Closing or Delaying School for Inclement Weather As we near the winter months in northeast Pennsylvania, I wanted to make you aware of the process I use to determine whether or not to delay or close our schools. As with any decision that is made, I look to the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and families. As like everyone else, I will monitor local TV, radio, and internet weather models to see the likelihood of an approaching storm. If bad weather is predicted to arrive in the evening or overnight, I will begin to make my phone calls around 4:00 am. I am in contact with our Maintenance Supervisor as well as our local bus contractors, some of whom give me reports as they are travelling to their bus garages. I’m also in contact with the other Carbon County Superintendents and the Director of CCTI. Finally, I make a call to our local PennDot County Maintenance Manager for an update on the roads. All of these calls are made up until about 5:15am, where I will then make a final decision. Once a decision has been made, our administrative team will then use various methods to get the word out to everyone. These methods include: our Alert Now Message System, posting on WNEP and WBRE, our Twitter page, and also our website (www.weatherlysd.org). Should there be inclement weather during school hours, we will use the same communications to get the word out to everyone. Please remember, it is the responsibility of parents and guardians to make arrangements for the care of your children in the event we need to close or delay our schools for weather or emergency situations. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. Think Spring!! Sincerely, Thomas McLaughlin Superintendent
