Introduction:
Two gravity surveys were set up in east Sparks and east Reno. Approximately 17
measurements were taken in east Sparks along Prater Way and approximately 38 measurements
were taken in east Reno through the Hidden Valley suburb. Currently only the gravity survey
data along Prater Way has been processed. However, there is missing elevation data for Hidden
Valley that will soon be collected and processed.
Methods:
Measurements were taken with a LaCoste and Romberg gravity meter. At the beginning
and end of each day, gravity measurements were taken at the base station at the University of
Nevada, Reno to calculate for drift throughout the day. The known absolute gravity for the
University of Nevada, Reno base station is 979.6746 gals. A field base station was also set up to
correct for drift. The field base station was re-measured every 2-3 hours. The gravity
measurements were not measured at regular distance intervals due to time constraints. In the
basin the intervals were 300-400 m long and as the interface between the basin and bedrock was
approached the intervals were shorten to 100-200 m. Two gravity measurements were taken at
each station to ensure accuracy. Terrain corrections were made at each gravity station. The
corrections were made for the Hammer B (6.56’-54.6’) and C (54.6’-175’) rings at each station
using estimated eye height elevation. Each gravity station was surveyed in by the survey team to

obtain accurate vertical and horizontal positions. To make the free-air correction the elevation of
each gravity station must be known to within 30 cm for an accuracy of 0.01 mGal.
The survey data was reduced to the complete Bouguer anomaly (CBA). First the data was
reduced to the simple Bouguer anomaly (SBA). The SBA was calculated by first correcting for
drift of the gravity meter against the field base stations. The field corrected data was then
corrected for drift against the University of Nevada, Reno base station. The free-air and Bouguer
slab elevation was calculated using the equation:
dg= h (0.3083 – 0.04192 rho)
Where dg is the SBA in mGal, h is the elevation in meters, and rho is the density as 2.6 g/cc. The
density was obtained from analysis of rock samples taken from the bedrock. The CBA was then
determined by adding the elevation and terrain correction to the SBA value.
Using Java Grav2D, the calculated gravity data was inverted and after the 11th iteration
the inversion was completed. From the 11th iteration the Bouguer slab was plotted against the
distance of the gravity line giving an initial basin profile. More detailed information of the basin
profile will be understood once further processing using GYM-SYS is completed.
Results:
The basin profile obtained from the Relative SBA confirmed the initial hypothesis that
the basin is deeper to the west and shallower to the east. The deepest part of the basin is
approximately 500m as seen in the plot of the SBA plotted against the distance from the origin.
There is an anomaly in the plot that occurs at a depth of 400 m and at a distance of 1700 m. With
further processing this anomaly should be resolved. The data tables and map localities of both
surveys have been attached.
