COAST GUARD INVESTIGATIVE ASSOCIATION SPRING – 2012 NEWSLETTER President’s Message Greetings and I hope this finds you doing well! The 2012 CGIA Reunion is scheduled for 18-21 September in Phoenix, Arizona. To date planning and working with the hotel are on schedule, thanks to Gus Oviedo! Our scheduled Guest Speaker is CDR Mike Bennett, USCG, a published author of many books regarding Coast Guard history. He is a much sought-after speaker. As a side bar, CDR Bennett is assisting Jack Pressler with his research on the history of CGI/CGIS. . Additionally, we are expecting a WWII Medal of Honor recipient to attend our meeting/dinner and perhaps share some of his experiences. He is the Father in Law of our Executive Secretary, Jeff Kilpatrick. Although Admiral Costello has indicated he would love to attend, unfortunately he is involved in a Change of Command around the time of our meeting. He is being reassigned from Commander, Eleventh Coast Guard District to Deputy Commander, Pacific Area. Congratulations to him on his new assignment. This year is also the time to elect the new leadership for CGIA. I am Acting Chair of the Election Committee and expect to mail out the election ballots around the first week in June. If you do not receive one by end of June please contact me and I will see that you get one. Ballots will remain sealed until the Reunion Business Meeting on 19 September. I cannot over emphasize the importance attached to this election! If you have questions or need clarification regarding this election, please contact me! Also please contact me if you are interested in running for one of the CGIA elected officer position (President, Vice-President, Executive Secretary or Treasurer), or wish to nominate a member for one of these positions. If you're considering running for office don't hesitate to contact members currently holding the position(s) for a position responsibilities briefing. I am looking forward to our meeting in Phoenix this September and visiting with the members and guests that can attend. Fraternally, Howard Giblin, President, CGIA Vice President’s Message Treasurer's Corner I hope everyone has had a great year. We have come a long way since our meeting in Charleston. I’m looking forward to seeing as many of our members as possible in Phoenix in September. This is an election year and we have a lot of other business to be conducted. We need your input to make it successful. Hello! I hope this finds all of you doing very well! We now have a web page, http://www.coastguardinvestigativeassociati on.org , compliments of Ken Brandal. He has done an excellent job in putting this together and I personally want to commend him for his efforts. If you haven’t checked it out yet you need to do so. Please send your check or money order for dues made out to "CGIA" to me at 4465 Westmont Blvd., Copley, OH 44321-1229. Questions: Please contact me at (330) 8071754 or via email at jdpressler@gmail.com. And, of course, you may prefer to opt for CGIA Lifetime Membership rather than submitting dues annually. If you are interested, please contact me. Woodie Clookie provided me with contact information for NCISA, our counterpart. I spoke with Blair Gluba, President, and picked his brain on their organization. He sent me a copy of their magazine and put me on their email list. I am receiving a lot of good information about world events, job opportunities, etc. I asked about sharing some of that information with our members and he said that could be done. I noted in their emails that they send birthday greetings and death notices and encourage members to stay in contact and support one another through this means. I would like for us to do something similar, but we need to have everyone’s support in using their addresses and email addresses. Hopefully, we can discuss this in Phoenix and get it started. This would be a good way to stay in touch. See you in Phoenix… Don With the upcoming 2012 Conference in Phoenix, AZ from 18-21 September, annual dues of $17.50 become a very important part of our ability to "pay the bills". If you have yet to pay your dues for 2012, please do so no later than 31 July. Jack Pressler CGIA Treasurer EXECUTIVE SECRETARY REPORT Greetings from hot and sunny central Florida where the snow birds and other less hardy folks have left as we settle into the hot and humid dog days of summer. These hot and humid afternoons are the perfect opportunity to do indoor projects. Reserve CGI Agents. Let’s work on recruiting each and every one of them to join us in Arizona. May God bless each of you and your families and I look forward to seeing everyone in Arizona later this year. Your slightly off-center and perpetually optimistic secretary. By this time all of the members should have received their plastic membership card. If you have not received your plastic membership card or if you no longer know the location of your card (notice I didn’t suggest anyone night have lost their card) send me an email jhkcgret@comcast.net and I will make you a new one. Please make certain you include your name and current mailing address. Jeff Kilpatrick One of my duties as the secretary of your organization is keeping the membership list current and up to date. In an effort to accomplish