DOCTOR'S DAY RECOGNITION AND CELEBRATION 2015
March 30 is National Doctors' Day. First observed in 1933 as a local celebration in Barrow County,
Georgia. Doctor's Day was recognized nationally in 1990 when President George Bush signed a
resolution designating March 30 as National Doctor's Day. March 30 commemorates the date on
which ether was used for the first time as an anesthetic for surgery that was performed by
Crawford W. Long, MD, in 1842 – making surgery a much less painful experience for patients and
surgeons. The red carnation is commonly used as the symbolic flower for National Doctors
Day.

SJRMC NEWS
Mishawaka – COO – Chris Karam
Chris stated the ER went live with the Fast Track on March 1st and the process went well.
Mishawaka - CNO Report – Ken Hall
Ken stated the hospital is formalizing the process for an Early Mobility program to help
patients get out of bed and walking.
Ken announced the hospital is initiating an Accountable Care Unit with 16 beds on the 6th
floor for the Hospitalist service in March. One Hospitalist will be on each wing. ACUs feature
unit-based teams, nurse and physician management partners and a team-oriented, patientcentered rounding model that creates a culture of excellence. The success of this use will
include improved quality of care and length of stay.
Mishawaka & Plymouth - CMO Report - Stephen Anderson, MD
Dr. Anderson presented an informational power point presentation on Critical Lab Values &
Glucometers. More information will be presented regarding the use of IStat for ICU patients.
Conversations and processes have taken place for call schedule changes to be entered into
MDsyncnet in the evenings and weekends by the Emergency Department as back up when the
Medical Staff Offices are closed. Detailed information will be distributed on how to submit
call schedule changes once this new process is implemented.
Dr. Anderson stated Dr. Arthur Schroeder is the new Hospitalist Service director. Dr.
Schroeder began at SJRMC this month.
The new Emergency Department Chair is Byars Wells, MD and Vice Chair is Jeffrey Show, MD.
NEW - SJRMC Medical Record Completion Policy – You can find this policy attached and at
www.sjrmcmedstaff.com.
In an effort to thoroughly communicate this new policy, we are including this information in
this month's newsletter again.
Mishawaka and Plymouth recently modified policies for Medical Record Completion, which
includes new time frames for completion. One thing to note is the inclusion of coding and
documentation queries as items that require completion (usually a "no change" or a brief
record update is all that is required.) The change in time frames will be implemented now,
but the enforcement of time frames will not transition until June 1 in order to give clinicians
time to adjust to the changes. (Suspension time frames under the previous policies will
continue to exist and be acted on.) Suspension for incomplete records remains a rare
occurrence at the Mishawaka and Plymouth facilities and something that both medical staff
leadership and administration wish to avoid.
Department Chair Compensation at SJRMC Mishawaka
MEC reviewed information regarding current dues distribution and amount needed for
compensating the Department Chairs. Discussion ensued and recommended was made and
approved to begin compensating the Chairs beginning in 2016. The Medical Staff Dues will
increase to $160 for members of the medical staff and $100 for allied health to provide the
funds for this compensation. It was noted that for every MEC meeting not attended $100 will
be deducted and that if the Vice -chair attends he/she will be compensated $100 for that
amount for that meeting.
