open Girls 200m Butterfly relay, Mary Tate placed 2nd in the Girls 14-15 50m Breaststroke. And well done to the following senior teams who are currently placing 1st or 2nd in their respective grades: Currently in 1st place in their grade: In netball: Senior 8; Year 10 Team 6 And In hockey: 2nd XI; U15 Team 3 The Basketball Soul team (our top Open team); U17 team And placing in 2nd place: In netball: Senior 4; Senior 9; Senior 11; Year 9 Team 1 In hockey: 1st XI, 4th XI In Football: Junior A And the Table Tennis team We will finally acknowledge some of our students who have been selected in representative teams recently. Football – Holly Luxton and Tayla Curry have been selected for the National Training Centre squad. The following have all made Regional selection teams: Franklin area team DC section (14-16 year old) – Georgina Llewellyn, competing at National Champs in Hawkes Bay. The following players have been selected for Auckland netball teams, and will be playing in a week-long tournament in the July school holidays Nina-Tai Roberts (absent) – Year 9 Team 1 Annie Strachan Under 17 Team 3 Tinei Nua (absent) Under 17 Team 3 Jessica Retter Under 17 Team 3 Victoria Lowe Under 17 Team 3 Shantelle Peters Under 19 Team 2 And moving on to National Selections: Kayaking – Rochelle Austin (absent in Kahanui) has been selected to represent New Zealand at the World Kayak Marathon Champs in Denmark in September, paddling in the U18 K2 race. Water Polo – Antonia Young and Tate Renata were selected to play for New Zealand U15 water polo at the World Youth Games in Canberra in July.
