Stayton Friends of the Library Sept. 21, 2015 MEETING President Pam Pugsley called the meeting to order. Also present were Rita Owen, Gaile Veren, Carol Tabor, Vi Cotter, Carol Zolkoske, Lois Skiles, Casle Portner, Stephanie Rubel and Katinka Bryk. Introductions: new members Mary Schacher, Jolene Crowther and Sara Trott. Casle introduced Miss Ellie, from Mill City, who is in a new position as Library Aide in the Children’s Department. Shane read the minutes of the May meeting and they were approved as read. Darlene was not present to give the Treasurer’s Reports for May, June, July and August. Copies were handed out (see attached). Pam presented the August report. Membership Report Darlene was not present to give report. Shane said she signed up 3 new members last May during the Bookstore Bash. Bookstore Report Carol reported that August only took in $800, the lowest in a long time. Member Appreciation Days were well attended. Librarian’s Report Katinka reported that there is a visual display based on the book All the Light We Cannot See. On October 8th at 7 p.m. there will be an Oregon Humanities Conversation Project “Talking About Dying” based on the book Being Mortal. Katinka said that now patrons may sign up for a library card online; this is an advantage because it connects to electronic databases and would save librarian time. She also reported on a system that uses an RFID strip on every book’s spine, which has advantages as far as taking inventory. The Salem Library has it. It would take a lot of time to get all the books coded with the strips. An alarm would sound if a patron attempts to walk out with a book that hasn’t been checked out. She attended a presentation on the system and how it works. The Electronic Reader Board fundraising has begun. Katinka asked us to make a contribution. Shane moved to give $2000 to the reader board fund. Stephanie seconded the motion. The city pool and library children’s program would love it. Lots of nonprofit groups and activities can be promoted. The motion carried. (See attached report on library activities.) Teen/Tween Programming Mariah is working on Maker Space. Children’s Programming Summer Reading Program went well. There were less signups than usual, but a greater percentage of finishers. An Art Club has been 1 started to provide an activity for middle ages: the tweens, but includes down through age 5. In November there will be a stuffed animal sleepover again. There will be a Goosebumps party for this age group as well. Adult Programming Stephanie reported on the adult book club. There are book kits of 6 books each that can be loaned out to various book clubs. Crazy Eight authors event will feature talks by Oregon authors, whose books will be for sale. FOL will make some profit. Do we want to sign up for the portable ability to swipe credit cards for book sales? It can send electronic receipts to customers. The money would go into the FOL account. Casle moved that we sign up for this device and program. The motion was seconded and it carried. Table toppers have been distributed around town to promote Brews, Bites & Books (a Foundation event) on October 9th, and the Used Book Sale on Oct. 8-10. OLD BUSINESS Growing the membership of FOL Hurray for and welcome to the new members! Updating the scrapbooks of FOL Stephanie did not have time over the summer to work on them, but they are available to look at, stored in a cupboard. NEW BUSINESS Used Book Sale October 8-10 Carol Tabor circulated a sign up list for sorting on Wednesday and working shifts Thursday thru Saturday. FOL credit card Pam asked if we want to get a credit card for FOL use. It was recommended that we get a debit card instead, which doesn’t require monthly payments and tracking. After we get more details from the bank we will decide. Carol Z. moved that we participate in the 43rd annual Christmas and Craft Bazaar. Casle seconded and motion carried. We’re out of book bags. Casle will take care of ordering them. Next FOL meeting: October 19th at 11 a.m. Respectfully submitted, Shane Fritz, Secretary 2