this task, I really need your help. When you move, when your telephone number changes or when you get a new email account, please let me know. Once again, updates and changes to your membership can be accomplished by sending me a quick email. If you don’t have email or if you prefer other methods of communication, you can either send me a note with your updates via snail mail to 549 Lake Drive, Ocala, FL, 34472-5050 or you can call me on my cell phone 352-239-0491. Editor’s Note: If memory serves me correctly, Mike was involved in planning my “going away” luncheon when I transferred from CCGDONE(oil) to CGI R/A New London in 1976. If his outstanding planning skills are still in place, we’ll have a good time, narrowly miss General Court Martial action, avoid international incidents involving monarchs by a slim margin, and generally have a good time. I would like to challenge each of you, to enlist a new member between now and the Conference in Arizona. We as members of this organization need to be the salesmen for our organization. During my time in CGIS, on the west coast, there were a lot of Regional News Mike Ferrick, Northeast Regional Director advises that planning is underway for the 2013 reunion. By our Phoenix Reunion this September, we'll have a specific location locked in -- those attending will be the first to know! Stay tuned for more. But none have been more provocative than the works of Dr. Ivan Panin (DEC 1855-OCT 1942), about whose work we explored in Part 1 of this writer's 'investigative study' of Biblical Scripture. In 1890 he discovered some of the phenomenal mathematical designs underlying both the Greek text of the New Testament and the Hebrew text of the Old Testament. The recurrence of the number 7 -- or an exact multiple of 7 -- is found throughout the Bible and is widely recognized. The Sabbath on the 7th day; the 7 years of plenty and the 7 years of famine in Egypt; the 7 priests and the 7 trumpets marching around Jerico for 7 days; the Sabbath Year of the land; Solomon's building of the Temple in 7 years; Naaman's washing in the river 7 times; the 7 churches & 7 lamp stands, 7 seals, 7 trumpets, 7 bowls, 7 stars, & so on in the Book of Revelation, all show the consistent use of the number 7. There are scores of such examples which show up on the 'surface' of Scripture, and always appear to be significant. Furthermore, careful students have often been amazed to find this number always appearing in unexpected ways. But (as we saw in Part 1) an example of Jesus' genealogy in the first 17 verses of the Book of Matthew, there turns out to be MUCH more BELOW the surface. An even more riveting feature remains: The number of words found in Matthew, NOT found in any other New Testament Book, displays an elaborate numeric design. HOW did Matthew know that he had used words that would NOT be used in any of the other 26 N/T books? He would have to have before him ALL the other 25 books, and would have had to have written his LAST. It so happens, however, that EACH of the other books shows the same phenomena! Which poses a 'curious' and improbable proposition: Did each writer write LAST? IF not, then is each writer a mind-reader as well as a literary and mathematical artist never equaled and hardly even conceivable! Panin proceeded to prove by numerics that every book in our Bible carries such features, that each one is necessary to cause the numerical scheme of the entire Bible to work out correct and that nothing can be added or subtracted from the Bible (as we have it) without spoiling these features. From the first verse of Genesis to the last verse of Revelation these divine evidences are found. These are not only intriguing to discover, they also demonstrate an intricacy of design which testifies to a supernatural origin! Some 40 authors/writers over thousands of years penned the Bible, but the TRUE author (operating outside of time & space) has placed His imprimatur on the total volume of work. . We must remember, however, that Panin's work deals NOT with "translations" but Hebrew & Greek. One is foolish who attempts to maintain THIS verbal ‘inspiration’ applied to ANY modern version of Scripture (although this writer prefers the KJV) as translation difficulties have been tremendous and the constant hanging of attempts at 'modern speech' have rendered something far different from the "original." Also, HOW, one might ask, did Panin get back to 'reliable' originals? The answer is that the comparison of hundreds of manuscripts over 50 years showed eventually a uniformity that proved a common source. We are indebted to the painstaking examinations and lifetime commitment of Dr. Ivan Panin for uncovering these amazing insights. Org Web Site Hello, I'm Ken Brandal, the webmaster for the CGIA Web Site. I'm adding this article to the Newsletter sort of as a redundancy posting. I developed the site as a way to better establish communication with our memberships, and also to act as an archive location for Organization related items i.e: photos, newsletters, reunion minutes, memberships lists, etc. so that you don't have to keep your own hard copies. They should always be available on line and you won't have to go searching for them somewhere in the house. Just click, read/view, and