Summer Research Internships 2015
We are delighted to announce that current second year students studying in the Faculty of Business can now apply
for the Summer Research Internships Scheme. Excitingly this year there are 16 internships available; these have
been made possible via the very generous support of our alumni Footsteps and Q-steps project funding.
This internship scheme provides a great opportunity for Undergraduate students and Leading academics/research
staff within social sciences faculties to benefit from collaboration on a live research project hosted within one of four
Faculties: Arts, Business, Environment or Education, Social Sciences and Law.
Chosen candidates will work under the supervision of a research leader.
Each internship is of 5-weeks duration starting with a compulsory SPSS training ‘bootcamp’ on 6th-10th July 2015
The training course is designed not only to promote networking and raise self-confidence but also to help with
getting a head start on the skills required to complete a quantitative research project - including advanced statistical
analysis to help with understanding data, identifying trends in data and producing accurate forecasts.
Chosen candidates will also benefit by:
 Working under the supervision of a research leader
 Gaining a valuable insight into the quantitative research process and developing key research skills and potential
 Developing self-leadership and mini-project management skills
 Reflecting on the value of their contribution and writing their research up
 Receiving a salary of £1,200
At the end of the internship, and as a condition of payment, you will be required to submit a reflective report of at
least 500 words. This is your opportunity to provide feedback on your experiences. Once your reflective report has
been received you will be paid the internship salary of £1,200 and issued with a completion certificate signed by your
project supervisor.
Previous summer research students have subsequently been chosen to represent their Faculty/School and University
as a Student Ambassador. Indeed several candidates have been invited to present their research findings at events
such as the Annual British Conference on Undergraduate Research Conference and preview event at the University
of Leeds and even to present a poster of their research work to Members of Parliament other undergraduate
research students and their supervisors from across the UK at the Houses of Parliament.
