Module Code ARC3003 Academic year 2009/0 Module level 3 Module Title Professional Placement Lecturer(s) Credit Value 30.00 ECTS Value 15.00 Pre-requisites 90 Archaeology credits at level 2 Co-requisites Duration of Module 2 terms Total Student Study 300 hours 6 weeks full-time work or equivalent Time hours part-time (240 hours) and production of assignments (60 hours). Aims This module will give experience of professional archaeological practice, requiring the deployment, in the work-place, of skills and knowledge acquired at stages 1 and 2. Intended Learning Outcomes ? know the methodological framework of the project in hand. ? learn the appropriate professional procedures and etiquette of the professional organisation. ? know and deploy terms and conventions in their correct contexts ? understand the ethical issues involved Module-specific skills: ? interact with professional archaeologists and others ? apply appropriate archaeological skills within the contemporary professional workplace Discipline-specific skills: ? accept responsibility for a project, clarifying the task and implementing it under guidance ? produce a project report using appropriate illustrations and diagrams Personal and key skills: ? time management in a workplace environment ? team work Learning/Teaching Methods seminars (3); tutorials (2); work experience (6 weeks) Assignments Will vary in form according to the work undertaken A project report, tailored to the demands of the individual project, with parameters set by the employing body. Given the variability of the employerled projects, no word limit is set. A work diary A critical evaluation of the project and its outcomes. Formative feedback will be given in tutorials during the course of the module. Assessment Written assignment of 3000 words (worth 80%): to comprise the project report, work diary and critical evaluation, designed to illustrate the nature and range of skills deployed, the degree of success achieved and the ability to analyse own performance. Given the variability of the employer-led projects, no word limit is set. An employer?s reference (worth 20%) designed to indicate levels of competence and ability to undertake professional archaeological work. (A pro-forma and grading scheme are provided for the guidance of the referee).
