Success Criteria

Show children a map of the world, show them key countries and point out the UK. Move to map of the
UK, discuss the countries England/Ireland/ Scotland/ Wales. Then show on map where Blackburn is in
the UK. Show Manchester and look at proximity.
Then using Google maps zoom in to look at Shadsworth. Can children locate their own home?
Children understand where

Talk to the children about the link to Scotland. Look at the names of the streets and locate them on
google maps in Scotland. Explain that the community was built to accommodate workers from Scotland
who moved for industry.
Using a map go for a walk around Shadworth, locating streets on the map. Look at local businesses, what
jobs do people have in the local community?

Ask the children to think about what Shadsworth and Blackburn will have looked like 100 years ago.
Take note for display. Show children old maps of their location . What is different?
Is the school there?
Fill in table – Shadsworth 100 years ago/ Shadworth today.

What might life have been like for a child 100 years ago? Explain this to the children and show a picture
of child working in a mill. Then hotseat a child from 100 years ago. Cross curricular writing- Diary entry
for a child 100 years ago…The Day in the Life of…

Explain to the children that often the cloth was weaved to make cloth.
Model how to weave paper. Children to create their own weaving. Stick each child’s weaving together to
make a weaved paper class blanket.

Show children the work of LS Lowry, look at background information and that he was from Salford.
Look at his subjects and style.
Ask them to draw and create their own picture…look at different pencil types.

Children to continue with Lowry pictures. Model how to add charcoal to create more depth and
different light and dark tones. Could children use rubbing as a way of creating texture on the walls?

Explain to the children that they will be making a model of a building in Blackburn- eg Cathedral/
houses/ BRFC etc. Ask them to think about how they could create a frame for their 3d model. Eg card/
wood. Teacher to show the children a model design plan to the children detailing how they will make it.
Children to draw in DT books a design for their building using words/ pictures/ diagrams. What will the
use to cover their frame? Paper/sugar paper/ thin wood? How will they create texture? (Rubbings/
charcoal/ pastels?)
Children to look at designs and make their model. How will they make their joins? And strengthen them?
(triangle corners) Can they measure the sides accurately?
