Introduction to Algebra II: SCIENTIFIC NOTATION PROJECT *Due Date:____________________ *Students will be marked down 15% each day it is turned in late. 1) Do some research and find some interesting data: Choose 5 facts that interest you. Three facts must have a number of 1,000 or greater associated with them. Two facts must have a number less than 1 associated with it. For example: The human body contains 70,000 miles of blood vessels. 2) Use both standard form and scientific notation: Convert the number from your fact into scientific notation. For example: The human body contains 7.0 x 104 miles of blood vessels. 3) Apply your numbers in scientific notation: Use one of your large numbers and one of your small numbers to create a word problem where you either need to multiply of divide your numbers in scientific notation. For example: How many feet of blood vessels does a human body contain? (5280 feet = 1 mile) Solution: (5.28 × 103 )(7.0 × 104 ) = 36.96 × 107 = 3.696 × 108 feet 4) Synthesize and communicate your data: a) Write each fact with the number in standard form. b) Write each fact with the number in scientific notation. c) Write your word problems with solutions. d) Make it fun to look at; add some original drawing or anecdote or some fun thing to entertain your audience. e) Include all your sources of your info. For example, state the URL of any webpage you used or the name of any book you referenced. f) This can be done on paper, poster board or as a power point.
