Big Idea/Topic Reading: Literature Standard CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.6.9 Compare and contrast texts in different forms or genres (e.g., stories and poems; historical novels and fantasy stories) in terms of their approaches to similar themes and topics. What does the standard mean for student learning? Students will need to look at a variety of texts on different topics and compare/contrast how they approach these themes. Students can even compare fiction and informational text, as well as other forms of media. The real idea is for students to analyze how each author relates the same message through different avenues, as well as exploring author backgrounds, in order to form conclusions. Students can do so using various graphic organizers (Venn diagram). This will also be a great place to naturally integrate a thematic unit/cross curricular texts.
