The Samfund was founded in 2003 by Samantha Watson, a two-time young adult cancer survivor. It is the first and largest nonprofit organization in the United States to focus solely on addressing the financial implications of a cancer diagnosis on young adults and provide direct support to individuals, regardless of where they live or their specific cancer diagnosis The Samfund is a lean organization, with five full-time staff members, an 11-member Board of Trustees and an extensive volunteer network (including many past grant recipients). Quick facts: • • • Each year, more than 70,000 young adults are diagnosed with cancer in the U.S. Rising costs of living and healthcare – in addition to ongoing and residual medical bills and co-pays, depleted savings accounts and lack of support – make it almost impossible for young adults to regain their financial independence after cancer. The Samfund is designed specifically to support young adults in their 20s and 30s as they get back on their feet after treatment, by providing: o Free online support and education through the “Moving Forward With Your Financial Health” Webinar series and Finances 101 toolkit program o Online community (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, blog) o Direct financial assistance ($1.5M awarded to 650+ recipients since 2005) For more information, please contact: Samantha Watson, Founder and CEO sam@thesamfund.org 617-938-3484 89 South Street, Suite LL02 Boston, MA 02111 www.thesamfund.org Tax ID: 20-6018710
