FACULTY OF KINESIOLOGY Monika Del Rizzo, Practicum Coordinator 2500 University Drive NW Calgary, AB, Canada T2N 1N4 mdelrizz@ucalgary.ca KNES 441/443/445 – PRACTICUM COURSE Practicum Position: Health Promotion - Liver Health Educator Number of Positions Available: Two per semester Industry/Company Description The Canadian Liver Foundation was founded in 1969 by a group of doctors and business leaders concerned about the increasing incidence of liver disease. Our mandate is to promote liver health and reduce the incidence and impact of liver disease by supporting research and education into causes, diagnoses, prevention and treatment of all forms of liver disease. The Liver Health Education - School Program addresses fatty liver disease and hepatitis. The main priority of this program is to involve university students to promote liver health and disease prevention through healthy lifestyle choices to elementary, junior high and high school students. The first part of the project will work with elementary students to teach them about healthy eating choices and active living to prevent Fatty Liver Disease. The second part of the project will encourage junior high and high school students to make informed decisions to prevent Fatty Liver Disease and prevent becoming infected with hepatitis A, B and C through healthy lifestyle choices. Location: Canadian Liver Foundation, Suite 309, 1010 – 1 Avenue NE, Calgary Required Hours: 60-72 hours within the term; 5-6 hours/week during fall and winter; 10-12 hours/week during spring. Academic Session: fall, winter and spring Project Duties/Responsibilities: The practicum student will work with the Regional Coordinator on the following tasks: Kool Kids - facilitate presentations to grade 5 students to teach them about healthy eating choices and active living to promote liver health and prevent Fatty Liver Disease. (Presentations on hepatitis when the students get their Hep B shots in grade 5.) Students will have quizzes on reading labels, liver health, word searches and a fitness component. Create and deliver the program evaluation for Kool Kids (parent and student evaluation forms) Organize and facilitate school presentations about healthy lifestyle choices (tattoos and piercing) throughout the term to junior high and high school students (grade 8 presentation on liver health and grade 11 presentation on risks of drugs and alcohol, tattoos and piercings). Approximately four presentations a term. Please Note: A criminal record check is required but all costs will be incurred by the Canadian Liver Foundation.
