GRANT MEDICAL CENTER TRAUMA PROGRAM Summer Research Intensive for First-Year Medical Students The goal of the Trauma Program’s Summer Research Intensive is to encourage first-year medical students to choose careers in clinical and translational research aimed at improving care for trauma patients. First-year medical students will have the opportunity to: Identify clinical research, or translational research problems; Develop a research hypothesis or question; Learn observational and experimental methods and designs used to solve research problems; Implement the research protocol; Interpret results of a research study and determine the significance to clinical practice; Prepare and present a written or oral scientific report; Participate in rounds and other clinical activities as an observational experience. PROGRAM BENEFITS This opportunity pairs first-year medical students with some of the nation’s top trauma surgeons. Some of our program’s previous students presented at national peerreviewed conferences and their work is published in top medical and surgical journals. Students will network with medical staff and residents at OhioHealth. The students will engage as a full team member in the Trauma Program throughout the summer rotation. Students have opportunity to join morning multidisciplinary rounds, observe in surgery and the trauma bay, and experience one-on-one mentorship from our lead trauma surgeons and clinical staff. The program will help you expand your current research knowledge and give you the tools to learn how to translate these skills to the practice environment. Students will become acclimated to the expectations and culture of the professional medical community. These skills are essential for your personal success as a physician. Students have the possibility of presenting research in a national forum. PROGRAM SPECIFICS When: The program will take place from June to August of each year, with exact start and end dates remaining flexible. Page 1 of 2 Program Synopsis 12/1/2015 COMMON QUESTIONS 1. Is there a cost for the program? There is no tuition for participating in this educational program. 2. Does OhioHealth provide housing? There is no housing provided by OhioHealth. Students are responsible for arranging their own housing. 3. Will I get paid for my work while in the program? Students will receive a stipend for participation. 4. Do I need a computer to participate? No, OhioHealth will provide computer access and software needed to complete your research work. 5. Do I have to pay for parking? No, OhioHealth will provide for parking while you are a student here. 6. What will my schedule look like? The schedule for students is highly flexible. Students are responsible for making their own schedule in collaboration with their Research Coordinator and Principal Investigator. There will be didactics and other more formal educational experiences that you will be scheduled for at the beginning of the program. 7. Will I be able to work a paid job somewhere else while I participate in the research program? Students typically find they do not have time for outside work. It’s a busy place and a high level of student engagement is necessary for you to get the best benefit for your time. 8. What do previous students in the program have to say about their experience? Previous students recommend the program highly. In fact, we have maintained 100% retention in the program. Previous students have shown interest in completing residencies with the Trauma Program. 9. What do the surgeons say about the program? Our surgeons and OhioHealth are 100% supportive of this program. The surgeons enjoy working with and teaching our students.
