Alumni Awards and Recognition Programs
Outstanding Chapter Advisor Award
The Outstanding Chapter Advisor Award, first presented in 1996, recognizes the preeminent contributions by a
faculty advisor to a collegiate Chapter. The advisor plays a pivot role in guiding but not overwhelming the collegiate
Brothers, as they grow individually and collectively in organizational skills, leadership ability, and personal
competence. It is well understood that the Chapter Advisor is one of the most critical positions of a collegiate
Chapter. The Chapter Advisor tends to change less frequently and can provide stability and support as individuals
enter and pass through the collegiate portion of the “Fraternal Continuum”. The advisor’s role is more of a
“shepherd” or facilitator who provides continuity, guidance, and experience to the collegiate leaders and the Brothers
at large. Recognizing the significant role performed by Chapter Advisors and the importance of the continuity, which
they provide our Chapters, the Executive Council has established this annual recognition.
Chapters choosing to nominate their advisor must craft a two-page nomination submitted by the Chapter. The
judging panel consists of the most recent recipient, two Regional Directors (one Alumni and one Collegiate), one
Regional Correspondent, and one Grand Officer. To the extent possible, the judging panel will consist of officers
from those Chapters who have not nominated candidates for the award. The most recent recipient is considered
ineligible for the award. The Phi Delta Chi Outstanding Chapter Advisor Award recipient is recognized at awards
banquet of either Grand Council or the Leader Development Seminar.
Outstanding Chapter Alumni Award
The strength of Phi Delta Chi, both in terms of its reputation and its financial resources, depends on in its alumni.
First presented in 1986, the Outstanding Alumni Chapter Award serves to reinforce this premise through the
recognition of outstanding alumni Chapters. This award recognizes the dedicated alumni Brothers who entered the
profession and now provide role models, leadership, energy, and resources for our profession of pharmacy.
The Outstanding Alumni Chapter Award is awarded to a Chapter selected among those Chapters participating in the
Alumni Chapter Foundations Program (ACFP). The ACFP is a program established to mirror the Collegiate
Achievement Award Program. It consists of four quarterly reports. All alumni Chapters who meet the following
criteria are recognized as “fully functioning Chapters”:
1. Hold at least one business meeting
2. Publish at least one newsletter
3. Submit all four reports outlined in the ACFP
The Outstanding Alumni Chapter Award criteria are the individual questions and submission requests comprising the
Alumni Chapter Foundations Program itself. These items have corresponding point values associated with them.
The Chapter with the highest number of points wins the award. The award recognizes objective expectations
designed to reward the Chapter that is the most organized, communicative, and supportive of the Fraternity. The two
Chapters with the next highest totals will be recognized as runners-up. The award winner receives a plaque.
Albert B. Prescott / Glaxo Smithkline Pharmacy Leadership Award
The Albert B. Prescott / Glaxo SmithKline Pharmacy Leadership Award, first presented in 1987, is given annually to a
pharmacist no more than 10 years into his or her career. The recipient shall have demonstrated exemplary
leadership qualities as a student and new practitioner indicative of someone likely to emerge as a major leader in
pharmacy over the course of his or her career.
Albert B. Prescott was a maverick in the late 1800s because of his advocacy for an academic basis for
pharmaceutical education. Founder and Dean of the College of Pharmacy at the University of Michigan, Prescott
nurtured his idea for nearly 25 years before the rest of the profession caught up with him. This chemist, educator,
and leader of pharmacists was instrumental in the founding of Phi Delta Chi at the University of Michigan in 1883. He
served as advisor to the Alpha Chapter and was the first honorary Brother of the fraternity.
This award is open to anyone in the profession of pharmacy and is not limited to Brothers of Phi Delta Chi. The
recipient is selected by the four most recent recipients of the award, two Brothers of the Phi Delta Chi Board of
Counselors, and a representative from the Pharmacy Leadership and Education Institute. The Award is presented
annually during the APhA Annual Meeting, at which time the recipient delivers a scholarly lecture on issues such as
pharmacy as a profession, leadership, or future trends in pharmacy practice or education. The lecture is converted
into a text suitable for publication in the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association. The winner receives a
framed print of Albert B. Prescott with his students and an honorarium funded by a generous grant from Glaxo
SmithKline.
