Sustainability project As part of our commitment to the community we are working among. We RCC decided to help the Nigerian kids to develop environmental awareness. At first we selected a companion organization to help us built an environmental education program. The organization called “family car” and together we conclude our mission and values. We found a school in gwagalada village – “eddo vision primary school” We selected a team of eleven 6 graders and we named our project: “the green ambassadors” we assembled all crew members and explain them about the project. We soon realize that our project will be to educate the school children and their parents about the damage of soil and water pollution and what can we do to reduce the amount of garbage in the village. Our values: To understand what is earth and water pollution To readuse the amount of plastic in the garbage To use the organic garbage To educate the children of the school and the whole community To ensure that the people of the village will have a place to throw the plastic To learn theoretically and practically what can we do with garbage As we began we met with the “green ambassadors” and thought them the different garbage streams. We decided that it’s won’t be complete until we will use the organic garbage so we opened a small garden and started to make fertilizer. In order to make fertilizer you need to separate between the different garbage streams so after one week of observation we located three different containers in the school: 1. Plastic 2. Paper 3. Organic We announced to all the kids that as from that day they must separate garbage and they can’t throw it on the floor. Of course we explain the meaning of soil and water pollution. At first we bumped into some difficulties, it’s hard to change life habit and the re-education can take time. As we continued we discovered that most of the kids understood that throwing garbage can affect the soil and water quality but they didn’t quit understand what the problem with that. So we started to explain about different health problems that connected to soil and water pollution. We began to see fruits to our efforts and the school was clean and our organic garden was blossoming. We than continued to the second phase: to clean the village. We assembled all the parents of 4-5 grades and explain them about our project. We showed them the different garbage container and showed them our garden. Later that day we cleaned the village and open a pit for nonorganic garbage. We manage to bring up to 150 parents to clean the village and to teach them our values.
