2012 Highlights----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------February 28, 2011 marked the sale of Alasa Farms to Cracker Box Palace partnering with Genesee Land Trust.
Cracker Box Palace provided shelter for 182 animals in 2011. 22 new animals came to Cracker Box this year. 13
animals found new loving homes through adoptions and foster care opportunities. Sadly, 11 of our animal residents
passed away in 2011. With the recent purchase of the farm, the budget was tight and CBP had to refuse or refer animals
to other resources this year. Our stalls and pens were full. We continued to operate the feed bank to help animal
owners until suitable homes could be found for their animals.
Grants - Intervet in cooperation with Ledgewood Equine Clinic provided horse vaccines for 10 of our equine residents.
We received $4800 for the new Large Animal Emergency Response Trailer from ASPCA. Three new septic systems and
a leach bed were installed on the farm to ensure the quality of the surrounding creeks and bay as a result of the combined
efforts of grants from The Stuart Foundation, Save Our Sodus and Wayne County Soil and Water. Xerox Corporation
awarded the shelter a grant to build a new rabbit run off the Ice House at the Cow Barn for our expanding Bunny
Department. Many foundations and supporters contributed to the Capital Campaign making it possible for Cracker Box
Palace to achieve its goal to purchase Alasa Farms. Our sincerest appreciation to all that helped us reach our goal.
Large Animal Response Team (LART) continues training exercises to remain in top form for animal emergency
responses. The LART was called five times in 2011 by veterinary clinics, a municipality, 911, private individuals with
animal emergencies, and to assist Wayne County Animal Cruelty Investigators, law enforcement personnel, and the
Wayne County District Attorney in two abuse/neglect calls.

County Emergency Management, Petfinder.com. We also are now on the lists of American Horse Protection Association
and The Equus Foundation. The farm’s historic value resulted in a listing on the National Register of Historic Places in
December of 2009. An application to the Preservation League of New York was also submitted for designation as one of
their “Seven to Save” properties in New York State.
Alasa Farms Preservation Project
In February of 2009 a fire severely damaged the historic Shaker Main House. Local volunteer firefighters fought the blaze
and saved the structure. Shortly thereafter the Mangan Family, owners of Alasa Farms, made the difficult decision to sell
the entire Alasa Farms property. The Cracker Box Palace Board of Directors voted to execute a contract with the
Mangan Family for the purchase of this magnificent property for a discounted price of $1.5 million. The safety and welfare
of the animals served as the driving force behind this decision. The Mangan Family has established a deadline of
November 30, 2010 for the completion of the sale.
In September of 2009, Cracker Box Palace received notice that a $500,000 grant through NYS Office of Parks,
Recreation and Historic Preservation to subsidize the purchase of Alasa Farms was reserved to be awarded. Those
funds will be applied toward the purchase of Alasa Farms once they are received. Additionally, the Genesee Land Trust
Board of Directors joined in the effort to save the farm, applying for federal funding to subsidize the purchase.
On February 28, 2011 the purchase of Alasa Farms by Cracker Box Palace with our new partners, Genesee Land Trust,
was completed thanks to the Mangan family holding the mortgage for us while we wait for the funds from NYS to become
available.
Work Projects Started in 2011:
 The Board of Directors continues to devise plans to restore the historic farmstead.
 Agricultural programs to allow the farm to provide a sustainable income for the shelter and farm. Using some of
the row crop land to produce 11,000 bales of hay on the farm is a top priority.
 CBP team members and Genesee Land Trust are working with DEC to start to repair the 300 acres of forests and
start a trail system for hiking and horseback riding.
 We will also be developing a Sugar Bush on the farm for maple syrup production.
 CBP has cleaned out, repaired and remodeled the Bunk House with eight bedrooms, complete with bunks, large
dining room/meeting room with kitchen and baths. Work still has to be done to complete this project including
adding handicapped accessible bathrooms and ramp. The Bunk House will be a multi-purpose building on the
farm to meet, rest from work, gather for meals and allow visitors, kids and guests to stay while they work at the
farm.
 The addition of a paid staff to handle all aspects of the farm and farmstead is underway.
Thank you to all of CBP’s supporters, our friends old and new. For more information about Cracker Box Palace, details
