The earth spins like a giant top. At the same time it is moving around the sun. This spinning or rotation gives us night and day. It takes 24 hours, or one whole day, for the earth to rotate once. The part of the earth facing the sun is lit and this is called day. The other side of the earth is getting no light and is in darkness. This is called night. As the earth spins, each side gets day and night, so when it is day in New Zealand, it is night on the other side of the world. During the daylight, we cannot usually see the moon or stars because the sunlight is too bright. In the morning the sun rises in the east and moves overhead until in the evening it sets in the west. Because our earth is tilted as it spins, the length of the daylight hours changes during the year. In summer days are long, but in winter days are short.