print if needed. The Website helps get the word out quickly and if members use it we can save monies on not having to mail items in the snail mail. Forms for registration, membership, apparel, comments, survey can be available on line where they can be filled out and mailed, and in some cases sent via e-mail. Don Roark assists me greatly by making the forms in PDF professional format for posting and use. Just like the newsletter editor, I am always looking for something to add to the site. I have room for additional pages if anyone has a suggestion for one. Maybe a “do you remember when” page where posts could be made of maybe some memorable events that took place, or when maybe something funny happened in an office or to an agent they would be good to share. If you have any photos of anything Organization related, or of agents doing their job, that might be interesting to members send to me for posting. Even if a hard copy as I can scan and post then return. On the membership page I will gladly post the obituary notices of former and current members or anyone who was connected with “oil or GOIS”, if I am notified. Just use the comment form on the WEB SITE home page. I just need to know the name if a member and Town where they lived if not a member. With today’s computer world I can get most obituaries on line. When you visit the web site you will see some missing items, newsletters, reunion minutes, and photos. If you have any of these and could provide them I would like to have the missing items. If you have them in hard copy send and I will scan, post and return. I am looking forward to seeing everyone in Phoenix and I will have a special “gift” for everyone who attends. And I might be politicking to get next year’s Reunion in Colonial Williamsburg, Va. If you are unable to get to Phoenix and would like to see next year’s Reunion in Williamsburg, let your area rep know or send me a e-mail (kenbpoq@yahoo.com) with your vote. FROM THE EDITOR I hope this finds you all well. After the publication of the Fall 2011 Newsletter via e-mail and snail mail, considering the cost, combined with the creation of the CGIA Website, the leadership decided to have this edition of the newsletter published within the web-site. This will help keep down mailing and printing costs (thus keeping dues to a minimum) and avoid people having to download large files. Let’s hope this works! I’ve signed up for the Phoenix reunion and I hope as many of you as possible can make it out there. For the organization to truly represent the desires of the membership, we need to have good representation from across the board. However, if you just can’t make it, I urge you to contact your regional director and share your views so your voice is heard. If you’ll recall, topics which may come up this year include adding a Central Region and switching to reunions every other year rather than annual events. WE are actually that mysterious group known as “THEY” who always get the blame (or credit, but to a lesser extent) so our organization is only as good as we make it. My personal thoughts are that if nation-wide reunions are to be held every other year, that doesn’t prevent smaller, informal “regional” reunions on the off years - those are of course, decisions to be made on a local level. Back to the CGIA Web Page - MANY SINCERE THANKS to our Webmaster, Ken Brandal - his massive effort to put up a very informative and functional web page is much appreciated. He did an outstanding job much to the benefit of the organization. BZ Ken! On a separate note - the following is an idea I recently sent to my Washington based Senators and Representatives from Maine. It speaks to the frauds being committed by crooks that while claiming to be helping veterans, are actually using a large percentage of donations to line their own pockets. If you want, feel free to pass the same information onto your representatives. We owe it to our newest generation of fighting men and women who have sacrificed so much for our freedoms. “I am aware that the Congress is looking into the misuse of charity status by organizations claiming to help our veterans when in fact they are misusing that status to the detriment of the vets and the American taxpayers. Let me suggest a fix to put these cheats out of business: Step One: Charities claiming to help vets should have to CLEARLY post their overhead rates and show the percent of each dollar donated that goes to the vets versus the costs of running the charities (many use most of the monies collected to pay themselves). Step Two: Change the tax code to allow only the deduction/credit for that portion of the donation that actually goes to the charitable cause - not that percent that goes to overhead. This should (a) eventually put the scam artists out of business or make them change their ways (b) actually increase the amount of taxes due to the US Treasury but NOT (c) decrease the amount of donations to worthwhile, well run charities, as well intended people making donations will not mind only getting 95 Cents deduction on their $1 donation.” If you have any questions or comments about the newsletter, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me via any means available. Thanks for listening.
