TREK-Tech: A Walking Tour of Santa Monica using GPS
Tuesday, May 17 - 2:00 to 5:15 p.m.
Discover some of Santa Monica’s historic landmarks on this fun but informative, semi-self-guided GPS
walking tour. Following an introduction to GPS technology, participants will be divided into small teams
that will use consumer grade GPS units or their smartphones (iPhone, Blackberries) to find the tour
sites based solely upon longitude and latitude and clues. When participants arrive at these locations
they’ll learn about the history and significance of the place through a short lecture or handout. Minilectures will cover various types of GPS equipment and software, accuracy, and terminology.
Participants will enjoy a walk through historic Santa Monica while improving their understanding of
GPS technology and its heritage applications.
