Undergraduate Education - Teaching Opportunities
With the expansion of the UBC Medical School, there are now more opportunities for Clinical Faculty to teach or be involved in activities


Each of these sites has a Discipline Specific Site Leader (DSSL) or Psychiatry Lead

If you are near one of these sites, contact the site leader through Shilpa Samji (shilpa.samji@ubc.ca) on how you might participate
2. Seminar facilitation

The rotation for Psychiatry is six weeks and students participate in several seminars during that time

This varies site to site for duration, topics and frequency
3. Case development

The Psychiatry Undergraduate Program welcomes the contribution of new case write-ups from clinical faculty for learning and examination
purposes

Education and testing Case presentations follow a particular format

This takes, on average, two hours for write-up and correspondence
4. Year 3 Electives

Students have a two-week block that is designated as Elective

During this time, students organize an activity that may be non-clinical, (Literature Review, Research Project, attending a conference, study
time, developing case-studies, volunteering), clinical placement, or may be innovative and not directly clinical (e.g. preparing a glossary of
medical terms in Arabic or Chinese, doing a literature search)

If you are at a Year 3 or 4 designated site, you may not be able to take on a student in this capacity because scheduling is done through the
Dean’s Office, the UG Office and through one45. ALL clinical electives requests (regardless of the hospital site) must go through the UBC
Departments. The Departmental contact list for Year 3 electives is found on MEDICOL under the Year 3 electives tab. ALL clinical elective
inquires for Vancouver Island (IMP), Northern Region (NMP) or Southern Interior Region (SMP) must go through the Program Site Office. For
the IMP, please contact Luisa Halsall at lhalsall@uvic.ca. For NMP, contact Louise Belcher at belcherl@unbc.ca and for the SMP, please contact
Doreen Welsh at dorren.welsh@interiorhealth.ca.

If you are not at a current teaching site, this is a perfect opportunity!

Time commitment varies with the objectives and activities

Year 4
1. Electives

Senior medical students may choose to do a two- to four-week block in an area of Psychiatry that will clarify or augment
their career goals

Both clinical and non-clinical electives are possible

Development needs to be in conjunction with Dr. Chan

Descriptions of current offerings are available

Development forms are available

Please do not do this with a particular student because the choices go through an automated matching process (one45)

We do have adequate placements for the demand at this time

New options, especially at distributed sites, are welcome but student uptake is not guaranteed

Time commitment varies with the objectives and activities

Payment is available for UBC student placements with the exception of those from affiliated institutions. At present this
includes students from Peking University, Fudan University, Zhejiang University, Hong Kong University and Lund
University.

2. Examinations

In Year 4, students perform a multi-station, clinical exam that employs standardized patients (OSCE). This is held on
several weekends: February through June—either or both Saturday and Sunday, either or both morning and afternoon
sessions. Generally examiners are matched with their disciplines.

PGY2 residents and above are welcome to help with either.
