Report for HHHC9301 Kemahiran Pengurusan Maklumat Dan Pembelajaran Sepanjang Hayat The project done is the 18th First Aids Competition (PPC: Pertandingan Pertolongan Cemas Ke-18 Sesi 2014/2015) which is organized by Red Crescent Society of UKM, Bangi. The JPPel code for this project is DN00043/2015. It is a two-day event held in 7th and 8th of March 2015. The competition is conducted in Anuwar Mahmud Hall, FST and Gemilang hall of UKM, Bangi. The objectives of the event are to improve the knowledge of first aids, to ensure the unity among members and lastly, to motivate the members in obtaining first aids knowledge. This event is partipated by the university students of all colleges in UKM, where KTSN has sent 12 participants participating in this. PPC comprises five categories; they are Marching Competition, Bandaging Relay and Immobilisation, Quiz Bee Competition, Community Base Scenario Competition and Classical Team Test Competition. On the first day, the categories carried out are Quiz Bee Competition, Bandaging Relay and Immobilisation and Classical Team Test. On the following day, Marching Competition and Community Based Scenario Competition are carried out. I was one of the trainers for this competition. My job is to teach and educate the 12 participants of KTSN with the knowledge of first aids. Throughout the whole event, there were several problems we encountered. One of them was a lack of time for adequate training. Therefore, to solve this problem, we had long intensive training every night after class and it needed scarification as well as full commitment and persistence. Besides, the trainers are students from different faculties, and hence, it was difficult to arrange time to plan our training sessions for the participants together, yet we got to overcome by giving entire and continuous commitment to ensure the smoothness of process. There was also a lack of experience in us compared to the trainers from other residential colleges as we did not hire an experienced BSMM trainer to train for the competition, but we managed to overcome this problem by consistently learning ourselves from first aids manual and from each other. Also, we searched for information from different sources on our own as well as getting help from seniors. We were also unaware of the scheme of competition and rules and regulation as they had made some changes, we solved that by avoiding last-minute work and by making everything clear earlier from the organizer in Bangi main campus. This is to ensure that our participants can perform well during the competition without breaking any rule and regulation of the competition. We calmly solved them one by one by teaching them what we had been told. Information Management and Life Long Learning Throughout this event, besides from teaching the participants, I also get to understand the basic first aids even more. Basic first aids knowledge is something that we have to apply consistently and is useful in our daily life, we might get to use it anytime when any unexpected accident happens. While treating patients, we ought to reassure them all the time to make sure that their anxiety is receded and to ensure that they are still staying conscious. In reassurance, I learn to communicate with people from different family background and age groups; this is something that is important to us throughout our life as words can be soothing and change people in some sorts of ways. Not only communication skills, but other skills like social skills, sense of responsibility, innovative skills can also be learnt throughout this whole event and undeniably, these are the skills that matter for a lifetime. I am now able to explore more issues or problems which have to be solved by own effort. There are several mistakes done during the trainings and I always refer to First Aids Manual to acknowledge myself the correct and appropriate method of treating the casualties. Not only that, I always search any possible and rare symptoms which might be found in patient suffering from diseases like malaria, AIDS, cholera etc. so that I can as well diagnose the disease more precisely. Undoubtedly, I get to learn applying the information that I searched and studied into the scenes more wisely. First aid is not merely about learning but it is important as well to be able to apply in our daily life when we encounter people with injuries. It is important, too to choose sources with quality and to selectively use information that is sufficiently supportive. This is to prevent that we will not be acknowledged by fake information, causing us to treat the patients wrongly. It is a responsibility for a first aider to give proper and correct treatment to patients, so I learn to be extra aware of the sources which I search on the web. Not only that, I have learnt to compile the information searched by my team mates and arrange them accordingly to ensure an easier understanding when we study them all over again. Well-arranged information can ensure a faster and convenient learning process. During the competition, we are given questions which have both direct and indirect meaning and hence, I get to learn to identify both direct and indirect meanings and am able to solve the questions with precise and accurate answers or method so the casualties receive a proper treatment that will not further worsen their current condition. Also, to give treatment to the casualties, I have learnt to be able to evaluate better and make decision according to the information that I have read or searched. This is important as there are diseases which have common symptoms, by evaluating them, I can diagnose a disease more precisely. Outcome and Implication The skills that we got to learn are information management and lifelong learning. These two skills play a great role in order for me to serve the community better. I always make sure that things I learn from either First Aid Manual or website are true and appropriate. I managed to teach the participants with the proper way of approaching patients with diseases. I also make sure the participants knew about the patients are from different family backgrounds and hence, different ways of communication ought to be applied so that they are willing to listen to our words and to attend themselves to hospital for proper treatment. This in turn gives me implication that will matter for a lifetime. During the training session I always told them as a first aider, we should be ready at all times to serve the community as it is our responsibility. First aiders are the ones who are responsible to reduce the pain that might be suffered by casualties. Not only that, we ought to make sure that the condition of the casualties is stable and not deteriorating. Through this, I learnt to treat the community like treating my own family, it is important to express empathy to people that need our help, understanding the situation and to carry out the responsibility as a first aider. This proves that first aids are something that needs consistent and persistent learning in our whole life. Besides, university students like us will be soon stepping into the society. Through this event, students get to improve further in many factors that need a lifelong learning and proper information management. This whole event was not only about applying our first aids knowledge onto various cases, but also to reassure the casualties to soothe their anxiety as well as educate them with proper information. Conclusion I have never regret for participating as a trainer in this event as I have gained a lot of knowledge more than I was a participant and experiences which cannot be learnt merely in my studies. Now, I am confident in treating people that needs my help. I get to apply all of the first aids knowledge that I gained in my daily life. Also, from this event, I am aware of the correct way of using medical equipment like inhaler (asthmatic patients) and Aspirin (heart attack sufferer) and over dosage of medications can cause even severe conditions. Apart from that, I get to nurture my soft skills further. As in the field that I am in, the health care field, it is utterly important to know ways to socialize with people from every background, to give advice and to educate the people based on what I study. Also, it is vital as well for me to have a deep sense of responsibility in carrying out clinical procedures and treating patients. As a health care professional, we ought to be responsible to our patients by educating them and giving them proper treatment. These skills undoubtedly need determination in learning throughout our life. Discussion was made among trainers, we always discuss among each other in managing the ideas and information from every one of us to come out with a more precise and accurate way to conduct our training session with the 12 participants. Along the discussion, we also learnt and to make sure that the information we got from internet is precise for Bandaging Relay and Team Test Competition.
