The Theory of Plate Tectonics

From Continental Drift to the Theory of Plate Tectonics Checklist
Use this checklist and suggested order for your project to help you make sure that you have all the
necessary pieces and parts. Simply check each line once your project has the information. Don’t
stop until this entire sheet has a checkmark!
Helpful Hints:
 Be sure to EXPLAIN what each piece actually means. For example, for
a piece of evidence for continental drift, do not just put that a piece of
evidence was a puzzle-like fit of the continents. You need to explain
which continents fit together like a puzzle and how this helped to
explain continental drift.
 Plagiarism will NOT be tolerated, fix and turn back in or start over
 It doesn't matter what your grade is, if you want to fix your project by
adding what I tell you is missing, you can and then turn it back in
 Do not just Copy and Paste, at least cite your sources
 YOU MUST KEEP AND TURN BACK IN THE
ORIGINAL RUBRIC WITH YOUR CORRECTED
PROJECT
1. Continental Drift
__________________ What is it?
__________________ Alfred Wegener and his contribution (what did he say about
continental drift?)
__________________ Pangaea/evidence for Pangaea
 Puzzle-like fit of continents
 Fossil distribution/evidence
 Glacial marks to show climate change

2. Sea Floor Spreading
__________________ What is it?
__________________ Harry Hess and his contribution (what did he say about sea-floor
spreading?)
__________________ Evidence for sea-floor spreading and subduction
 Magnetic Strips on rocks/pole reversals
 Drilling samples
 Molten material
3. The Theory of Plate Tectonics
__________________ The theory of plate tectonics
Also include: Convergent, divergent, and transform boundaries
__________________ J. Tuzo Wilson and his contribution (what did he say about plate
tectonics?)
__________________ Explain how geologists started at continental drift and ended
up at the theory of plate tectonics
 How did they build up to what we accept today as the
theory of plate tectonics?
 How does everything we learned so far play a role? (Hint:
continental drift, then sea-floor spreading, and finally the
theory of plate tectonics
