Youth In Philanthropy 2014 Guidelines for Grant Applicants Who We Are The Community Foundation of the Rappahannock River Region works with individuals and families to create permanent gifts for our community. We are a regionally-focused grantmaking organization serving the counties of Caroline, King George, Stafford, Spotsylvania and the City of Fredericksburg. Across the country, community foundations like ours have created programs to harness the insight, energy and compassion of youth to benefit local programs. Following proven models, the Community Foundation began a Youth in Philanthropy (YIP) program in 2005. Now entering our twelfth funding cycle, this program encourages student leadership, volunteerism and community giving by engaging young people in decision-making about the distribution of grant dollars. Youth in Philanthropy began with six high school students and has grown to forty participants for the current cycle. Mentored by adults and led by an insightful group of high school seniors, YIP offers young adults a unique and challenging leadership experience. The members, comprised of 10th, 11th and 12th graders, are responsible for understanding the types of community needs that exist in our Planning District, preparing and disseminating a Request for Proposal, reviewing grant applications, and making funding recommendations to The Community Foundation’s Board of Governors. What We Do YIP provides grant funding opportunities once a year to benefit projects that are led by youth, that actively involve youth in their implementation, or which directly serve or benefit youth. YIP encourages volunteerism and leadership among area young people by providing hands-on opportunities for them to learn the grantmaking, grantseeking and grant awarding processes. Youth are encouraged to try their hand at grantmaking. Who Is Eligible? Any project based in Caroline, King George, Stafford, or Spotsylvania Counties or the City of Fredericksburg is eligible for program funding if it fulfills one of YIP’s three requirements. These three requirements are: 1. 2. 3. Youth must be involved in the development of the program. Youth must be involved in the execution of the program. Youth must be served by the program. Document1 Page 1 of 8 “Youth” is defined as any school-aged person up to and including undergraduate students.
