Eli Whitney Museum will open a celebration: The Erector Set at 100,
Hamden, Connecticut
One hundred years ago, a 29 year old brought a product to market that would become an American icon and
redefine the Holiday Season. Thanks to a grant from the Connecticut Humanities as part of its year-long CT at
Work initiative, the Eli Whitney Museum will open a celebration: The Erector Set at 100. The exhibition features a
timeline of the Erector Set’s evolution and connections to major events of the 20th century. There are Erector Sets
with familiar and unfamiliar pieces and samples of advertising that show Gilbert as one of the early masters of
brand management. There are motors pulleys and gears. Visitors can try their hand at mastering movement. There
are nuts and bolts and girders for visitors to construct a Gilbert box girder to contribute to a skyscraper that will
climb 25 feet over the course of the exhibition. There is a practical beauty in this toy that still works a half-century
past its most glorious days. Both exhibits are on display through January 26th, 2014. Admission free; donations are
welcome.

Annual Event Date: last weekend in August
Bodega Seafood, Art & Wine Festival
It may be held on a rough and tumble ranch, but don’t be fooled by its bucolic surroundings. The Bodega Seafood,
Art & Wine Festival, held the last weekend in August each year, is no country bumpkin event. Despite its rural digs
this festival aims to provide a top quality experience for attendees. The festival draws top quality artisans from all
over the country. The Festival offers a plethora of unique food items. The Wine and Microbrewed Beer Tasting is a
huge draw and each year brings in approximately 45 companies from all over northern California. It is the
entertainment, however, which really makes this festival rock.
